Blogs We Love: Alphabedible Adventures [Nashvillest Spotlight]

Nashville, blogging and food… Three things we love dearly. We also love unique projects by people who love this city as much as we do, and Brian & Tracy at Alphabedible Adventures fit the bill. They’re dining through the city of Nashville one letter at a time, and from the looks of things, having as much fun as it sounds.

Alphabedible Adventures just wrapped up their “I” visit by checking out the International Market on Belmont Blvd. They’ve got a running list of restaurants they visit on their A-Z foodie tour of Nashville, and sometimes they even let readers vote on their next destination. Each of their restaurant reviews is complete with clear photos and a solid critique of the food and atmosphere, making it one of our favorite foodie blog stops, even without the “alphabedible” twist.

Stay up to date with Alphabedible on Twitter at @alphabedible, and subscribe to their RSS feed here. We’ll see you there next week with the letter “J.”

Bright & Early: Peep Peep Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Several Metro Schools staff members made a colorful appearance at last night’s School Board meeting to let everyone know just how excited they are about their hours, jobs, and incomes being cut. Last week, the board proposed a new budget for next year that would cut 665 jobs and shave one hour off of bus drivers’ workdays. One of the workers even joked that he would need to get a second job working at the new Music City Center or the riverfront water park.

Happy Hour: And We’re Back

  • The Tennessee State Fair is being jointly taken over by Rockhouse Partners and North American Midway Entertaining. Follow @TNStateFair on Twitter to stay up to date. And also, racing is not in the picture this season. [WKRN]
  • Clarksville folks have been puzzling over the hundreds of dead birds that turned up in the area last month, concerned that there’s a contamination problem. Turns out that some dense fog is actually to blame, causing low visibility that sent the animals into trees and powerlines. [WKRN]
  • Lest you guys lose count, our state budget shortfall is now at $200 million thanks to our 21st straight month of losing revenue. [City Paper]
  • And on that note, the Senate Finance Committee passed a bill today that will amend the Tennessee Constitution to expressly ban an income tax if it makes it through the long and complicated amendment process. [WKRN]

Bright & (Not So) Early: Where There’s Smoke Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re running behind this morning, so you know the drill:

  • A fuel tanker went up in flames this morning at a Raceway gas station in Donelson. The explosion, which left the 68-year old driver severely burned, sent flames shooting 30 feet into the air according to witnesses. [WSMV]
  • The Tennessee Hospitality Association finally up and fired CEO Walt Baker for sending out that incredibly offensive email comparing our African American First Lady to a chimpanzee. This move came after the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau yanked their contract with Baker’s marketing firm. [WZTV]
  • It might’ve felt great outside this morning, but it’s supposed to be pretty soggy by this afternoon. [Nashville WX]
  • Metro’s Human Relations Commission is re-examining how to implement the new(ish) clause which added sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of things that can’t be used as a basis for  discrimination by the city. Only one such complaint has been filed so far. [Out & About]
  • The folks at Belmont are aiming high for 2015 and hoping to rebrand as “Nashville’s University” with increased diversity and enrollment numbers around 7,000. [WSMV]
  • Central Parking is scrambling to defend their alleged price-gouging since construction began on the Music City Center. And it’s about what we expected: Supply and demand. [WKRN]
  • The city is expected to make an announcement this afternoon about which company gets to run the 2010 Tennessee State Fair. [WKRN]
  • Before you get too excited, economic experts say that Nashville isn’t yet emerging from the recession. [WKRN]

Happy Hour: Just What Do You Think You’re Doing, Dave?

  • If anyone has a sweet-looking Victorian home lying around in Nashville and they don’t mind selling it, having it appear in a film, and then be bulldozed in a film, there are some folks who would like to talk to you. [WTVF]
  • And dear goodness, it was beautiful outside today. Thanks to all who mobbed Bobbie’s Dairy Dip with us for lunch! Follow us on Twitter to hear about future meet-ups (and various other sundry things). [NashvilleWX]
  • Nashville State is trying to conquer the midstate by eventually having 10 locations in the region instead of just one. [WSMV]
  • LaVergne still can’t seem to get the hang of that whole “Do Not Sell Alcohol To Minors” thing for some reason, as 1/3 of the businesses tested by police ended up selling it to underage kids even after checking IDs. [WKRN]
  • Metro wants to crack down on limos and taxis that aren’t meeting regulations. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Not Easy Being Green Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It’s no secret that Metro Schools are struggling a bit, and now they’re trying to attack the 73% graduation rate by creating a program to help incarcerated students finish their education. The “virtual high school” program will last anywhere from six weeks to a semester and will evaluate them to find out what their needs are and work with them to get what they need. The online program will also allow other students to take AP courses that may not be offered at their particular school. The total cost for the program is expected to be around $600,000.

