Happy Hour: Hot Hot Heat
- We break records with our heat: Yesterday’s low of 79 was the highest low recorded for Nashville on June 21st, ever. [WKRN]
- Trying to work out some extra space for dangerous criminals, the federal government is laying down the mandate that they won’t be housing anymore undocumented immigrants who are caught driving without a license, which is how many of them are detained in Nashville as a part of the 287(g) program. [Tennessean]
- For the many hundreds, if not thousands, of you who were stuck in traffic on I-40, we send you our sympathies. It’s not every day that a house gets wedged underneath an overpass. [WKRN]
- In case you missed your shot at being an extra in Hank Williams Jr.’s Monday Night Football video, fear not: They also need 500 more extras at the Parthenon tomorrow night from 7pm-2am. [Tennessean]
- McGavock High School is missing around $40,000 from the concession stand according to the latest audit. [City Paper]
- If your kids go to Ashland City Elementary in Cheatham County, you may want to start issuing gas masks sooner rather than later. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: How To Start A Fire Edition
Good morning, Nashville. An investigation is underway after a mysterious fire started outside of the Women’s Clinic in south Nashville, which provides medical and surgical abortions. Though there was no significant damage, it did start immediately after a protest, leading people to think it could’ve been arson. The FBI is helping out with the investigation.
- Apropos of nothing, but good for a Monday morning chuckle: “Burpless cows better for the environment, dairy farmers hope,” and “Farmers fear cow tax for livestock belches.“
- Smyrna is probably going to be the proud recipient of Nissan’s new electric car manufacturing, which could mean lots and lots of jobs. And Nissan is probably not going to be a jerk like GM and make our state shell out $200 million for it.
- Bits & pieces. Another year, another successful Pride festival … Glory hallelujah, the legislative session is finally over … BREAKING: TVA ash spill cleanup in Tennessee moves slow … Iranian-Americans got together at Centennial on Sunday to show their support for Iranian protests.

Happy Hour: On Buffalos And John Rich
- Under that mysterious black sheet is one of the eight new giant buffalo sculptures now adorning Dickerson Road. From WSMV: “A lot of people had fun with the buffalo theme by wearing T-shirts, welcoming the herd.” This will never get any less funny. [WSMV]
- Quote of the day: “One thing about the music business, country music business in particular, is, you know, as long as you’re not a child rapist or gay, you can get away with a lot … You know what I mean?” – John Rich’s manager in an alleged attempt to pay off Jared Ashley to drop the harassment lawsuit. Charming, right? [WSMV]
- Our city has a new slogan! “Nashville: Where Innovation Sings.” [WSMV]
- Sen. Diane Black made Keith Olbermann’s list of World’s Worst People after her staffer sent out that racist email. [In Session]
- There was some sort of intense fugitive chase down 8th Ave. today and it doesn’t sound like they actually caught the guy. [WSMV]

Because We Really, Really Need More Burritos: Chipotle & Chuy’s Updates

What do Chipotle and Chuy’s have in common? Without getting into a debate about burritos and Tex-Mex and what really is or isn’t Mexican food, they share a common bond of some very, very enthusiastic fans. And those very, very enthusiastic fans should be excited to hear these updates.
Chipotle has a nice new shiny building permit at 2825 West End Ave, which an astute reader pointed out is the current home of Bittner’s Formal Wear. We went ahead and gave Bittner’s a call, and it is indeed true – They are moving across the parking lot, and Chipotle is taking their place. We hope this means that we could see Chipotle opening their doors before the end of the year, but we’ll have to wait for the official word.
Chuy’s will start renovating Cool Springs’ old Beethoven’s Grille in July, and they plan to be open by a vague “Fall.” Which is sooner than “Winter,” so I guess we’ll take it. If you can’t wait until then, Chuy’s is a sponsor of the 2009 Carnton Plantation Summer Concert Series, and while there won’t be any creamy jalapeño at the plantation, there will be plenty of Chuy’s margaritas to go around.

