Happy Hour: Ready, Set, Fight
- We’re not sure which is funnier: The fact that Stephen Colbert almost had a Knoxville building named after him, the honorary parking space they gave him instead, or guy holding up Colbert’s honorary parking sign in all of the photos whose name is “Chuck Morris.” [KnoxNews]
- Or maybe that everyone’s favorite blogging state rep Stacey Campfield was escorted out of a UT football game because he was wearing a Mexican wrestler’s mask and then mouthed off to the police when he was asked to remove it. [WSMV]
- Our foreclosure rates here in Tennessee aren’t rising quite as quickly as other states, so that’s cause for celebration. [Post Business]
- If you’ve ever wanted to participate in one of Vanderbilt’s clinical trials (or, say, you wanted to volunteer your infant for an experimental swine flu vaccine), they just launched a website to make that easier than ever. [WPLN]
- Thanks to that $2 million Parks & Rec deficit we told you about a few weeks ago, the department will now be shutting down five community centers and probably laying off 55 people to try to recoup the loss. [City Paper]

But there’s even better news: We don’t have to wait ’till Friday to get our Chipotle on. Tomorrow (Wednesday), everyone’s invited to stop by between 11am-7pm to grab a burrito, and it’s on the house! It’s true. Tomorrow, Chipotle will be doling out the free burritos. We’re expecting long lines and a lot of happy people, and you can count us among them.
Here’s a little something for the Chipotle superfans: Is Chipotle In Nashville Yet?

Happy Hour: Going For The Gold
- Well, it’s official: Parking meters will no longer be free on Saturdays. There are seven Saturdays left in 2009, so you have seven Saturdays to free-park your hearts out. [WKRN]
- A Cookeville man was jailed for vandalism after smashing some sad person’s jack-o-lantern over the weekend. In fairness, Halloween has come and gone. [WSMV]
- Clarksville police are in hot pursuit of some criminals who stole a Chewbacca mask from a costume store. With all our hearts, we would like to see the mugshots when they catch these guys. [WSMV]
- It looks like we might have a pretty good shot at hosting the 2022 World Cup after all. [Tennessean]
- Nashville home sales are up 22% from last year. Hooray! [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Wait-Listed Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Tennessee’s drug assistance program for people with HIV/AIDS now has a waiting list thanks to folks losing jobs and insurance, along with an increase in the number of people living with the disease. Those overseeing the program hope that their own services can be supplemented with federal programs and pharmaceutical companies. Pregnant women and infants can be enrolled on an emergency basis. The program was originally created in 1990 to help give access to drugs and medical treatment for low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS. This is the first time it’s ever had a waiting list.
- Tea Partyin’. Hundreds of folks turned out on Saturday at the State Capitol building to protest the healthcare reform bill, which passed the US House of Representatives 220-215. Out of Tennessee’s nine representatives, Steve Cohen and Jim Cooper were the only ones to vote “yes.”
- Win-win. It was another good weekend for Nashville sports with the Titans pulling out another win over San Francisco yesterday and the Preds toppling the Kings on Saturday.
- Bits & pieces. Metro’s high school freshmen reportedly aren’t worried about the recession affecting their careers, probably because they don’t yet have careers … A middle Tennessean scored $1 million in that McDonald’s Monopoly game … Dolly Parton, Kid Rock, and Charlie Daniels were all inducted into the Music City Walk of Fame yesterday. Check out our pictures here … A Black History Month poster at a local high school mistakenly directed parents to call a sex chat line.

Happy Hour: Smooth Sailing
- About 8,500 people were stuck without power in Franklin this afternoon after a bird got into a fight with a substation and lost. [WSMV]
- Following some controversy about a certain per diem pay raise granted to our beloved state lawmakers, Rep. Judy Barker became the first one to actually turn it down. [WTVF]
- Governor Phil got a little defensive when a legislator mouthed off about a proposal to start creating biofuels out of East Tennessee’s switchgrass. [Tennessean]
- TSU and the local Nation of Islam chapter are both trying to figure out who started the rumor about NoI providing free additional security on campus. The news came in an announcement by TSU, which made headlines, but NoI insisted that was the first they’d heard of it. [Tennessean]
- Metro Police say that the ATM skimming operation we heard about last week has now resulted in around $270,000 stolen. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Paper Trails Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Despite a major setback in court this week, the fight continues for the statewide implementation of voter-verified paper ballots. Under the Tennessee Voter Confidence Act, all voting machines statewide are supposed to make the switch to the more reliable paper ballots and advocacy group Common Cause tried to file an injunction this week to ensure that the switch would happen by the 2010 elections. The injunction was denied, but the group may have a few more tricks up its sleeve as the year comes to a close.
- How much do we love the IRS. What better way to start the weekend than by finding out the IRS owes you money? Nearly 2,000 people still haven’t claimed their 2008 tax returns, so the agency has published a searchable list of names online.
- Gross alternative fuels. This weekend, Nashville is hosting the 11th annual Chem-E-Car competition where college kids can compete and test all sorts of weird alternative fuels like beef liver and beetle enzymes in hopes of eventually uncovering something revolutionary.
- Bits & pieces. In case you missed it yesterday, George Strait needs some extras for his movie next Wednesday … The Preds ended their winning streak yesterday :( … Just a few days after some earthquakes in East Tennessee, West Tennessee got the shakes this morning … Glad we cleared this one up.

