Happy Hour: Pretty In Green

  • With the minor internet explosion surrounding the Iran election, Nashville is having its own Show of Solidarity with the Iranian People, much like the one happening tonight in New York City, tomorrow Friday night at Centennial Park. [Facebook]
  • VY™ basically spilled his guts on ESPN today about last September’s meltdown. [City Paper]
  • Hey, if you live or work in Franklin, tomorrow’s the Free Public Transportation Day. Though we often forget Franklin has a public transportation system, give it a whirl and let us know how it is. [WSMV]
  • It was a super-dramatic day in the Department of Offensive Email Forwards From People Who May Work For The State And Probably Shouldn’t Be Forwarding Offensive Emails. [Pith In The Wind]
  • On a related note, the Tennessee Ethics Commission’s future is still looking pretty grim. [WTVF]
  • New Public Art Alert: Our city is about to become home to eight giant shiny brass buffalo statues. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: An Apple A Day Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Several members of Congress are a little less than pleased with VA officials after yesterday’s testimony in which officials admitted that their hospitals still aren’t following proper procedures for cleaning medical equipment. You may remember that the problems were first uncovered Alvin C. York Medical Center in Murfreesboro in December 2008 and other facilities in January 2009. Six months and dozens of cases of Hepatitis and HIV later, many of the facilities can’t demonstrate that they’ve even trained their staff on how to clean the equipment correctly.

A year ago on Nashvillest: We wondered if shelling out $3 million in tax incentives for the Hannah Montana movie was a good idea, read a silly poem by our favorite weatherman Tim Ross, laughed at a dog driving around in a picture frame, and learned that our tap water probably won’t kill us.

Happy Hour: Swim Trunks & Flippy Floppies

  • If you like what you see in the above photograph, don’t forget that the CMT awards come on at 7pm and Taylor Swift is probably performing with T-Pain within the first 5-10 minutes. Someone send us the Youtube later please? [Tennessean]
  • The Tennessee Senate nixed the Al Gore statue idea and we can’t say we’re extremely upset. [In Session]
  • The Republican staffer whose name has now been plastered all across the internet for sending out a super-racist email from a state computer has issued an apology. [Nashville Is Talking]
  • And also, some storms came through today and knocked out power for about 11,000 of you. [Tennessean]
  • The folks cleaning up Bonnaroo found the body of a 20-something male inside of a tent on the campgrounds. [WKRN]

Photo Of The Day: June 16, 2009

Flickr user Fallingwater123 spotted this lone rose hanging on the handle of the Acklen mausoleum in the Mount Olivet Cemetery. Eerie capture, but we love the color contrast.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Very Ugly Painting For Sale [Gems From The Nashville Craigslist]

There’s really nothing like a Craigslist straight-shooter with a sense of humor! Thanks to Shana for the submission!

Very ugly painting for sale – $75 (Columbia)

I should believe in the things I put on Craigslist, but please I am not blind. You see this crap style and wonder, what kind of moron would pay $500.00 for this. Well not me, I bought it from a furniture store going out of business because my ex wife took everything and I thought the art work at Big Lots was to uppity. Why is it $75.00 you ask? The frame is well worth that + another $75. This picture is magic for a single guy, lets say you are kicking it in the club, the produce section, the Y, or anywhere else that you score. You scored and you want the lady to leave, you want to watch TV, you do not want to cuddle, talk, or even tap it again you just want to be left alone. Start talking about how this painting moves you and that the artist must be expressing the pain of a bad economy, lack of health care, or many other things that harm our existence. Start talking about how this artist is daring and that this painting will be worth a fortune one day. She will leave fast, I mean real fast. Also who ever keeps flagging this for removal stop! I am not offering to kill anyone, advertise erotic services, run over an unwanted stray animal, or offer a typing job from home that pays $3,500 a week for 10 hours work. I am selling an ugly painting that had benefit in my life and it may hold the same benefit for someone else. Unless of course you were dumb enough to fall for pick up lines that occur at the Y, the produce section, or the club and then told to leave and this brings up to many painful memories there is this arrow that points to the left on your web browser that will navigate you away from this page. Trust me, it works!

Bright & Early: The Recession Lives On Edition

Good morning, Nashville. As part of a last-ditch effort to salvage some jobs within Metro, the city council will be going back over some budget revisions tonight that will hopefully save 17 positions. In order to come up with the extra money, the proposed amendments would shave off some funds from the Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as pulling some additional money from the rainy day fund. And apparently this is the first time in Metro’s history that this year’s budget is actually less than last year’s.

