Naked Without Us: Fashion & Music Festival [Guest Posts]
Editor’s note: Guest poster Alyson Woods is a fashion blogger, internet geek and all around awesome person. She has committed to not shopping for new clothing for a year, and is blogging her journey over at Alyson Is Neat. You can stalk her on Twitter, or just read her fabulous blog.
No, you are not seeing things. There may be a few more ridiculously tall women traipsing about this week, looking fashionable, in Nashville all for a week long festival called Naked Without Us. Combining two of Nashville’s most beloved creative outlets; music and fashion, Naked Without Us is hosting events all over the city this week donating proceeds to the Rob Bironas Fund. This festival is only in Nashville and made up of an uber-creative team working insanely hard to celebrate Nashville’s independent aesthetic that merges music and fashion. With a combination of fashion/rock shows, speaking panels, boutique crawls and plenty of industry mixers, already Naked Without Us 2010 has kicked off to a great start!
You definitely do not want to miss out on the FOUR fashion/rock shows that kick off Wednesday night and continue every night until Saturday:
Street Tees Fashion Show, Wednesday April 21, at Exit/In, $5 cover
Boutique Showcase Fashion Show, Thursday April 22, Mercy Lounge, $5 cover
Emerging Designers Fashion Show, Friday April 23rd, Mercy Lounge, $10 cover
The Originals Fashion Show, Saturday April 24th, Mercy Lounge, $10 cover
Also, if you are not one for running a half or full marathon on Saturday, head down to the Naked Without Us Marketplace hosted in the Gulch next to Urban Outfitters at 1pm where you will be able to meet, mingle, and even purchase from some of the designers and people involved in the event.
All Access passes that allow you into industry mixers and panels are available for $30 at Grimey’s. At each of these events be on the lookout for silent auctions featuring pieces from the designers, free drinks (and Yazoo drink specials), giveaways, and lots of promotions going on during the boutique crawl. Check out the Naked Without Us events page for all the details of events, promotions, musicians and designers.

Bright & Early: Working Hard For The Money Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Yesterday we took a look at lawsuits that are draining Metro Schools’ budget. Today we learn that the city has doled out over a half-million dollars in settlements over the last two months for incidents including a car accident with a MNPD officer, the infamous gold grill scandal and a wrongful arrest. Councilman Mike Craddock recognizes that city individuals or entities were to blame for each of the incidents, but he doesn’t feel that suing Metro is the answer.
- Future of sex ed. Metro Schools officials and some of the folks from Nashville CARES will meet today to decide how to handle the continuation of sex ed training at Hillshoro High School after the controversy earlier this month that made national news.
- Preds win Game 3. The Preds plowed past the Blackhawks 4-1 last night in Game 3 of the playoffs. Game 4 will happen tomorrow night at the Bridgestone Arena.
- Bits & pieces. Both Sarah and Todd Palin may end up testifying in the email-hacking case against former UT student and son of TN Rep. Mike Kernell … A big congrats to Belmont Prez Bob Fisher for being voted “Nashvillian of the Year” … The Titans schedule for 2010 is up … Taco Mamacita is now free to sell regular ol’ beer, thanks to the Metro Council.

Happy Hour: Play Us Out
- Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey totally got called out by Governor Phil this morning for giving too much attention to his campaign and not enough to his current gig at the legislature. “[W]hile the Legislature’s here,” the governor said, “I need a little more Ron Ramsey the speaker than Ron Ramsey the gubernatorial candidate.” [WTVF]
- According to first quarter statistics, Nashville’s public transit system is gaining some cred with the locals and has seen a pretty significant increase over the past few months. Don’t forget that you can download MTA’s mobile app here. [WTVF]
- The Preds will do battle at home tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks for Game 3 of the playoffs. Get yourselves down there and make some noise! [Tennessean]
- A bill that will prevent tax dollars in Tennessee from covering abortions will sent to Governor Phil for signing this week. The bill includes all abortions except for in cases of rape or incest, or when the mother’s life is at risk. [WPLN]

Serious Eats Gets Serious About Nashville Taco Trucks

Serious Eats contributor Citizen Taco has put together the most extensive list of Nashville taco trucks we’ve ever seen. In fact, if we’re going to be honest, we really had no idea that our options were this varied. There’s Mas Tacos, and there’s a whole bunch of stuff on Nolensville, but we would have never guessed that we have eight authentic taco trucks (mostly) worth talking about scattered down Gallatin Pike & Nolensville Road. Check out the guide here, and don’t be surprised if you suddenly find yourself craving tacos for lunch.

