While most of Nashville is snowed in, there are a few crazies (read: us) who want to leave the house and venture out into the wild for a hearty meal or a warm cup o’joe. Bright & Early: #TheSituation2010
Good morning, Nashville. Whether you’re reading this from under your covers at home or you’re cursing the school children for that snow day you didn’t get, the winter weather is on its way. As predicted, the city is taking every possible precaution including readying emergency response crews, putting the electric company on standby, working out a plan for towing abandoned vehicles, preparing to de-ice the airport, closing down the schools, and of course stocking up on the essentials. We’re already hearing some reports of slick spots on the roads and bridges that have iced over, so we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Be careful! Weather.com is reporting that “this could very well end up being one of the top snowstorms in Nashville history.”
- Music City Center preparation begins. Metro announced some road and parking lot closures starting next week while they try to prep things for construction of the new convention center. This “prep” includes removing “asbestos and other hazardous materials,” so you’ll probably find us moseying around the city the long way.
- Roadmap for the Bible. The Tennessee Board of Education approved a curriculum which teachers can use to teach the Bible in schools. The curriculum is supposed to be a roadmap of sorts to keep the teaching consistent and non-controversial–which, in itself, is probably going to be controversial.
- Bits & pieces. A Nashville doctor is running between here and Haiti trying to inoculate earthquake survivors for various diseases … The economic whizzes at MTSU say that there’s a 50% chance we could be back at a “normal” unemployment rate by 2014 … A local bail bondsman whose face is on MTA benches all over town has the same name as the fast food robber, and they look the same and went to school together! Isn’t that funny/unfortunate??

Happy Hour: So It Begins
- School districts are already shutting down in anticipation of this, #TheSituation2010, including all the usual suspects: Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, Sumner, and just about every other district in the midstate. Here we go! [WKRN]
- Local and national weather-folk are predicting anywhere from 1 to 12 inches of snow, though we’re most commonly seeing projected amounts of about 4 to 6″. And fun and games aside, we could see as much as a 1/2-inch of ice caked on roads, trees and powerlines before the snow starts falling. So before you start making fun of Nashville drivers and Hoarders Of Bread And Milk, be sure you’re covered in the event that things do get nasty. [NashvilleWX]
- Metro is still on the fence about what they’re going to do about Tent City, a semi-permanent homeless encampment near downtown. Though Mayor Dean opted not to shut it down last year as originally planned, city officials are examining some other housing options, citing safety as the primary issue. [WSMV]
- As of July, there will be an extra $2 tax on tickets to events at LP Field including Titans games, which will hopefully help them keep the facility looking pretty. [City Paper]

Bright & Early: It’s All Fun And Games Edition
Good morning, Nashville. It seems that everyone has snow on the brain as more predictions about #thesituation2010 continue to surface. At the moment, HPC and the National Weather Service put us at four inches of snow on Friday during the day with the probability of some more accumulation on Saturday. The real issue of concern will be the initial layer of ice that could happen before the precipitation changes over to snow, in which case we could see some pretty hazardous driving conditions and power outages. Salt trucks have been out since yesterday doing their thing and coating the pavement (and our cars) with brine. So as much as we kid, please–pretty please?–be careful out there. And cross your fingers that the remaining water mains hold up.
- Big cuts for MNPS. Because of our city’s budget trouble, the money available to train Metro teachers on safety issues like drug abuse, gangs, and bullying will be cut in half next year. Many teachers who deal with those things on a daily basis are concerned that they won’t be equipped to handle the situations that come up.
- Health care for smokers. State Rep. Mike Turner withdrew his proposal to deny health insurance for all state workers who use tobacco products, but mostly because it could hurt the tobacco industry in Tennessee.
- Bits & pieces. Local Toyota dealerships have been flooded with calls and visits from folks who are concerned about that enormous recall … Despite all the hoopla about Metro’s LED sign ordinances, they won’t be making exceptions to the current rules any time soon … Congrats to Kevin Mawae for making the NFL all-decade team …