A year ago on Nashvillest: Checked out one of the best ways in town to not get a DUI (or worse?), hugged our Sounds, dreamed of free root beer floats, busted some not-so-bright criminals on Craigslist, and braced ourselves for the Bible theme park.

Happy Hour: The Aftermath

  • We love Bonnaroo and everything, but we’re really really glad we’re not the ones cleaning it up. [WKRN]
  • Speaking of Bonnaroo, it almost sold out this year and CMA festival attendance was up 7.2%. [Tennessean]
  • Weirdly enough, the Metro Planning Department is recommending that the planning commission approve the May Town Center proposal which would create a “second downtown” in the Bells Bend area. Along with the recommendation, they’ve included about 48 pages of conditions for the approval and we’re too lazy to sift through them. [In Session]
  • The Nicaraguan government called, and they want Eric Volz back. Eric was locked up in a Nicaraguan prison for more than a year for murdering his girlfriend despite glaring evidence that he wasn’t even in the same city at the time. Now he having to file an emergency petition against their government. [WSMV]
  • And we can’t believe we forgot to mention this story this morning, but the KKK has been tossing literature in people’s driveways in Green Hills. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: We’ve Got Issues Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Over the past few months, we’ve been following the story of three VA hospitals, including one in Murfreesboro, that may have infected dozens of veterans with HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C through the use of contaminated medical equipment. VA officials are slated to testify at a congressional hearing in DC in hopes of finding out who was responsible for the mistake. As many as 10,000 veterans have been advised to get tested for the diseases and 6 ended up testing positive for HIV, 16 for Hepatitis B, and 34 for Hepatitis C. Though some folks are saying that the veterans likely had the diseases before the contamination, Congress isn’t quite convinced.

A year ago on Nashvillest: We poked fun at some Metro Council members who took a dip in the Cumberland to prove that it’s really not that nasty, tried to fend off the first of several state coups of our school system, took a trip to the Nashville Farmer’s Market, and wondered how Titans wide receiver Brandon Jones managed to accidentally bring a gun to the airport.

Happy Hour: The Digital Age Is Upon Us

  • After tonight, analog television is no more. If you’re still not sure whether or not this affects you, check the above flowchart from our friends at the Consumerist. [Consumerist]
  • GM appears to be holding the Spring Hill plant for ransom to the tune of $200 million. Says Governor Phil: “The numbers that they were talking about are well outside of what I think we can do today, in terms of with the budget situation we have. That’s not something we’ve traditionally done and I don’t need to tell you, given the conversation we’ve just been having, this is not a year in which I’ve got a spare couple hundred million dollars lying around in the rainy day fund for something like this.” [WKRN]
  • Oh hey, another drug bust en route to Bonnaroo. What is this world coming to?  [WSMV]
  • The CMA Fest is still going on, so please remember that a bunch of roads will be closed downtown this weekend. If you don’t plan around them, you’ll probably regret it. [WKRN]
  • The assistant principal at Jere Baxter Middle School was shot last night after an argument, didn’t realize it, and died after crashing into another car. [WSMV]
  • Sen. Barbara Boxer, who declared the Kingston TVA ash spill to be 100 times worse than Exxon-Valdez, is trying to get the Department of Homeland Security to disclose other coal ash dump sites across the country. Their answer? They can’t, because the materials stored inside are dangerous enough to pose a security threat if the wrong folks were to tamper with them (Thanks to Justin C. for the tip!) [Huffington Post]

Is Martin’s The Who’s Who Of Barbecue? [You Tell Us]

It's a BBQ Battle! What's the best BBQ around?

Patrick Martin of Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint out in Nolensville is getting all famous, what with having his restaurant featured in Bon Appetit as one of the Top 10 New Barbecue Restaurants in the nation, and heading out to New York City to be a Pitmaster at the Big Apple BBQ this weekend, and getting interviewed and stuff. Martin’s loyalists are a loud bunch, but we’re sort of lazy and hate driving out to Nolensville, so what’s a barbecue fan to do?

Tell us, Nashville. What’s the best barbecue in the area?

Editor’s note: We don’t care if the best place is in Memphis. Really. If Nolensville is too far, you might imagine that we’re not going to drive to Memphis to eat, but we do appreciate your enthusiasm.
