The Gulch Is Cool, But Don’t Bike There [Mixed Reviews By People Who Don't Live Here]

Nashville’s latest ranking comes from Men’s Journal, and we guess we’ll forgive them for using the abbreviation “nabes” (neighborhoods) because they included our very own Gulch among the Best Neighborhoods In America (Southeast). The Gulch has a lot going for them right now, with the recent addition of Urban Flats, Cantina Laredo, Urban Outfitters, and the coming-soon Nashville Clothing Company and The Wine Loft.
In other less favorable news, Tennessee dropped a few spots from last year’s 36th place in the 2009 Bicycle Friendly States rankings, to 43rd place. On the bright side, there’s not much lower we can drop next year!
And finally, some news that’s like music to our ears, the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro metropolitan area was ranked 5th out of 366 metropolitan areas in the country for economic strength.
Editor’s note: There is actually nothing wrong with biking to the Gulch.

Bright & Early: CMApocalypse Now Edition
Good morning, Nashville. CMApocalypse is really sneaking up on us this year, and we’d almost forgotten about it until we saw the news this morning that more than 40,000 rabid country music fans are expected to descend upon our fair city for the festival next weekend and 30,000 of them are expected to be filling up the hotels downtown. How fast can we plan a weekend getaway, right? Okay, we kid; Nashville wouldn’t be Nashville without the tourists, and heck, we welcome any excuse to bust out the CMApocalypse bingo (feel free to make your own and send them our way!) Either way, keep an ear to Nashvillest over the next couple of days and we’ll do our best to get you through it.
- Strung along. Vince Young is tired of sitting on the bench and being upstaged by crooning quarterback Kerry Collins, and he’s sending a loud message to the Titans that he either wants to be in the game or peace out. Coach Fisher insists that VY® will eventually be the starter but that Collins will most likely start 2009.
- Getting nasty in Green Hills. The Green Hills Mall parking garage is becoming quite the hotbed for violent crime in Nashville, the latest installment being the 18-year old kid who was mugged and then stuffed into the trunk of his car while waiting for AAA yesterday afternoon, in broad daylight.
- Bits & pieces. We’re not sure we’ve ever seen a car booted in Nashville, but thanks to a new city law, Metro police are the only ones who can do it now … A Hume-Fogg senior is stepping up in defense of the ACLU’s lawsuit against Metro schools for blocking GLBT websites on school computers … A US Senate committee has set a June 16 hearing to investigate the whole “Oops, we just infected some patients with HIV and Hepatitis” situation with the VA hospitals around here.
A year ago on Nashvillest: We battened down the hatches for the start of the CMA fest invasion, scratched our heads at the thought of An Inconvenient Truth: The Opera, and won some awards with our urinals.

Tonight: Free Root Beer Float Night At Sonic [Freebies]

Why can’t it be 8pm right now?! Tonight from 8pm-midnight, Sonic Drive-in’s are handing out free small root beer floats. If we remember correctly, many Sonics actually ran out of ice cream last year. We have many fond summer memories of midnight Sonic root beer float runs, and we’ll be there tonight when the clock strikes 8.
Here’s a tip – The Sonic on 8th Ave S has recently remodeled and added a new set of drive-in stalls, which means they should have enough room to accommodate the float rush.

Happy Hour: When The Rich Get Richer
- Few things make us happier than the opportunity to rag on everyone’s favorite neighbor John Rich, who got kicked out of Cafe Coco last night around 3am. We won’t ruin the story for you except to say that it involved a powder blue Cadillac, the Star Spangled Banner, and a broken beer bottle. And the best part is that some blessed soul caught it on video. [Music City TV]
- We heard that about 20 square feet of Nashville experienced hail and nasty storms today. The rest of us see bright blue skies and sort of don’t believe you. [Nashville WX]
- Tonight is when the epic Metro Council vote is taking place to approve (or not!) the land purchase for the new Music City Center. If you’re super-bored and want to see it all go down, turn on Channel 3 around 6:30pm. [WKRN]
- Nothing says “our priority is public safety” like the headline, “Police Face Bullet Shortage.” We wonder how many melted-down Hummers would it take to remedy this situation. [WSMV]
- If you live in Franklin, you’ll want to keep an eye on those fancy GPS systems of yours. [City Paper]