Happy Hour: If You Can’t Say Anything Nice
- The guy who robbed the Suntrust on Commerce this week was nabbed by police after an observant citizen who overheard him bragging a little too loudly and called the cops. [Tennessean]
- Tennessee is one of the states affected by a widespread salami recall. So if you bought any of it recently, you may want to check into this before you eat it. [WSMV]
- #thesituation2010 is less a matter of “if” and more a matter of “how much” according to the trusty folks at Nashville WX. So if we wake up on Friday or Saturday and there is no snow on the ground, you know who to yell at. The current forecast puts us around four inches or more. [Nashville WX]
- If you have any extra bamboo hanging around, the elephants at the Nashville Zoo need some food for the winter. They’ll even cut it for you if you live close by. Just make sure that it doesn’t have any bird poop or nasty bugs on it because elephants do not enjoy those things. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Railroaded Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Two weeks ago, officials with Metro Schools predicted a $35 million budget shortfall for the 2010 fiscal year, but the number has since been raised to $38 million. On top of a sales tax revenue shortage, the district also shell out some extra cash for higher-than-predicted employee insurance rates and 300 new charter school students. Consequently, we can expect to see some serious cuts for Metro this year.
- New round of layoffs. Metro won’t be the only one making cuts, though; Governor Phil has confirmed that he will be announcing some new layoffs when he makes his State of the State address on February 9th.
- Nasty nasty. A power outage at a waste treatment plant near Chattanooga has sent raw sewage floating down the Tennessee River from three different locations. We sure feel for our neighbors in the ‘Noog this morning.
- Bits & pieces. The projected open date for the new medical mart downtown, which will be housed in the current convention center, has been bumped up from 2016 to 2013 … No, Governor Phil is not switching parties … More updates on the Snow Situation on Friday … Lawmakers are mulling over a bill which would make it illegal to use taxpayer money to buy bottled water for the folks at the legislature.

Happy Hour: We Have A Situation
- Nashville WX is doing a great job making sure they don’t build up our hopes and then crush them keeping us ahead of Friday’s storm, which they have decided to call “The Ice/Snow Situation.” Your Nashvillest will be following suit, but shortening the nickname to “The Situation,” or #thesituation2010. And actually, this one does look like it could get nasty. [Nashville WX]
- Forget bread and milk, though. What we need to be stockpiling is synthetic urine, which will probably be illegal soon. [WSMV]
- Fresh off the news that Metro may soon be auctioning off our city’s parking to the highest bidder, Mayor Dean announced a new program which would turn old parking meters into donation bins to fight homelessness, stating that “homelessness is not a government issue.” The meters will be sponsored by companies like Southwest and Piedmont Natural Gas and the money will go towards organizations that assist homeless folks in Nashville. [City Paper]
- Franklin has a fancy new city website that includes pictures and videos and downloads and newsletters and calendars and pretty much anything else you would need to keep up with important matters like a citywide ban on chain-link fences. [Tennessean]
- The Cool Springs Target was evacuated this afternoon after several employees became sick from something that they were unpacking in the back part of the store, which turned out to be some sort of pesticide. None of the affected employees were hospitalized. [WKRN]
- According to TDOT, they’re 43% finished with all of those transportation stimulus projects. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: What To Do With Bellevue Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Folks in Bellevue have been talking with the Metro Council about rezoning the Bellevue Center Mall turned into another incarnation of Hillwood High School, whose current building would be shut down. At the moment, the plan is to turn the mall into a mixed-use development (although Eric Crafton and Facebook seem to think they can convince someone to turn it into an IKEA), but not a whole progress has been made there. After a few years of watching it sit there empty, we’ll just be happy when someone does something with it.
- Green Hills traffic continues to suck. We’re hearing more speculation about the traffic nightmare that will be (and already is) Hillsboro Road in Green Hills after the news that Vanderbilt University Medical Center will be plopping an office right next to the movie theater which will add about 500 new commuters to the mix. Nordstrom is also expected to add to the fray when it’s completed in 2011, so TDOT is currently studying traffic patterns to see if there’s anything they can do.
- It’s pay day. Mayor Dean is checking into the option of selling all of our city’s parking to the highest-bidding private company to make some quick cash before the next budget cycle starts, so that rather than getting the ongoing payout from parking meters and garages, they’d just collect a much larger chunk of money up front. With regards to next year’s budget, Councilman Michael Craddock said, “I think we are going to have a train wreck of monumental proportions come May,” which is not really what we want to hear at all.
- Bits & pieces. Consider this your second official warning about this weekend’s Twilight convention at Opryland … Cold and windy today with the possibility of a big snow and ice storm this weekend. Bread and milk! … Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee’s hard drive heist in Chattanooga ended up costing the company $7 million … Just when we thought we’d heard the last of it, the controversial “second downtown” May Town development proposed for Bells Bend could be back for another round.

Happy Hour: Wall To Wall
- A local church put together and sent out 10,000 health kits to help with the relief work in Haiti. [WSMV]
- Friends and neighbors of the family that was killed in a duplex fire this morning are hoping to come together and raise some money for the two surviving children. Five people, including the parents and three children, were killed in the early-morning blaze and a 3-year old and 7-year old are hospitalized at Vanderbilt. [WKRN]
- The Preds and the Sommet finally reached some sort of compromise on the naming deal, so the center will keep its current moniker. We’re just happy we don’t have to read about either party lobbing IRS accusations at the other for now. [Nashville Post]
- Brace yourselves for Snowpocalypse part deux! Maybe. [City Paper]
- After some poking around, the folks at WSMV discovered that a new Opryland theme park may not be out of the question now that Gaylord is trying to beef up its operations to remain competitive with the new convention center. We haven’t been around here long enough to remember the old one, but we understand this would be a big deal. [WSMV]
