Happy Hour: Easy As 1-2-3

  • Tennessee’s students are still a little behind the rest of the country when it comes to math scores. We wish we were surprised. [Tennessean]
  • A wheelchair-bound woman with Lou Gerhig’s Disease is getting kicked off of TennCare because the $284 Social Security check she’s collecting each month puts her over the income limit. The check is a survivor benefit from her father’s murder a year ago. [WSMV]
  • The guy who caused a Delta flight to be diverted to Nashville yesterday after harassing other passengers while quoting scripture is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation today. [Tennessean]
  • Jevon Kearse is not sorry for leaving Sunday’s game once he found out he wasn’t on the roster. And with the way things are going this season, we can’t say we blame him. [Tennessean]

Dose Coffee & Tea Replaces Murphy Road Portland Brew [Nashville Newcomers]

Don’t be alarmed if you happen to be driving by when the Portland Brew sign at Murphy Road comes tumbling down – The coffee shop has indeed departed from the Portland Brew fold, but the caffeine isn’t going anywhere. New owners Heath Henley and Keith Steunebrink, both former employees of Portland Brew, have spiffed the place up with a new coat of paint, some shiny new lights, a modified seating arrangement and interior flow, and the new sign announcing the arrival of Dose Coffee & Tea will be installed this week.

In addition to a fresh face-scrubbing and the name change, the new/old coffee shop will keep offerings that Portland Brew fans have grown to love, and improve on the concept with a few tricks of their own. Look for a new lunch menu coming this month, and in the meantime, a bounty of fresh baked goods are pouring forth from co-tenant Marmellata Bakery. Dose will also begin roasting their own coffee at MST Coffee Roasters in the near future, and will have a variety of coffees from local, regional, national and potentially international roasters available on the shelves for purchase. Henley compares their plans for coffee offerings to that of a wine shop, but on a smaller scale.

Dose Coffee & Tea will initially retain Portland Brew’s hours of 7am-7pm Monday through Saturday, with plans to open on Sunday after renovations are completed in mid-to-late November. Follow the transformation on Facebook, or drop by and give Dose a shot for yourself.

It feels like it’s been forever since we’ve seen the delightfully neon Donut Den sign lighting the way for Green Hills. But thanks to some savvy Nashvillest Twitter operatives, we learned that it was put back into its rightful place this morning. Great job, troops.

MTA Gets Its Google On: Google Transit For Nashville Is Here

While we noticed a landing page for Nashville on Google Transit a little over a month ago, the official announcement didn’t come until yesterday that Nashville MTA has officially partnered with Google Transit for riders’ trip planning needs. “Big deal,” you say, “Bus trip planning on the interwebs?” “Big deal indeed,” we say. Have you ever tried to plan a trip via bus in Nashville? Google Transit makes it pretty foolproof (too bad they can’t make transfers foolproof, while they’re at it).

MTA commuters can now plug in their location, destination and the time they wish to depart or arrive, and the Google will work its magic and spit out the three best options for your trip (including travel time, the number of transfers and even street view with walking directions).

Speaking of improvements to the Nashville bus system, commuters from Franklin will have a new way to get to downtown workplaces in the coming months, via the Nashville Regional Transit Authority. Federal stimulus money is paying for a brand-new commuter bus from Williamson County to Davidson County, beginning on December 1. From The Tennessean:

Jim McAteer, director for planning for the RTA, said riders will be able to catch a bus at locations in Spring Hill, Franklin and Brentwood and, for $3.50, ride to downtown Nashville each morning via Interstate 65. Evening service will be offered as well.

With the addition of Google Transit and a commuter bus from Franklin, we can’t help but hope that we’ll continue to see improvements to Nashville’s public transportation system.

Bright & Early: Flu-Proof Edition

Good morning, Nashville. More than 500 folks took advantage of the Metro Health Department’s free H1N1 vaccine offers yesterday, which is around eight times the amount of health officials who showed up to receive the vaccine the day before. Metro hopes to have enough nasal spray and injection doses throughout the season, though the injections won’t be arriving for another few weeks. As we mentioned yesterday, you can get vaccinated at the Metro Health Department Fast Track clinic downtown from 7am-4pm.

Contribute 2009: Buy Local, Nashville!

Readers both new and old should know at least one thing about Nashvillest:  We’re all about supporting our local businesses. Not that we don’t chow down on a chain-store burrito or two every now and again, but we’re firm believers in the fact that the unique, locally-owned businesses in town make Nashville, well, Nashville.

Our love for local businesses is so strong, we’re jumping on board with Contribute 2009, a nationwide initiative to encourage consumers to pledge to spend $50 at a local business in the coming days. Contribute 2009 officially began yesterday, October 12, but shoppers are encouraged to support their local businesses anytime this week (and any other time, of course!). If 99,999 others join us in our pledge to spend $50 at a small local business this week, $5 million will be spread around to our friends, neighbors and families. While $50 may sound like a lot, there are plenty of locally-owned small businesses that provide everyday essentials such as groceries, cleaning supplies, clothing and coffee (suddenly, $50 doesn’t seem like that much…).

We encourage you to join us in supporting our community this week. Hit up pie & pint night with a friend or five, stock up on groceries at The Turnip Truck instead of battling traffic in Green Hills, or kick off your Christmas shopping at one of the many locally-owned boutiques in 12 South, Edgehill Village or East Nashville.

Drop us a line in the comments if you plan on participating, and let’s hear your suggestions for small local businesses that could use our dollars.

If you’re looking to us for ideas, just take a trip down memory lane with us. We’ll make it easy for you: Ugly Mugs. Fresh Blends. The Silly Goose. Crema. Nuvo Burrito. The Green Wagon. The Local Taco. Prince’s. Nashville Farmer’s Market. Fleur de Lis Flavors. DrinkHaus. Zumi Sushi. The Belcourt. Tennessee Repertory Theatre. The Perch. Elena’s Cafe. [And more, but we're not ambitious enough to dig through THAT many archives.]

October Fools: East Nashville Not Really Getting Tunnel To Downtown

Bongo Java has a message for you East Nashvillians who really thought that a rooftop bowling alley, mini-movie theatre and an UNDERGROUND TUNNEL were moving in next door to their 11th Street location: J/K, guyz!

Turns out that Nashville is a little more gullible than they thought, and Bongo had to take the fun out of it by explaining the joke. While they did purchase the lot next door, they currently have no plans to dig a tunnel to downtown. From the Bongo Java newsletter:

The sign on the left here hangs on the empty lot next to Bongo Java Roasting Co. in East Nashville.  The East Nashville ListServe was quickly filled with speculation of “is it true?” and “who dunnit” and the like.  We even got an email thanking the developer for bringing this to the neighborhood.

We’re here to set the record straight:  we recently bought the property; we have no current plans for the site; the sign was an early April Fool’s Day joke.  Sorry.  East Nashvillians will have to wait for an underground tunnel to Downtown.
[Thanks to our friend Adria, who set the record straight all the way from Jerusalem for us!]

Bright & Early: The Vaccine Is Here Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Starting this morning, the Metro Nashville Health Department is giving out free H1N1 flu vaccines to the general public. Though they originally planned to save the first 4,900 doses for healthcare professionals, only 64 actually showed up yesterday. Officials are recommending that kids and young adults receive it first since they’re the most susceptible and it hasn’t been approved for pregnant women, another vulnerable group. Currently only a live vaccine in nasal spray form is available, but shots are expected to arrive a little later in the season. The clinic is open from 7am-4pm today (directions).
