Bright & Early: Shoot ‘Em Up Edition

Good morning, Nashville. As we mentioned yesterday, Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Brentwood, Williamson County and Goodlettsville have all opted out of the new state law that allows guns in public parks. Nashville’s Metro Council will be taking a look at its own opt-out ordinance at tonight’s meeting, or maybe not, because some council members are looking to defer it for a month. Another councilman wants to revise it so that guns are only allowed “from one hour before sunset until closing” and “on any greenways, nature trails or natural areas — or en route to or from those places.” Also on the agenda for tonight’s council meeting is that controversial non-discrimination ordinance. Should be a long night.
- Crazy video alert. It’s a stretch to connect this to Tennessee, but it’s pretty incredible anyway: A family that moved from East Tennessee to Milwaukee got into a fiery car crash and all escaped with the help of some pretty ballsy strangers–and the entire thing was caught on video and Youtube’d. Poor quality aside, it will probably blow your mind.
- Oh, Canada. Our neighbors to the north are doing their part to battle Tennessee’s unemployment rate. A Canadian lighting manufacturer is opening a plant in Rutherford County that will bring 250 jobs at first with the hope that it’ll soon grow to around 2,000.
- Bits & pieces. Don’t let the bed bugs bite … Dividing up Steve McNair’s estate seems to be getting more complicated by the day … Yay, gas prices are going down! … Temperatures this morning broke the record low set in 1877.
A year ago on Nashvillest: We sweated through the hottest day of the year, discovered Craigslist’s haiku section, checked out the Music City Brewer’s Festival, and wondered why Texas was trying to kill us.