Happy Hour: Fish In A Barrel

  • Metro announced that they’ll probably be cutting 665 jobs from the school system at the end of the year, which should go a long way in closing the $35 million budget gap. Most of the jobs being cut are maintenance and custodial positions, which we guess means that everyone will be taking out their own trash next year. [WPLN]
  • Two Coffee County teachers were fired for doing shady things related to the TCAP testing, and because of this, every kid at that particular high school will probably have to re-take their test. They are thrilled by this, clearly. [WSMV]
  • The Beer Sellar and Hooters downtown will be closing up shop starting March 20th for building repairs. People are mostly upset that they have to find somewhere else to get their chicken wing fix, and to these folks we say “good luck.” There are not enough chicken wings in this city and we will be fighting you for them, you see! [WKRN]
  • And in today’s installment of An Important Person Forwarding A Racist Email In Tennessee, we have the CEO of the Tennessee Hospitality Association, who was instrumental to the passing of the Music City Center, forwarding an email comparing Michelle Obama to a monkey. Ha, ha, isn’t that funny? Nope. [Pith In The Wind]

The Weekendist: Madness In March Edition

Your long-awaited Weekendist is back! It’s not often that we have so much happening in one weekend during the winter months, so much so that we’re dubbing this weekend “March Madness” (at least for us). Get out and enjoy the sun & mid-50′s temperatures, and take your pick from the madness.

FRIDAY

  • Ani DiFranco with Erin McKeown. 9pm, Cannery Ballroom, $38. Ani DiFranco needs no introduction from us. She’s playing tonight at the Cannery, and tickets are still available.
  • Tyler James CD release show. 8pm, 12th & Porter, $5/$10 with CD. With Peter Barbee, Keegan DeWitt and other special guests. Though Tyler James has been relentlessly playing his music for years, both around Nashville and on the road, he’s waited until now to release a debut full-length record. Whether you know Tyler’s music from Ten out of Tenn, or you’re more familiar with his solo work, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you try on It Took The Fire for size.

SATURDAY

  • PodCamp Nashville. 9am-4pm, afterparty 4-7pm, Cadillac Ranch, free. What more can we say that hasn’t already been said? What are you waiting for, get yourself down to PodCamp!
  • Wines of the World. Nashville Farmer’s Market, 4pm, $15. Spend an afternoon tasting unique wines from Australia and South Africa at the Farmer’s Market with Sommelier Christopher Stowe and Chef Donny Wilson (Jackson’s).
  • Pikes Peak Derby Dames All Stars vs. Music City All Stars. 6:30pm, Tennessee State Fairgrounds, $10 advance/$15 door. You know what this means… the roller derby girls are back for another sure-to-sell-out bout, so get your tickets in advance online or from your trusted rollergirl source.
  • First Saturday Art Crawl. 6-10pm, downtown, free. We’re absolutely thrilled that it’s ever-so-slightly warmer this week, as it makes gallery-hopping much more fun. Grab some friends and head downtown to sip wine, browse art and other handmade crafts, and spend a few hours wandering around between 4th & 5th Avenues.

SUNDAY

  • Mamma Mia! 1pm, 6:30pm, TPAC, $31-71. Catch this week’s limited run of Broadway’s Mamma Mia! on closing day. Of course, you could also go Friday (8pm) or Saturday (2pm, 8pm). Tickets range from $31-71 and are still available for all showings, but the Saturday afternoon showing is the closest to selling out. You’ve been warned.
  • Nashville Predators vs. Vancouver Canucks. 2pm, Bridgestone Arena. See our freshly-returned Olympians take on those darn Canadians yet again at Sunday’s matinee game, or just head down to admire the shiny new signs on our Bridgestone Arena. Get your tickets now, or keep your eyes peeled for those frequent day-of $10 sales.
  • Oscar Night America. 5:30pm/7pm, Belcourt Theatre, $50-$250. Dust off your finery and hit the red carpet at the Belcourt’s annual Oscar Night America fundraiser, one of just two Academy-sanctioned viewing events in the state. Tickets to the gala and live telecast are $50 for Belcourt members, $75 for non-members, but if you want to hit up the patron’s party beforehand, it’ll cost you a bit more… But we hear it’s always worth it.
  • They Might Be Giants at Exit/In. Sorry folks – Unless you already got your tickets to see They Might Be Giants perform Flood in its entirety, you’re out of luck, because this one’s sold out. We got our tickets, did you? (Hey, we can’t help but gloat every once in a while… and there’s always Craigslist.)
