Good morning, Nashville. Metro Nashville Public Schools released enrollment data this week that demonstrated that their rezoning plan, which has drawn quite a bit of fire from civil rights groups like the NAACP, has actually reduced the number of single-minority schools in the system. The overarching complaint about the changes has been that it promoted racial segregation because students were rezoned to schools near their homes, and that schools with poorer kids in poorer neighborhoods were skimping on resources such as textbooks. Armed with the new data, MNPS hopes to defend the decision against further accusations.
- WHY. Our morning Teneessee facepalm moment comes to us from Memphis, where interim mayor Myron Lowery welcomed the Dalai Lama to town with a fist bump and a hearty “Hello, Dalai!” When the Dalai Lama was understandably a little confused, Lowery showed him what to do with a fist bump and also noted that he’d been wanting to say “Hello, Dalai” to the Dalai Lama all his life.
- Titans lawsuit. Ex-Titan David Givens is suing the team franchise for at least $25 million after accusing them of playing him despite a “horribly damaged knee,” which he claims they never even told him about. The resulting injury presumably cost him his career.
- Bits & pieces. Someone painted over all of the black faces on the Jefferson Street Civil Rights mural overnight … Police are on the lookout for a guy who stole a giant video camera from the Wildhorse Saloon, and fortunately the entire theft was caught on tape … The new Hummer HQ isn’t headed to middle Tennessee after all … Unemployment benefits may be extended again, which would help tens of thousands of jobless Tennesseans.
