Happy Hour: We Have Another Situation (Maybe!)
- The weatherpeople are calling for another possible Ice/Snow Situation early next week, which means we have six days to come up with another good hashtag. Get to work! [Nashville WX]
- But considering that the kiddos are already out of snow days, they could be looking at Saturday school or the much-dreaded “extended school year,” which means they might be paying for all this snow well into May. [WTVF]
- We also mentioned this morning that the city is pretty low on salt from the last go-round, so they’re trying to find out how to buy some more before, um, this weekend. All in all, they estimate that the snowstorm cost us $350,000. [WKRN]
- Governor Phil is catching some heavy criticism for all the TennCare cuts that he proposed in his speech yesterday. [WPLN]
- What, seriously? Free circulator buses downtown? Count us in! [WSMV]
- A handful of bills during this legislative session are keeping the “wine in grocery stores” dream alive for us. [WSMV]

Bright & (Not So) Early: Happy Groundhog Day Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Looking out the window, we’d say that Punxsutawney Phil is probably right this time: Six more weeks of winter it is. As sometimes happens here at Nashvillest, we’re off to a late start and must give you your abbreviated Bright & Early:
- Governor Phil delivered his fairly-depressing State of the State address last night which included nearly 1,400 layoffs (but a 3% bonus for everyone who still has a job!), increased driver’s license fees, and digging into state reserves. [WKRN]
- If we get any more winter storms around here, we might be up the creek since #TheSituation2010 has put such a big dent in Nashville’s salt supply. [Tennessean]
- A study by women’s advocacy group CABLE found that there are no public companies based in Tennessee that have female CEOs. [WPLN]
- Nashville’s unemployment rate increased by 0.4% between November and December. [City Paper]
- There was a massive Twinkie heist in Kingsport on Friday night. [WZTV]

Happy Hour: Not Out Of The Woods
- Tomorrow is another snow day for the Davidson County school kids, those lucky ducks. [WSMV]
- But it isn’t without cause as the roads are still pretty treacherous in spots and the slush is expected to re-freeze tonight. [WSMV]
- Case in point: An SUV slid on the slush that’s still on the side of I-40 near the airport and crashed into a truck, killing one passenger in the SUV. The wreck shut down part of I-40 for most of the day. [WKRN]
- Until tomorrow at noon, MTA buses will be sticking to the snow routes which you can view online here. [Tennessean]
- The Vandy ER saw more than 90 folks over the weekend for sledding injuries while St. Thomas saw an additional 30. [WKRN]
- Every Coach’s Dream Chris Johnson wasn’t shy about declaring that he deserves to be “the highest paid running back in the league, or even the highest paid offensive player besides the quarterback,” though he did clarify that he’s not demanding it. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Then He Waved Goodbye Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Icy roads and stranded cars and roof collapsing aside, we have to say that we’re pretty sad to see #TheSituation2010 come to an end. We saw some creative snowmen, truly impressive sledding stunts (and some hilarious improvised sleds, and some nuns sledding…), Tokyo Cool Springs Mall drifting, citywide snowball fights and tasty new drink recipes. And for once, those weird little snowball-hurling polar bear statues didn’t seem so out of place. To quote the Tennessean, “Northerners might be better at driving on snow, but nobody appreciates the stuff like the people who have been waiting seven years to see it.” But for most of us, it’s back to real life and crossing our fingers that we don’t have to wait another seven years for the next storm.
- State of the State tonight. Governor Phil is gearing up to give his very last State of the State speech tonight at 6pm where he’ll address all sorts of unhappy things like layoffs and TennCare cuts and budget holes big enough to drive a car through. You can watch it unfold live at 6pm on News Channel 5 (we think).
- Hotel still up in the air. Some of the folks who were the most vocal about supporting the new convention center aren’t quite as eager to throw their support behind the convention center hotel project. Metro hopes to find a private financier for it, but it’s looking more and more likely that the city could end up footing the bill anyway.
- Bits & pieces. Nashville home prices might finally be nearing their peak … USA Today did a great spotlight on some of the sit-ins staged in Nashville during the Civil Rights Movement … Figuring out who gets to tap into Tennessee’s rainy day fund is not going to be an easy task … All Metro departments could be looking at another 7% budget cut across the board … Taylor Swift pretty much cleaned up at the Grammys last night.
