Good morning, Nashville. It’s been almost a month since the texting while driving ban went into effect, and so far we’re hearing two things: Not many citations have been issued and law enforcement officers have no idea how to enforce it. Sheriff’s deputies in Montgomery County are particularly confused about how they’re supposed to tell the difference between texting and, say, dialing a phone number. Metro PD takes a slightly more draconian approach, maintaining that “Ultimately, if the officer decides that you were [texting while driving] you’re going to receive a citation,” and “if drivers want to dispute the ticket, that’s what the court system is for.” We suppose that time will tell.
- Poor choices. A woman was found stabbed around 4am this morning behind Ken’s Sushi in Midtown. Police suspect she was trying to rob the place and an employee went after her with a knife. The woman is undergoing some surgery at Vanderbilt. Moral of the story: Do not try to mess with Ken’s Sushi.
- At least he’s consistent. The non-discrimination ordinance passed its first reading in the Metro Council last night. Among the nay-sayers was Eric Crafton, who has requested a definition of “sexual orientation” along with some stats on discrimination complaints filed by Metro employees.
- Bits & pieces. Nashville West is getting a Buffalo Wild Wings! … Recession and gas prices be damned, Middle Tennesseans still love their SUVs and giant trucks … Murfreesboro is starting to think that those red light cameras are causing more harm than good.
