New Nashville Eateries & Ninety Percent Off At Restaurant.com
We’ve talked about Restaurant.com before, but a quick flip through their Nashville-area gift certificate offers was a pleasant surprise for us this afternoon. A handful of our favorite places have been added to the discount site, where you can get $25 gift certificates for just $10 every day. Why were we casually browsing Restaurant.com this afternoon? Why, to use our 90% off discount code, of course! Today through September 13, use discount code NINETY to receive 90% off your order. $25 gift certificates are just $1, $50 gift certificates are $2, and a high-rollin’ $100 gift certificate is a whopping $4 during the promotion.
Yes, there’s a catch. Sort of. These gift certificates do expire, usually a year from the date of purchase, and most (if not all) of them have minimum purchase amounts and are not redeemable for alcohol. Most of the $25 gift certificates are valid on a minimum order of $35, which is still a pretty great deal, but read the fine print before you purchase!
Formerly, the site listed very few options in Nashville, but some of the newer offers at Restaurant.com are Pied Piper Eatery, Zavos, Taste of Russia, Bronte Bistro at Davis-Kidd, Chinatown Restaurant, Ken’s Sushi and Mad Platter. The gift certificates do sell out, and we’ll race you to them!
9/9/09 really is a magical day.

Happy Hour: We’ve Got Our Work Cut Out
- Historic Nashville, the group responsible for saving the Ryman Auditorium back in the ’90s, has released a list of historic places that are the most endangered. The list includes our precious flashy neon signs like the one that used to guide us to the Donut Den on our darkest of nights. Leave the neon signs alone, please! [WPLN]
- And neon signs aren’t the only thing in need to saving, apparently: The Scene reports that our beloved Family Wash may not be serving up their savory shepherd’s pie much longer. Nashvillest pint and pie night next week, anyone? [Nashville Scene]
- In case you weren’t a giant fan of the Tennessee state quarters that came out a few years ago that featured the stereotypical twangin’ guitars (or were they fiddles?) on the back, we’re getting another shot at it with a new Tennessee quarter that depicts the Smokies. [WPLN]
- Police have sent out special hazmat teams to check out a package at Charlotte and Old Hickory in Bellevue, which we hear has caused quite the pile-up in both directions. [WSMV]
- A new program at Meharry Medical College aims to reduce Tennessee’s infant mortality rate, which is among the highest in the nation. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Where We Left Off Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Thanks to the NAACP’s lawsuit against Metro Schools over the controversial rezoning measure, about half of the schools in the system have been found to be missing the textbooks they need to start the school year. School officials say that the shortage is so widespread because it’s nothing out of the norm. Members of the lawsuit say that it only seems to be affecting poorer schools with greater numbers of racial minorities.
- Off to prison. William “Boots” Del Biaggio, who used to own a little over a quarter of the Preds franchise, was finally sentenced to 8 years in jail and ordered to pay back the nearly $70 million that he defrauded lenders.
- Drama! The owners of the Redneck Yacht Club are suing the writers of Redneck Yacht Club, a song performed by Craig Morgan. Not that this is significant in any way, but sometimes the redneck drama is too good to pass up.
- Bits & pieces. East Nashvillians are still trying to fire their councilwoman … A property management company is laying claim on at least part of Steve McNair’s estate, saying he owes money on another condo near Centennial Park … 97% of all flu cases diagnosed in Tennessee so far this season have been H1N1 … Metro is now assisting families who can’t afford the burial costs of their relatives.

9/9/09 Is A Magical Baja Burrito Birthday [Freebies]
Oh, happy day. After having our fill of fast food freebies, our hometown staple Baja Burrito is turning nine years old on today, the ninth day of the ninth month of the two-thousandth-and-ninth year. Happy Birthday to Baja Burrito! To celebrate, they’re giving away food. For free. We’ve always had quite the love affair with Baja Burrito, and we’d gladly pay the eight bucks for one of their burritos… But if you know us, you know we won’t be refusing any free food today!
Baja Burrito is open from 11am-9pm today, and the free food is available on a first come, first served basis. Drinks, queso (appetizers) and paletas are not included, but the real food is fair game. If you stop by early in the day, report back on the lines and availability.
[Thanks to... oh, just about everyone for the tip.] Photo via LikeMe.net.

Happy Hour: Edible What?
- Councilman Charlie Tygard is all about advancing the “Edible Schoolyard” concept, wherein a community garden of sorts is run by students and incorporated into the academic curriculum. Next up: Schoolyard Urban Chicken Coops. [City Paper]
- Hey look, Bigfoot showed up in someone’s backyard in Kentucky! And they took a picture of it! Also, obligatory. [WSMV]
- A new federal report is showing that there are more than 600 coal ash storage sites in 35 states around the US much like the one that collapsed in Kingston. According to the report, 34 of them have spilled at one point or another, though none quite as detrimental as the TVA’s. [WTVF]
- We win awards with our anti-litter campaigns. [WSMV]
- Abercrombie & Fitch is being sued after a 16-year old customer claimed that one of the A&F employees at Rivergate Mall tried to film her undressing in the dressing room. [Nashville Post]
- Councilman Sam Coleman wants to amend Davidson County’s guns in parks ban to apply only to specific parks. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: Things That Make Us Happy Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Our Hard Rock Cafe will be shutting down for a few weeks for a complete overhaul of the building’s interior, which is cool and all, but here’s the really neat part: While they’re closed, they’ll be putting their employees to good use by paying them to help the community. During this time, they’ll be working for several different charitable organizations around town including Habitat for Humanity, Musicians on Call, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Dierks Bentley Miles & Music for Kids. We love people with good ideas and we love good ideas that make Nashville a better place, so thanks Hard Rock!
- Good news for Contributor. And speaking of good ideas, over the weekend we saw Nashville’s own street paper, the Contributor, on the front page of the Tennessean. The paper, published and sold by Nashville’s homeless, has received national recognition in recent weeks.
- Barry’s big day. Today is the day that President Obama will address the nation’s school kids about staying in school and being successful, except for all the kids and schools in Tennessee who have opted out. Metro Schools finally laid down the law on Friday, giving individual classrooms the right to make their own decisions about whether or not they’ll view it.
- Bits & pieces. There’s some weird new musical instrument that is “part boogie board, part piano and part guitar” that its creators hope catches on in Nashville … Nashville’s DUI cases are really stacking up … Apparently some folks in Brentwood are “fuming” about those pesky sign-twirlers … The lake water at Centennial Park maybe won’t kill us after all.

Happy Hour: Here A Duck, There A Duck
- We’re less than a week out from Nashville’s Twestival Local and we’re only eight ducks away from meeting our goal of 100 duck adoptions this week! If you can help us out (and our friends at Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle TN!) and want to join our team, check out Twestival Nashville for some important instructions. Go team!
- Franklin residents were finally able complain out loud about that awful-smelling manufacturing plant that keeps smelling up their town. Over 100 people came out to the hearing last night. [Tennessean]
- The Mayor of Clarksville forwarded an unfortunate email around to the city council and other city officials asking them to protest a “new” Muslim stamp that the email claims was commissioned by President Obama. Trouble is, the stamp has actually been around since 2001 and simply commemorates some important Muslim holy days. When pressed, he said he didn’t see anything wrong with it. [Tennessean]
- WPLN, Nashville’s NPR station, unveiled its new plan to drop the classical music programming during the day in favor of more talk radio and news content. Great news for the talk radio fans, sad day for the classical music lovers. [WSMV]
- Mayor Dean has finally nominated a for-real convention center authority to oversee the project as it moves forward and hopefully not let contracts get quite as far out of control. [WPLN]