Bright & Early: Nashville Lovin’ Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Last night was a great night for all the Preds fans out there with Steve Sullivan taking home the Bill Masterton trophy for dedication, sportsmanship, and perseverence. Sully made quite a comeback this year after missing two years because of a back injury that required two separate surgeries, racking up 32 points in 41 games this season. Though his future with the Preds is still up in the air right now, at least we know he loves us: “From the moment I got there, I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Nashville. … I can’t see us selling our house. We’re definitely going to retire there. I’m hoping I can retire there as a player also.” Aww.
- Guns in parks? They might not be able to keep guns out of bars around town, but the Metro Council is still trying to pass an ordinance keeping them out of our parks. Reactions to the effort have been a little mixed.
- Miss Tennessee. The Miss Tennessee pageant is well underway and for what it’s worth, Memphis and Hamilton County are cleaning up. As long as we don’t end up with something like this, we don’t really care who takes home the tiara.
- Bits & pieces. Things might be looking up for the folks in Perry County … Friends don’t let friends leave puppies/kids/aging parents in hot cars … In which a 12-year old robs a liquor store … I-40 West is going to be closed this weekend, so plan accordingly … Police have now identified the body they found during Bonnaroo cleanup.
A year ago on Nashvillest: We were depressed about the “sky-high” unemployment rate of 6.4% (it’s 10.7% right now, by the way), gave a warm welcome to Cool Springs’ brand new Whole Foods, threw in our guesses for Veepstakes, and freaked out some folks in Hillsboro Village with the June Freeze.

Happy Hour: Drink Up, Me ‘Earties, Yo Ho
- Well, Tennessee’s unemployment rate is now 10.7%, which is the highest it’s been since November 1983. Beer us, please. [WSMV]
- In an effort not to see that rate skyrocket in the coming months, Governor Phil put in the bid to GM in hopes that they’ll bring the manufacturing of that new car to the Spring Hill plant. We aren’t extremely optimistic since they wanted at least $200 million up front and our state is broke. [Tennessean]
- The Convention & Visitors Bureau has already book 21 events at the new convention center and it hasn’t even been built yet. [WSMV]
- What Would Judge Judy Do: “According to the arrest affidavit, [John] Rich then left a voicemail for [Jared] Ashley in the early morning hours after the incident. In the voicemail, Rich allegedly threatened to ‘knock the s—’ out of Ashley. The first alleged altercation between the two took place a year ago when Rich interrupted a performance by Ashley and allegedly said he ought to “take him into the alley and kick his ass.” Charming! [City Paper]
- Tickets for the Music City Star’s special July 4th train to the fireworks are selling like hotcakes! And by that we mean that there are 600 tickets left. [WSMV]
- “Streaming video of the zoo’s tiger cubs,” they said. Lies. [Tennessean]

Photo Of The Day: June 18, 2009
We’re never quite brave enough to hang out in the front yard with a camera during a thunderstorm, so we’re glad that folks like Chris1051 are. Chris caught this spidery cluster of lightning bolts over a neighbor’s house last night using a wide aperture and a 3-second exposure.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & (Not So) Early: The Way Of The Buffalo Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We’re running a little late this morning, so here’s your abbreviated Bright & Early:
- The big news from the Capitol this morning is that the House and Senate have agreed on a $29.6 million budget and sent it to Governor Phil for consideration. [WTVF]
- Pith peels back a few layers of the controversial May Town Center plan and gives a good rundown of what’s actually entailed in the construction of a “second downtown.” [Pith In The Wind]
- John Rich is going to court today and there is a mugshot! [WTVF]
- One day, we have faith that Vince Young will start making headlines for football again. [City Paper]
- We’ll find out pretty soon if Sully actually wins the NHL’s Masterton trophy for dedication and perseverance, and we realize we’re biased, but we think he totally deserves it. [City Paper]
- Kings of Leon are launching a record label, etc. [Post Business]
- Lots of lightning last night. [Nashville WX]