The Tennessean’s Toast Of Music City Is Back For Another Crispy Year
Remember last year’s Toast Of Music City? If not, let us refresh your memory. The Tennessean’s readers voted Shoney’s, Golden Corral and Olive Garden as some of the top spots to grab a bite to eat, and Nashvillest readers were mortally offended. And so we’re begging you: Get over there and make things turn out right this year!
Toast of Music City is the Tennessean’s annual Reader’s Choice Awards, and to be fair, the site and voting is greatly improved, and the 105 categories appear to be more Scene-esque than ever! To that point, there’s an, ahem, Best Local Blog category. We think you know the right thing to do…

Bright & Early: Haters To The Left Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We’ve been hearing a lot about all the state budget cuts (and local budget cuts, and school budget cuts…), but Governor Phil doesn’t exactly inspire much confidence by asserting that “it’s not like we’re slashing state government into ribbons,” and inviting us all to “blame it all on Bredesen” before we’ve even had time to assess the damage. Or even his statement to all the haters: “Fine, if you want a different revenue source — or if you want to cut something else somewhere — I’ve given you a budget, process it. If you want to change it, change it.” We’ll spare you the gory details, but you can read about some of the worst of the cuts over here.
- Magical thinking. Spring Hill GM workers are trying to stay positive about yesterday’s announcement that the plant will be idling indefinitely before the end of the year, noting that at least they’re not closing for good yet, at least they might have a new product to make (the non-SUV), and it could’ve been worse.
- Tut tut, looks like rain. Nashville racked up a soggy 8.45 inches of rain during the month of May, making it the wettest month since September 2003. And don’t be fooled by the blue skies today, either–we may be in for a stormy afternoon.
- Bits & pieces. Metro PD managed to snag 43 people who were driving under the influence last weekend, which is actually more than they caught on Memorial Day weekend … A suspicious liquid showed up in the lobby of a West End synagogue yesterday evening … June is Dairy Month and we’re still sort of bitter that milk is now our official state beverage … An audit revealed that some state funding was used by the Commission for Children and Youth to buy booze for a legislative reception.

Happy Hour: It’s All About GM
- Let’s start with the good news, since this is Happy Hour: Though Tennessee’s unemployment rate almost hit 10% last month, Williamson County had a net gain of 800 jobs. [WKRN]
- Lamar Alexander says “There is no reason why the new GM cannot build cars and trucks at Spring Hill” and he doesn’t expect the GM plant to be closed for long. Remind us to check back on this in a few months. [Nashville Post]
- The Chevy Traverse, which is the huge-ass SUV currently being produced in Spring Hill, is moving to another plant. There is still the hope that Spring Hill can remain in the running for the “new small car,” which might salvage the plant. [Tennessean]
- Many folks in Columbia, Franklin, Maury County and Williamson County are worried about all the tax revenue they’ll lose from the probably-soon-to-be-unemployed Spring Hill workers. [WKRN]
- Not GM-related, but not exactly happy: One of the veterans who tested positive for HIV as a result of contaminated equipment at the VA hospital is finally speaking out. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Ghost Town Edition
Good morning, Nashville. After a long weekend of waiting, the 2,500 employees at the Spring Hill GM plant were told this morning that the plant will be halting production indefinitely as a part of the company’s restructuring. GM filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this morning, and although that probably doesn’t come as much of a shock to anyone, we’re having a tough time imagining how much losing that many jobs will affect that community. Not the best way to kick off the week, eh?
- Really? In the neverending saga of the TVA and its toxic ash, all the controversy of the past few months has caused folks to question whether the recycled ash that has been donated to schools and parks is actually leeching arsenic and all sorts of fun chemicals into the ground.
- ‘Tis the season. The Summer of Smog is officially underway with the season’s first Air Quality Alert: “Temperatures are expected to soar toward 90 and the sun beats down on the city, creating a haze of exhaust fumes and chemicals that can be unhealthy for people with asthma, lung disease and heart problems, as well as children and the elderly.”
- Bits & pieces. The new(ish) paid parking lot behind Pancake Pantry is making everyone angry, so please remember that the parking people are generous folks … Nashville has a brand new Smart Car store that opens today … Governor Phil is having an “emotional and exhausting” time making all of the budget cuts … Unless biting into metal is your thing, watch out for the recalled ground beef.