Ben & Jerry’s Brings Bonnaroo Buzz To Scoop Shops

Bonnaroo has never sounded this delicious. Bonnaroo Buzz, the newest addition to the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream lineup, is a light coffee & malt ice cream blend with whiskey caramel swirls and english toffee pieces, and dedicated to our sorta-hometown festival. Did somebody say whiskey? The ice cream won’t be available in retail stores, but you won’t have to haul all the way out to Manchester to get it – Bonnaroo Buzz will be in scoop shops soon, and yes, it will also be available at the festival. And mark your calendars, because on May 4 from 5-7pm, scoop shops nationwide will host Bonnaroo Buzz Flavor Release Parties.
As if having a really-extremely-delicious-sounding ice cream dedicated to them isn’t awesome enough, Bonnaroo will be donating their share of the ice cream proceeds to the Bonnaroo Works Fund, which means we have no reason to feel bad about a little indulgence, right?

Bright & Early: Movin’ & Shakin’ Edition
Good morning, Nashville. In a continuation of East Tennessee falling apart, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Maryville early this morning. Though no one was injured and no damages were reported, folks definitely felt it (and our favorite is the woman who assumed that her husband “had run into their house with his truck” because that was clearly the most plausible scenario.) Just yesterday, Polk County residents celebrated the re-opening of US Highway 64, which had been closed since November 10th due to a rockslide. We can’t imagine that an earthquake is going to do much to help future things like this.
- Bright ideas. Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall is busy trying to explain why in the world an alcoholic inmate who drunkenly beat up (read: nearly killed) a soldier would be sent out on work release to the nightclub Decades. The club is even located on the same block where the attack occurred.
- Equal Pay Day. A new report by the National Partnership for Women & Families says that, on average, Tennessee women are paid $9,367 less per year than Tennessee men.
- Bits & pieces. A bill that would require some DUI offenders to take breathalyzer tests in order to start their cars passed in the TN Senate yesterday … Tayst held a fundraiser yesterday to raise money to help improve access to health and nutritious foods at schools … MDHA received a chunk of new federal grant money to build more affordable housing and homeless shelters in Nashville … Nashville attorneys and producers of a History Channel documentary show about gangs are fighting over some potentially incriminating footage.

Happy Hour: Get Off Our Lawn!
- You know that it’s a slow news day when we start uncovering scandal and tragedy in the love life of one Davy Crockett. [Tennessean]
- This week’s construction traffic at BNA is supposed to be some of the the worst yet. Plan accordingly if you’re flying in or out of town this week. [WKRN]
- It’s a little early in the week to begin speculating, but we could definitely see some storms during the coming weekend. [Nashville WX]
- The State Attorney General thinks that the proposed new “Jesus is Lord” specialty license plate would be unconstitutional. [WSMV]
- Like we said, slow news day!

Happy Hour: Why Doesn’t Anyone Think Of The Polar Bears
- The most important news of the day, of course, is that some people went around town last night dressing every single friggin’ statue in all of Nashville up in Predators attire, for the playoff game. We are simply upset because no one thought of the polar bears. [Tennessean & The Zone]
- The latest reports say that the economic stimulus has created and/or salvaged 56,000 jobs in Tennessee. [Tennessean]
- In an effort to make peace with the kid whose Shelbyville adoptive mother shipped him back to Russia, US and Russian officials bought him some birthday presents. [WTVF]
- Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a DUI issued to someone on a tractor here in Tennessee. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Travel Easier Edition
Good morning, Nashville. As of April 30th, you’ll be happy to know that airlines won’t be able to leave you on the tarmac for more than three hours anymore. The folks at BNA are “planning for and making accommodations for” this new law to go into effect, and though we’re not sure which accommodations one would make for not stranding passengers on the runway for three hours, they assure us that they’re ready.
- Preds to the playoffs. The Preds head to Chicago tonight for Game 1 of the NHL playoffs and City Paper has a breakdown of the match-up. Though it looks like Chicago has a slight edge (and, well, there’s that whole thing about the Preds never winning an playoff game that wasn’t at home), we will be cheering our hearts out at the Nashvillest HQ.
- Weekend I-440 closures, again. Westbound I-440 will be closed this weekend, but only during daylight hours. We hope this means that they’re paving it finally. And you can count on some numerous unannounced almost-closures, so it’s probably best to avoid it all weekend regardless of the time of day.
- Bits & pieces. Today is the last day to mail in your census form if you haven’t done so already … Bela Fleck will be performing at the Earth Day festival on Saturday at Centennial Park … One of the white supremacist guys behind the Tennessee-grown plot to kill Obama was sentenced to 10 years in prison … Our neighbors in Memphis are looking forward to a “massive redevelopment” of Graceland.
