Happy Hour: It Must Be Something In The Water
- We’re not sure if we’ve hit and all-time high or and all-time low with the Titans now that Chris Johnson has bribed the team’s offensive linemen with new cars if he can hit the 2000-yard mark this season. [City Paper]
- “Strange things happen to those who enter one Mid-state house. Invisible fire ants bite your feet. Fillings in your teeth throb with pain. Then there’s the mysterious light.” We are not quite sure what to make of this one, Channel 5. [WTVF]
- And then there is the guy who says that Jesus appears in the condensation on his pickup truck regularly. [WZTV]
- We should find out today what will happen to the woman who was arrested for Facebook-poking someone who had a restraining order against her. [WSMV]
- The company that owns the largest chunk of land in the new convention center site is now suing the Metro Development and Housing Agency just so they can see their own property appraisals. [WPLN]

Clear The Roads, Cool Springs: Chuy’s Open For Business (And Heading For The ‘Boro)

Nashville, we have a confession to make. We got to try out the new Chuy’s in Cool Springs before its official grand opening on Monday evening, and we forgot to fill you in. Our feeble excuse? Food coma.
Chuy’s really doesn’t need reviewing (we were actually late for our reservation because we couldn’t squeeze our car in among the Texas license plates). The place was jam-packed with loyal Chuy’s Facebook fans enjoying a free meal, and we could barely navigate through them to the bar to order a tasty Chuy’s ‘Rita. And at the grand opening on Tuesday, things weren’t any different – our undercover Chuy’s operative reports that he waited 45 minutes for a table.
If you’ve gotten this far and are completely baffled, you must not be from Texas (it’s okay, neither are we). Chuy’s is a funky tex-mex restaurant with a cultish following, and their first location outside of Texas just happens to be (almost) in town (as if Cool Springs traffic needed to get any worse). Check out our first post about Chuy’s coming to Tennessee to fill in some of the blanks.
Chuy’s must see a bright future in Middle Tennessee – Plans are already in the works for a Murfreesboro location to open. The Murfreesboro restaurant will be the second in Tennessee and the 17th location overall for the chain. The ‘Boro Chuy’s will move in at the former Davy Crockett’s building on Northwest Broad Street, and will be open for business in Spring 2010.

Belcourt Does A Little Sundance: 2010 Film Festival Goes Nationwide

We’re grinning from ear to ear as we bring you this news – Nashville’s very own Belcourt Theatre has been selected as one of eight independent theatres nationwide to host the brand-new expanded Sundance Film Festival USA. On January 28, 2010, eight filmmakers will take their films on the road for “a night of ideas across the country,” stopping at The Belcourt and in theatres in Ann Arbor, MI (Michigan Theater), Brookline, MA (Coolidge Corner Theatre), Brooklyn, NY (BAM), Chicago, IL (Music Box Theatre), Los Angeles, CA (Downtown Independent), Madison, WI (Sundance Cinemas Madison) and San Francisco, CA (Sundance Kabuki Cinemas).
Theatres will host a screening and Q&A session with the filmmaker, as well as a pre-show program featuring highlights from the real Sundance in Utah. Specific films and filmmakers have yet to be announced, but we’ll keep you updated. Tickets will go on sale Friday, December 11.
Congrats to The Belcourt!

Bright & Early: All Is Fair Edition
Good morning, Nashville. There may be hope yet for the Tennessee State Fair thanks to some new proposals by everyone’s favorite Metro Councilman Eric Crafton. Councilman Crafton has drafted a resolution that would extend the life of the fair through 2010, giving advocates more time to come up with a way to save it. The other part of the plan includes an ordinance that would ban any other use of the fairgrounds other than everything that currently operates there, such as the fair, flea market, and roller derby.
- Rethinking the H1N1 vaccine. In case your kids didn’t have enough fun with the H1N1 flu vaccine the first time around, further testing has determined that kids under 9 actually need two doses in order for it to be effective. Unfortunately the Metro Health Department is all out, again.
- Spring Hill GM to close. The Spring Hill GM plant is slated to close in just a few weeks around Thanksgiving, leaving approximately 2,000 people without work. Governor Phil is trying to brace the state for the inevitable increase in unemployment claims.
- Bits & pieces. An MTSU professor has apologized after making students sign a pledge stating that cheating on their exam would be a fast-track ticket to hell … Kevin Mawae and Albert “Speedy” Haynesworth were voted two of the dirtiest players in the NFL … Upon further analysis, Metro Schools still aren’t doing so hot … The head of Nashville’s Parks & Rec department may resign after the revelation that his department is facing a nearly $2 million deficit.

