Nashville Newcomers: Nuvo Burrito

When we did our Battle of the Burritos a few months ago, we had no idea that another contender was set to enter the market, and in a space painfully devoid of burritos at that. Enter Nuvo Burrito, tucked into the old Z’s Deli space in East Nashville’s Five Points, and now soft-opened to the public.

We dropped in last night to see if Nuvo is the answer to East Nashville’s burrito needs. When we marched in 20 minutes before they were set to close for the evening, we were astonished at the amount of people inside. At least a dozen customers were ordering or seated, which gave us plenty of time to take in the overwhelming menus displayed on two large flatscreen TVs. Burritos range in price from $6.99 – $8.99, chips & salsa will ding you $2.50, and there’s no queso to be found on the menu, much to our chagrin. Nuvo Burrito also offers an impressive selection of quesadillas on the menu, though you wouldn’t guess it by their name. Both burritos and quesadillas are filled with unique, fresh ingredients – We’re talking spinach, artichoke, hearty brown grains, black beans, cilantro pesto, sweet potatoes, cajun shrimp, bacon bits, caramelized onions and more.

Despite costing over $10 for a meal (with chips and drinks), our burritos were worth the cost. Our vegetarian burrito was served in a bright green spinach tortilla and loaded to the brim with fillings, and our “Gulf Coaster” was equally as satisfying. Many of Nuvo’s burrito concepts stray so far from the traditional burrito that at times, it may be best to consider it a giant, warm gourmet wrap. Not that we’re complaining about that.

We’d petition for a salsa bar, queso dip and some fresh, warm chips if we were going to complain about something. Other than that, Nuvo Burrito has entered the East Nashville market with a bang, with neighborhood residents already pouring through their doors every day. The four owners are so excited about making creative burritos that it’s hard to imagine their concept doing poorly. We were excitedly told about plans to offer a “Guest Burrito Of The Day,” some special tomato-y offerings for their grand opening at the Tomato Art Fest, and plans for additional chain locations. Nuvo Burrito is (for now) open 11am-8pm every day, so show ‘em some love. Welcome to town, Nuvo!

UPDATE: Nuvo Burrito has launched their website, which includes a pdf of their menu for the curious. Click here to visit NuvoBurrito.com!

Happy Hour: Here We Go Again

Bright & Early: Oh, What A Beautiful Morning Edition

Good morning, Nashville. So how about that weather this weekend? Yesterday’s high of 77 actually broke the coolest-day-in-July record of 79 degrees set in 1897. Sunday morning’s low of 57 tied the record low set in 1979. We’re not exactly sure what’s going on with this, but we hope it sticks around for a few more days. We’re also not exactly sure what’s going on with WKRN’s weather guy, but we hope that sticks around for a few more days too because we appreciate the LOLs.

Happy Hour: Caught Red-Handed

Photo Of The Day: July 17, 2009 [Feel Good Friday]

Sometimes we’ve gotta hand it to the tourists who end up finding more weird things about Tennessee than we ever will. Photographer jritch77 found this giant pink elephant in a bikini in Cookeville on the way to Nashville. Happy Friday!

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: Not-So-Clean Coal Edition

Good morning, Nashville. More trouble is on the horizon for the TVA after they reassessed several coal ash storage sites and found the hazard potential for four of the sites to be high. Two of the hazardous storage facilities are in East Tennessee and the other two are in Alabama, including the Widows Creek fossil plant that already overflowed earlier this year. A high hazard potential isn’t based on a probability of failure, but rather a high potential for loss of human life in the event of a spill.

Happy Hour: What A Creep

  • Our fancy new gun laws are turning some heads around the country, most importantly the handsome head of Stephen Colbert. [Eric Shuff]
  • The guy who was arrested in McMinn County for wandering around with 40 pairs of panties shoved in his pants is–get this–embarrassed! That’s right, he took two days off of work because he was so embarrassed. He even ended up being featured on whatacreep.com which we did not know existed until just now. Anyway, he explained that it was just a drunken prank and he was going to return the panties in the morning by tossing them in the owner’s tree. Of course. [Tennessean]
  • No matter what you hear, Al Gore’s daughter is not running for Congress. [In Session]
  • Tennessee’s unemployment rate only rose 0.1% in June to 10.8%. Maybe we’re leveling off? [WTVF]
  • We had a pretty close call today when a mobile home got stuck underneath the 12th Ave. South overpass that crosses I-40. We’re starting to notice a trend. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: What’s In A Signature Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Do you remember the Signature Tower, that 70-story pencil-shaped skyscraper that was supposed to be built at 5th and Church and would’ve been the tallest building in the southeast and almost double the height of the Batman building? The project seemed to hit at just the wrong time as the economy was tanking and people were quickly losing interest in swanky-but-expensive condos, and now the developers aren’t paying their loans. According to an independent audit, the developer’s financial partner is in some pretty deep financial trouble and we’re guessing we won’t be seeing that building any time soon.

  • Tennessee’s first swine flu H1N1 virus death was confirmed today at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which has officials preparing for a second outbreak this coming flu season. [WKRN]
  • WSMV jumps at the chance to slam the Nashville Scene in their headline about the classy Green Hills lady arrested today for running a “massage therapy business,” wink wink nudge nudge. Apparently, she ran some print ads in the Scene, and that is clearly the most newsworthy part about this story. Thanks, WSMV! [WSMV]

Thursday Night Throwdown: July’s Latte Art Competition

Nashville’s second ‘Thursday Night Throwdown,” a latte art competition that has come hither via our neighbors in Atlanta, will take place this Thursday evening. The inaugural Thursday Night Throwdown back in May was a smashing success, with 21 baristas, their friends, family, curious onlookers and a slew of photographers packing out Ugly Mugs to overflowing. This month, in a quest for more space and a change of scenery, Edgehill Studios Cafe will be playing host to the competition. TNT is free and open to the public, and latte artists pay a $5 entry fee toward a cash pot that is awarded to the winner. Registration begins at 7pm and the competition starts at 8pm [more info].

Needing an extra nudge out the door? This month’s Throwdown coincides with Edgehill Village’s Third Thursday block party, with live music, food and fun at many of the shops clustered at Edgehill and Villa. Wander around and browse, then head over to the cafe to watch some talented coffee slingers. We had a blast last time, so come join us this time around!