Happy Hour: Lone Star
- Like everyone else in the country, we’ve been glued to the reports coming out of Ft. Hood in Texas all afternoon and our hearts go out to all the families of the victims. [Tennessean]
- The Ft. Campbell soldier who was found to be stockpiling military-grade explosives behind his house was released into his wife’s custody today. There’s still no indication of why he had them. [WKRN]
- The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia found that Tennessee is one of six states that looks like it may be emerging from the recession because of an improvement in overall economic health over the past three months. [Post Politics]
- Homicide has been ruled out in the case of the body discovered burning in dumpster near MTSU earlier this week, though we can’t think of too many circumstances in which it would be accidental. [WTVF]
- An arrest has finally been made in the White Bridge Target stabbing-robbery incident thanks to a Crime Stoppers tip. [City Paper]
- If you think you’re going to be bored next Wednesday, George Strait needs some extras for his movie. [WSMV]

How Now, The Wild Cow? Veggie Eats Return To East [Nashville Newcomers]

Looks like Rosepepper and Eastland Cafe have some new neighbors… Again. The Walden building across the street from these neighborhood staples has already welcomed three new friends in the past year, and they’re about to get a fourth. The Wild Cow Vegetarian Restaurant will be joining the ever-growing eatery hotspot in early December at 1896 Eastland (the unit in the Walden building that borders Eastland).
The Wild Cow will serve hearty, homestyle vegetarian and vegan food in a fun, casual atmosphere. The menu may even entice some omnivores, with veg*n versions of many restaurant favorites. Everything on their menu sounds familiar – That is, until you read the descriptions. But for those that shy away from foreign terms like “tempeh,” “tofu” and “seitan,” The Wild Cow even offers a bit of relief. How do “grilled cheese,” “nachos” and “burrito” sound? Owners John and Melanie Cochran have both been in the restaurant business for many years, and enjoy creating bold, flavorful meatless versions of popular dishes. And they’re dabbling in the gluten-free world with this new venture,
Our first question when we heard about the new veggie eatery coming to town was this – Why The Wild Cow, when cows certainly won’t be on the menu? Well, we got our answer. The name symbolizes The Wild Cow’s commitment to serving alternatives to food from factory farms, and a return to the “wild cow” comfortably grazing on the side of the road. Couple that with a perceived need for a more variety in meatless meals in East Nashville and a commitment to using local, organic produce and dairy (when available), and you have The Wild Cow.
We could go on and on. The menu is extensive, the prices are dirt cheap, the Sunday brunch is enticing and the grand opening is tentatively scheduled for December 1. The Wild Cow will be open Monday, Wednesday – Saturday from 10:30am to 9:30pm, Sunday 10:30am to 2:30pm, and closed on Tuesdays. Their website is a wealth of information, so if you have any questions visit TheWildCow.com. The vegetarian half of Nashvillest can’t wait to try it out, but if you beat us there, be sure to fill us in!

Bright & (Not So) Early: Don’t Forget Your Helmets Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We’re running behind this morning, so here is your abbreviated Bright & Early:
- Hazmat teams have been deployed to an incident at westbound I-24 and I-440 and all east- and westbound lanes are closed. They don’t expect it to be cleared until 2pm, which probably means 5pm. [WKRN]
- The Music City Center is facing some more criticism, this time from a group of musicians and producers who are accusing the MDHA of offering to relocate the Musicians’ Hall of Fame inside of the new convention center and then yanking the offer off the table. [WSMV]
- Hypodermic needles were discovered inside of the change slots in two MTSU vending machines this week. Though a student was pricked by one of the needles, no one is sure if anything dangerous was on or in them. [WKRN]
- The operator of the fairgrounds race track has canceled the last race of the season because he figured no one would come since everyone knows the track is closing anyway. [WSMV]
- Enjoy your free Saturday parking meters while they last. [WKRN]