Happy Hour: Keep On Truckin’
- We got our state report card today and there is some good news: Our high school graduation rate has gone up! The bad news is that our kids still can’t read good. [Tennessean]
- Some former Six Flags execs have purchased Nashville Shores, but don’t get your hopes up because they already said they’re not building us any rollercoasters. What fun is that? [Nashville Is Talking]
- Oh, did you want to see Al Gore at Davis-Kidd next weekend? Good luck with that. And don’t even think about trying to sneak a camera in. And no, he will not sign your [insert item which is not a book]. [Tennessean]
- The lawsuit against Metro Schools and their controversial rezoning plan had its first day in federal court today. The lawsuit claims that the school rezoning that went into effect this year re-segregated Nashville schools and grouped kids from bad neighborhoods into bad schools with no books. [WKRN]
- “Contrary to what you may have heard, nobody was shot on the campus of Tennessee State University today.” Awesome. [Tennessean]
- A suspicious package in Lebanon which turned out to be a poorly-wrapped bench (?? – Ed.) made for a messy commute on the Music City Star this evening. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: Disaster Tourism Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Roane County may be putting the kibosh on the TVA’s plans to build an overlook for passers-by to view the progress on the coal ash cleanup. According to county officials, the TVA never consulted them before developing the viewing area which is supposed to include a parking lot big enough for 20 cars. The TVA claims that they were only trying to promote transparency, but some folks would rather try to forget about it and not have the extra traffic from visitors gawking at the site. In related news, the EPA is also considering some new guidelines for handling coal ash that critics complain will make it easier for the TVA to bypass hazmat regulations.
- Controversy in the Hills. A new billboard in Green Hills is causing some ruckus, and no, it’s not that borderline-inappropriate one with the shirtless dude bragging about only putting the best wood on tables.
- Wear your helmets. It was apparently a rough night downtown with a drunk driver taking out a light pole at 3rd and Commerce and a dead body turning up at 5th and Church.
- Bits & pieces. A thousand more H1N1 flu shots made their way into Nashville yesterday … A local dentist is paying kids by the pound for their Halloween candy … Congrats to Preds goalie Pekka Rinne for being named NHL’s second star of the week … Metro Council will discuss some new regulations for adult businesses.

Happy Hour: And… Freeze!
- We’re looking at a possible first freeze tonight. Bring those plants inside! [WSMV]
- A Ft. Campbell soldier was arrested yesterday after nearly 100 pounds of C-4 explosives were found at his house. No one has determined why he was hoarding them. [WKRN]
- But speaking of blowing things up, TDOT started blasting on I-40 and White Bridge this morning and it’s scheduled to continue through Wednesday from 10am-1pm each day, conveniently disrupting lunch hours for the entirety of West Nashville. [WKRN]
- Wilson County forgot to pay its emergency personnel last weekend because of a slight mixup at the finance office. Oops! [WKRN]
- We can’t get too down on Vanderbilt for losing yesterday since Florida actually tried to gouge their eyes out on the field. [Tennessean]
- People in Williamson County must really want the H1N1 vaccine. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: We’ll Call It A Comeback Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We have to admit that the sun is shining a little brighter this morning since the Titans racked up their first win of 2009 yesterday. Whether we have Chris Johnson’s momma, the ceremonial stomping of the “terrible towel” (what?), or VY™’s mad skills to thank, we’ll take it. It was a good weekend all around for Tennessee sports with the Preds scoring another win against Dallas and the Vols taking down South Carolina, even if Vandy didn’t quite make it to the party. Three out of four ain’t bad, right?
- Clean water? A recent study revealed that 90% of the water supply in the Keith Springs part of Franklin County (about 90 minutes from Chattanooga) is contaminated with e. coli and other kinds of bacteria. Residents have been asking for an actual water system for years.
- Carbon monoxide leak at Vandy. A carbon monoxide leak in an off-campus Vanderbilt dorm sent three students to the hospital last night. None of the students were severely hurt and the leak turned out to be from a busted hot water heater.
- Bits & pieces. Nashville is getting $3.1 million in new stimulus money to help folks who are recently homeless … If it keeps raining, that rock slide cleanup on I-40 could take a long, long time … Nashville could use some more affordable housing downtown, say the critics … If you weren’t in one of the high-risk groups and still want the H1N1 vaccine shot, you may be in luck.
