Happy Hour: Counting Some Heads
- A big shout-out to the 69% of Tennesseeans who have turned in their US Census forms! So far, we’ve matched the rate at which we turned them in back in the 2000 Census. The core counties, however, still have a long way to go. [Tennessean]
- Lots of flights have been disrupted by that whole volcanic cloud mess over in the UK, but so far no flights in or out of BNA have been disrupted. [Tennessean]
- A Juvenile Court judge who was displaying a political sign in her yard for today’s special election is blaming the sign on her husband, since she’s not endorsing any candidate. [City Paper]
- LenDale White has decided to stay for a little while. [Tennessean]
- The Associated Press estimates that 200 folks participated in the Tea Party march to the Capitol today, which is a statistic with which we feel sure someone will argue. [WZTV]
- Mayor Dean plans to unveil a new website, Connecting New Nashvillians (not live yet), which will be a tool to connect Nashville’s immigrant community to the goods and services they need. [Tennessean]
- Tennessee’s unemployment rate went from 10.7% to 10.6% during the month of March, and hey, it’s progress! [Tennessean]

Celebrate Independent Record Stores At Record Store Day This Saturday

It’s that weekend in April when everything happens at the same time (at least Rites of Spring held off until next weekend this year, right?). Record Store Day is this Saturday, and things are probably going to get a little wild at the indie record store of your choosing. Exclusive releases, live music, lots of beer, food and discount music are the typical highlights of the day, and this year is no different. Though it seems that Grimey’s learned from last year’s Avett-Brothers-and-Mute-Math-induced-pandemonium and booked some lower-key entertainment this year, the live music lineups across the board are solid… and free.
The Groove:

6:30 – DJ SRC (guest DJ)
Third Man Records
12-2: Shop is open to buy your copper colored BBS record and any other sweet vinyl and novelties…
2:15 – 2:45: Raffle and Auction
3:00: Racontwoers (two members of the Raconteurs reunite) perform live in the Third Man venue, get your Black and Blue ticket after the show in the shop!
The Groove is also giving away a guitar autographed by Emmylou Harris, among other things, and offering 15% off all new items and 25% off all used items during the day. Grimey’s will play host to the Yazoo truck and screen films in The Basement all day, and you never know what fun goodies you might pick up in the back lot. Third Man Records is raffling off Raconteurs go-karts for charity, peddling Las Paletas and promising DJs and lots of fun. And don’t forget to swing by The Great Escape to check out their Record Store Day sale, with vinyl 20% off, selected EPs for $0.50 and other bargain treats throughout the day.

Happy Hour: Get Movin’
- The new MTA mobile app is out and ready for download! RouteShout is available for iPhone, on mobile web and in the Google Android Marketplace. [WSMV]
- Happy birthday, Loretta Lynn! [Tennessean]
- No, Albert “Speedy” Haynesworth is not coming back to the Titans, says Coach Fisher. We probably couldn’t pay him enough anyway. [Tennessean]
- Everyone rejoice, for the almighty TDOT hath finished a construction project early. However it does not begin with “4,” nor does it end with a “40.” [City Paper]
- Our fellow Tennesseans in Tracy City (near the ‘Noog) elected a dead man as mayor, seemingly by accident. [WSMV]
- The Preds embark on their playoff adventure on Friday against Chicago, and the City Paper feels that it’s appropriate to point out that they have never actually won a playoff game outside of the Nashville Sommet Bridgestone Center Arena. Good luck, boys! [City Paper]
- Just when we thought the Shelbyville Russian adoption story couldn’t get any weirder, someone threw in a neighbor feud involving a neon-painted trailer with cameras and motion sensor lighting. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Much Ado Edition
Good morning, Nashville. The Tennessee House and Senate both passed resolutions yesterday opposing the new federal health care program. The House version, sponsored by Rep. Susan Lynn and debated for two full hours, asked Congress not to pass the overhaul which actually passed several weeks ago. Rep. John DeBerry bowed out of the vote, choosing instead to hang out at his desk because he felt that debating something that already passed for two hours was “the very reason that folks think we’re out of our minds in this House.” The Senate resolution asked the State Attorney General to sue the feds over the program on the grounds that it’s unconstitutional.
- Abortion ban passes House. The Tennessee House also passed a ban on any abortion coverage that becomes available under the new federal health care program.
- Dirty dirty Sanchez. Moving onto More Important Matters, however, the Metro Council is now considering doling out a beer license to Taco Mamacita who can’t even serve up a proper Dirty Sanchez without swapping out the PBR for high-octane beer. Taco Mamacita has been unable to get their beer license because they’re situated within 100 feet of a residential area. The rule does not apply to liquor licenses.
- Custodians fight back. Some Nashville clergy and custodians who would be affected by Metro Schools’ layoffs will be holding a vigil outside of Mayor Dean’s meeting tonight to discuss budget cuts.
- Bits & pieces. North Nashville really wants a piece of the new Sounds stadium … Gibson Guitars seems to be having some trouble with the IRS … There is a water and sewage rate increase in store for Nashville … Also, the TVA will be hiking our bills again … A Murfreesboro woman found $2,000 dollars and gave it back.

Bright & (Not So) Early: Reeling Them In
Good morning, Nashville. We’re running behind, so you know the drill:
- The Nashville Film Festival will have a few new faces this year with all the industry executives who are in town for the city’s first FilmCom- an industry event that hopes to raise the profile of Nashville in the film. With the help of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau, executives from 10 major film distribution companies will be flown in for the festival. [WPLN]
- For some reason, Nashville WX is posting snow pictures in April. But these are actually pretty cool. [Nashville WX]
- The city may soon start imposing a monthly fee for folks who use more than two of the 96-gallon trash bins, which they hope will encourage more recycling in addition to providing some more revenue. [WTVF]
- The Preds finished out the season with an overtime win against the Blues, and now they’re headed to the playoffs. [City Paper]
- Tennessean actress Dixie Carter passed away from cancer over the weekend. She was 70. [Tennessean]
