Bright & Early: Neck And Neck Edition

Good morning, Nashville. The seven main candidates in the 2010 Tennessee gubernatorial race went head to head last night at Belmont on all things education-related. The forum included candidates Bill Haslam, Mike McWherter, Zach Wamp, Ron Ramsey, Jim Kyle, Bill Gibbons and Kim McMillan, who covered the whole gamut of topics ranging from Pre-K to higher education. And thanks to Zach Wamp, we hear that there was indeed a Lane Kiffin mention.

Happy Hour: Sunny Side Up

  • We do a lot of hating on the TVA around here, but we’ve got nothing but love for the 200 care packages they put together for troops in Afghanistan. [WSMV]
  • And also, they bought some new wind(-energy). [WPLN]
  • It’s been so long that we almost forgot what it was like, but a large chunk of westbound I-440 will be shut down this weekend for some construction work. [WSMV]
  • Nashville will be making a very un-country splash at the Grammys with both Miley and newcomer Ke$ha slated to present at the awards. [Tennessean]
  • Blah blah Lane Kiffin blah blah blah UT football blah new coach, etc. [WPLN]
  • Despite previous reports of a media blackout, Sarah Palin has agreed to allow five outlets to cover her speech at the Tea Party Convention next month. We’ll give you a hint: At least one of them begins with “Fox” and ends with “News.” [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Troubled Waters Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re hearing plenty of harrowing reports about Tennesseans who were in Haiti on mission trips when the earthquake hit, but members of Nashville’s Haitian community (yes, we have one of those) are also trying to get in touch with relatives back home who were likely affected. Much like Fisk University Haitian radio host Caismy Sejour and his wife, most have been unable to make contact with relatives to find out whether or not they survived. Our thoughts and prayers are with these folks as they wait.

Happy Hour: Priorities, Priorities

  • The kind folks at the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee have established a Haiti Earthquake Response Fund for the purpose of channeling local donations to reputable aid groups in need of financial resources to help with the disaster relief. [Nashville Is Talking]
  • In the midst of all this global need, we are very, very comforted by the fact that our own Governor Phil couldn’t seem to care less about the Lane Kiffin fiasco going on in East Tennessee. Which he emphasizes in this interview, over and over. [Pith In The Wind]
  • Unfortunately we can’t say the same about the rest of the earth where Lane Kiffin is mentioned here, there, and everywhere, leaving us with nothing else to post about except for this story. [Everywhere]
  • Oh, but at least someone in Knoxville is using his head. The owner of the store Hound Dogs is “encouraging upset University of Tennessee fans not to burn their Lane Kiffin T-shirts, but to let him send them to Haiti.” And if you donate your shirt, he’ll give you 20% off of a brand new one. This sounds reasonable to us. [WTVF]

Bright & (Not So) Early: Aftermath Edition

Good morning, Nashville. By now, we’re sure everyone has heard about the massive earthquake that struck Haiti yesterday. Eight Nashvillians were in Haiti doing mission work at the time and survived, notifying church members and friends back home by text message. Congressman Jim Cooper is working closely with the State Department to identify and locate any other Tennesseans who might have been caught in the quake so that US officials can organize some rescue and recovery missions. If you have any information about folks who might be stranded, call Rep. Cooper’s local office at 615-736-5295. For those looking for a quick and easy way to contribute to relief efforts, you can donate $10 to the Red Cross by simply texting “HAITI” to 90999.

Happy Hour: Big Shoes To Fill

  • Nashville survived the latest round of cuts to join a list of 18 cities who are still being considered for hosting the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. [WPLN]
  • An air traffic control tower burst into flames at the Nashville Airport this afternoon and shut down the whole airport! … Okay, fine. There was a small fire in an air traffic control tower at the Nashville Airport and six flights were delayed for 45 minutes. Thankfully no one was injured. [WZTV]
  • The State Senate voted to delay the paper ballot requirement for voting machines until the 2012 election cycle and voting advocates were none too pleased. [Tennessean]
  • There are a bunch of dead bodies at Rivergate Mall, though it’s probably not what you think. [Nashville Is Talking]
  • The Better Business Bureau of Tennessee concluded that 2009 was a tough year for scams across the state. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Up Up And Away Edition

Good morning, Nashville. You may have noticed the gas prices quietly crawling up over the past few weeks and as of this week, they’ve hit a 15-month high averaging $2.65 per gallon in the midstate. Experts say that it has a lot to do with this cold weather we’ve been seeing and the fact that we’re all using more gas now that the economy is slowly getting better. Though everyone seems to doubt it’ll get as bad as the Nashville Gas Crisis Of Aught Eight, we can’t help but get a little nervous every time prices spike 10 or 15 cents overnight.

Happy Hour: Look For The Warning Signs

  • All the water main breaks (a total of 60 so far) finally got to Metro Water Services, and this morning they announced that they’ll be replacing more than half of the city’s water infrastructure. [WKRN]
  • The demand for certain GM cars has seemingly risen and the automotive giant is now considering reopening a few plants to keep up–including Spring Hill. The Spring Hill plant idled indefinitely the day before Thanksgiving and discontinued around 3,000 jobs. [Tennessean]
  • Last week, the TVA region used more energy than in any other 7-day period in recorded history. Presumably, everyone was just cranking up the heat. [WTVF]
  • Which leads us to this terrifying article about how we’re possibly entering a mini ice age. Do-not-like! [DailyMail]
  • Somewhere out there, 10 Nashville drivers exist who owe a collective $118,638 in unpaid traffic citations. [WSMV]
