Happy Hour: Stop Reading This And Go Outside Please

  • If this does not make you crave hot chicken somethin’ awful, then you are not human (or okay, maybe you’re a vegetarian. Which is cool too.) [Tennessean]
  • Metro Police say that the giant gang shoot-out on the northside in broad daylight yesterday just goes to show us that Nashville gangs have some real cajones and that is not a good thing for the rest of us. [Tennessean]
  • Mike McWherter, son of former Tennessee governor Ned McWherter, is now the lone Democratic candidate in the gubernatorial primaries. He seems to be doing just fine for himself as he donated $1 million to his own campaign only yesterday. [WTVF]
  • The Titans’ preseason schedule is up! We’re excited already. [WTVF]
  • Crime is on the rise on Tennessee’s college campuses for the first time in five years. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Climb Every Mountain Edition

Good morning, Nashville. As they begin to wrap things up, the state legislature has definitely left at least a few issues unresolved. One of those issues was a bill banning mountain top mining, which died in a subcommittee for the third straight year yesterday after they adjourned until 2011. Lots of folks in Tennessee feel very strongly about mountain top mining including Rep. Mike McDonald who declared that “Tennesseans should be outraged.” Opponents argue that destroys the landscape and hurts tourism.

Happy Hour: Fun With Words

  • This whole thing about student vaccinations (or “shots,” in the parlance of our times) has delivered some pretty giggle-inducing headlines, not the least of which is the Williamson County AM’s failure that wound up on one of our favorite internet things, Probably Bad News. And this other headline too. [WSMV]
  • Metro’s latest budget cut idea is to eliminate office phones and voicemail boxes for all Metro Council members, meaning that constituents will have to get in touch with their representatives via their home and cell phones. Now, we all know that there’s always THAT constituent in every district who calls every three days, about everything. Now imagine this person calling you on your cell phone, every day. We veto this idea on behalf of our poor Metro Council. [City Paper]
  • We wish East Tennessee would stop with the rockslides already. And we’re sure East Tennessee wishes that East Tennessee would stop with the rock slides as well. [WSMV]
  • The Tennessee Senate voted to approve an amendment that would create a constitutional ban on a state income tax. While Senate approval is vital, it still has a very very long way to go. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Jumping For Joy Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Yesterday we heard the news that Tennessee would be raking in $500 million of new stimulus money to give a much-needed boost to the state’s struggling school systems. But how much is in it for Metro? Initial estimates are $24 million, and the catch is that none of the funds can be used to cover the operating budget. Metro hopes to focus on using the funds to attract and retain good teachers in addition to beefing up math and science programs.

Happy Hour: Case Of The Mondays

  • A huge congratulations to the State of Tennessee for snagging nearly $500 million in federal grant funding to give schools a much-needed overhaul. Governor Phil announced today that our state, along with Delaware, was chosen as a recipient of the Race to the Top grant. [WKRN]
  • It wasn’t quite as exciting a day for our friends at SouthComm (Nashville Post, Nashville Scene, City Paper, etc.) who experienced a round of layoffs today that included at least one pretty high-profile employee. [Nashville Post]
  • As you might have concluded from the rate at which your internet was crawling this morning, Comcast experienced some trouble that slowed most of Nashville to a halt. [Tennessean]
  • CMApocalypse 2010 will now include a 5K. [WSMV]
  • Memphis has been named the hunger capital of the United States. [Tennessean]

Happy Hour: Tee Gee Eye Eff

  • Metro Water Services would like everyone in Antioch to please limit their water usage this weekend while they replace the water lines. So no matter how nice it is outside, no running through the sprinkler, okay? You will be hogging all the water from your neighbors which is not cool. [WSMV]
  • Today was a special day for Mayor Dean because he had to suit up in gym clothes and go play basketball with some middle schoolers. It had something to do with our city’s sky-high childhood obesity rates. [WTVF]
  • The crazy person who rammed into a guy’s car yesterday because of an Obama sticker apparently told his side of the story today, which was not much. From what we can tell, he flipped the guy the bird, rammed his car, rammed his car some more and then peeled off to Harris Teeter for some dinner which is where the police intercepted him. And oh yeah, he was drunk. [WKRN]
  • For the frequent fliers among us, BNA is making some seasonal changes to the flight schedules that may affect your travel plans. [Tennessean]
  • Why can we not get enough of Bette the Baby Goat? Seriously. Head over to The Green Wagon on Sunday at 2pm to wish her a happy one-month birthday. [Twitter]

Bright & (Not So) Early: The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We hate to do the abbreviated thing to you two days in a row, but we promise we’ll be back on top of our game on Monday. A huge thanks to all of you braved the crazy hail to come out to Twestival last night, and an especially huge thanks to our friends at Avenue 9, Bravo Gelato, FiddleCakes and Maxx Productions for making the entire event possible. Now, your abbreviated Bright & Early:

  • Pearl-Cohn High School will soon become Metro’s very first Entertainment Industry Management magnet school. So like, a training ground for Belmont University. [WSMV]
  • The sheriff’s deputy that reached into an inmate’s mouth a few weeks ago and totally ripped out his gold grill was fired. Pictures of the deputy, the inmate and the grill in question (!!!) at the source. [WKRN]
  • Some crazy person ran a guy and his 10-year old daughter off the road yesterday in a road rage incident that appeared to be incited by an Obama bumper sticker. The accident took place on Blair Blvd. near Belmont and no one was injured. [WKRN]
  • A vodka and gin distillery hopes to set up shop in Thompson’s Station after their Leiper’s Fork location fell through. [WSMV]
  • Nashville ranks seventh among cities in the US for the average money spent per household. [WKRN].
  • Nashville area businesses have noticed a spike in business since one Ms. Gwyneth Paltrow heaped so much blog praise upon our fair city, twice. [WTVF]
  • It is supposed to be nice tomorrow! [Nashville WX]

Cheekwood, The Frist Host Free Days This Weekend [Freebies]

It seems to be quite the weekend for free art in Nashville, with Cheekwood and the Frist Center both hosting free days this Saturday and Sunday. Cheekwood will be free on both Saturday (9:30am-4:30pm) and Sunday (11am-4:30pm) thanks to the generous people over at Regions Bank. It even looks like things are going to dry out on Saturday just in time to enjoy a day out in the gardens! And when the drizzles return on Sunday, head indoors at the Frist Center for Family Free Day  (1-5:30pm).

Bright & (Not So) Early: Just Another Day On The Hill Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re busy getting ourselves ready for our little Twestival shindig tonight (which we would love love love for you all to come to, by the way, and did we mention the free Yazoo stout gelato and Twitter cake?!), so here’s your abbreviated Bright & Early:

  • We’re really excited about the new free Music City Circulator buses, but apparently there’s only enough money in the budget to keep them running through July and the rest is up in the air. Moral of the story: Please use the heck out of these buses so the city decides they’re worth keeping, okay? [Tennessean]
  • Today is going to be super nasty, but then again, you probably knew that already because you have a window. [Nashville WX]
  • A little over 100 people showed up to the Tea Party protest yesterday at Legislative Plaza, but then the bill they were protesting, the Health Freedom Act, was delayed and they were Very Disappointed that they could not actually protest it. [WTVF]
  • And speaking of legislative drama, Rep. Jason Mumpower totally just announced that he’s not seeking reelection. Which is huge. Perhaps he’s still a little butt-hurt over the whole Speaker of the House coup from last year. [Post Politics]
  • A Shelbyville man was picked up for soliciting sex from a minor after he accidentally sent a sext to a police detective who then carried on the conversation as a 13-year old girl. [WSMV]

Gwyneth Paltrow Blows Our Cover (And We Kind Of Like It)

So it was really cool and awesome and fun last week when Gwyneth Paltrow used her GOOP newsletter to let everyone know how great Nashville is, right? We’re glad she enjoyed her stay here while filming the new movie Love Don’t Let Me Down with Tim McGraw, and we have to admit she has great taste.

She talks about the staples – the Ryman, Grand Ole Opry, Station Inn and The Loveless Cafe.

She ventures outside of the tourist books to enjoy some of our favorites – The Family Wash, Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack (okay, we’re a little skeptical that she actually tried this one, but whatever!), City House, Whiskey Kitchen, Margot and The Patterson House.

She drank coffee at all of our favorite spots – Ugly Mugs, Frothy Monkey, Bongo Java and Fido (even if she did weirdly refer to Fido as the restaurant inside Bongo Java).

And she even spent some time learning about our local products and the places that sell them – Olive & Sinclair Chocolate Co., Drew’s Brews and the Turnip Truck.

And then, GOOP Does Nashville Part Duex hit our inboxes this morning. This lady is hardcore! In addition to heaping glowing praises on Imogene + Willie as “one of the coolest stores I have ever been to,” Ms. Paltrow covers the other half of Broadway that she didn’t manage to fit in the first newsletter (Hatch Show Print, Gruhn Guitars), Green Hills boutiques (Two Elle, H. Audrey), everyone’s favorite independent record shop (we’ll let you take a wild guess on that one), The Carl Von Vechten Gallery at, um, “Fist University” (we had to), Nashville musicians and an exhausting list of fun places for kids. Whew.

We have to wonder though… Did Gwyneth Paltrow actually work while she was in town? We haven’t been to half of these places, and we live here! We kid, we kid. We’re especially grateful to Ms. Paltrow for giving some of Nashville’s lesser-known gems a chance to shine, and for that, we’d welcome her back any day.
