Bright & Early: Left Or Right Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Some West Nashvillians are concerned about Metro’s pending decision to move the West Precinct from the Hillwood neighborhood on Charlotte Pike to a new location near Sylvan Park. The Metro Council announced a plan to buy up an old Ford dealership at 5520 Charlotte Pike and renovate the space to make more room for the precinct in addition to adding a new DNA crime lab after various other deals fell through that were closer to the current location. The West Precinct is quickly running out of space, and officials are in a hurry to add more.
- Kingston cleanup. TVA officials expect cleanup in Kingston to be finished by Spring of next year–or phase one of the cleanup, that is. The first phase mostly encompasses the dredging of the Emory River, which is considered to be the most time-sensitive piece. As for the rest of it, they’re not sure how many years it could take and the price tag is expected to be upwards of $1 billion.
- Tightening the leash. After an accounting error that resulted in the loss of nearly $2,000 in federal funds for Metro Schools, Director Jesse Register has hired an outside firm to track and manage finances for the time being. Though the help comes to the tune of $1 million, Dr. Register insists that they need it.
- Bits & pieces. The Governor’s Highway Safety Office is setting out to reduce Tennessee’s traffic fatalities by 10% by 2012 … In the face of the recession, the Downtown Partnership says that our downtown is doing just fine(ish) … An advocacy group is suing the Secretary of State for not implementing Tennessee’s new law about voter-verified paper ballots … Metro Police arrested a woman who was allegedly planning a jailbreak involving a helicopter for a well-known gang leader and drug lord.

Happy Hour: Dividing And Conquering
- Roane County has made quick work of the $43 million given to them by the TVA as a peace offering for spilling 5 million cubic yards of toxic nastiness all over Kingston. Most of the money will be going towards schools, and the remainder will be set aside for roads, sewers, libraries, and a new arts center. [WSMV]
- The numbers are in and it looks like we had our second-wettest September in recorded history, coming up about 0.35″ shy of the record set in 1979. [WTVF]
- The Music City Star commuter train could be adding a new stop in Lakewood and will be conducting a two-week trial period to see if there’s enough interest. [WTVF]
- Our friends over at the Scene made the priceless discovery that tickets for Creed’s Sommet Center appearance have been dropped to $7.79 which, as they point out, is actually cheaper than buying a beer at the venue. Ouch! [Nashville Cream]

Free Fall Weekend At Cheekwood [Freebies]

It’s been a while since we’ve enjoyed a nice free day at Cheekwood, and with the recent temperature drop, this weekend is a perfect time to throw on a hoodie and roam around outdoors enjoying the new season. Cheekwood, normally $10 at the door, is free this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday hours are 9:30am-4:30pm and Sunday hours are 11am-4:30pm.
And to make things even more fun, Cheekwood has a fall display of 65 scarecrows scattered around the gardens. We’re planning a fall weekend full of apple picking, scarecrow-hunting and pumpkin spice lattes – who’s with us?

Bright & Early: Just Say No To H1N1 Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Unlike several other states, Tennessee won’t be requiring any of its residents to be vaccinated for H1N1. The first batches of the vaccine are set to arrive in our state next week but will go to high-risk professionals such as hospitals and health care providers. The next round will be reserved for pregnant women, small children, and young adults. Everyone else should be able to receive it at the end of this month or in early November.
- Concern over Tent City. Metro Police are becoming increasingly concerned about the crime rate increase around Nashville homeless encampment Tent City, which was supposedly being evicted gradually over a year ago. They say that residents are returning and despite the 18% decrease in crime in the Central Precinct, crime is up by 21% around the encampment. Metro Councilman Erik Cole maintains that repeated arrests aren’t effective without the appropriate support services in place.
- Healthcare costs on the rise. A new study shows that Tennessee’s healthcare costs could increase by 67% by 2019 in the worst-case scenario if there is no systemic reform.
- Bits & pieces. Another chemical spill at the CSX train yard in South Nashville overnight injured one worker … Enjoy the nice weather today because it’s going to be raining again tomorrow … The West End Panera butt-grabber has fessed up to his deeds … The inmate who claimed that a Davidson County sheriff stole his prosthetic leg has settled with the department for $5,000 … Mechelle McNair is seeking permission to sell her late husband’s 80% share in the Gridiron 9 restaurant.
