Summer Must Be Here: Movies In The Park Are Back For 2009

Get excited – Movies In The Park are (almost) back! If you’ve lived in Nashville for at least a year, you’re probably familiar with the Nashville Scene’s Movies In The Park. It’s one of our favorite things about summer in Nashville, though it’s become so popular that it’s hard to find a spot to sit! This year’s Movies In The Park runs every Wednesday from May 27 (that’s next week!) through June 24, and we’re pretty excited for the films they’ve picked this year (don’t judge us).

May 27: Mamma Mia

June 3: Kung Fu Panda Cancelled and rescheduled for July 1

June 10: Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

June 17: Mean Girls Cancelled and rescheduled for July 8

June 24: Batman

July 1: Kung Fu Panda

July 8: Mean Girls

Movies are free, all ages (at parental discretion, of course) and start in Centennial Park on Wednesday evenings at sunset, which is usually around 7pm. Last year things got very crowded, so show up early with a blanket to stake out a good spot. We’ll see you there!

Bright & Early: Takes A Village Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Police are still looking for the suspect in Monday night’s fatal shooting at Maplewood High School’s graduation ceremony. Though they picked up a guy who matched the discription on Tuesday morning, he was released after questioning. They believe that the shooting was probably gang-related, and Metro School officials are saying that something like this was “kind of destined to happen” because we apparently have a pretty big gang problem here. Consequently, all area high schools are beefing up security at commencement ceremonies this month.

Happy Hour: But Seriously, Why Not Wine?

  • We’re creeping closer and closer to being able to (legally) cart lots of wine across the Tennessee border from other cooler states that actually allow it in grocery stores. [WZTV]
  • Jack In The Box is shelling out $20,000 to a white former employee who claims that her black coworkers called her a bunch of offensive racist names. [Tennessean]
  • The ACLU is for-real suing Metro Nashville Public Schools for blocking gay-themed websites after threatening to do it for a month. [Tennessean]
  • CMT Awards nominations are in with Brad Paisley, Sugarland, and Taylor Swift leading the pack. And much to our chagrin, it’s not being held at Belmont this year. [Tennessean]
  • Tennessee police may be able to start fingerprinting everyone they pull over. [WKRN]
  • One of the kids who beat and mugged a 62-year old man in the Green Hills Mall parking garage escaped from police custody last night near Hartsville. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: People Kill People Edition

Good morning, Nashville. A high school graduation downtown turned tragic when a gunman opened fire into the crowd of 4,000 people who were attending the ceremony. One person was killed and another injured by the gunfire, and another person was trampled by the crowd running out of the auditorium; none of them were graduates. The Maplewood High School commencement was being held at TSU’s Gentry Center and no one has figured out yet why the guy started shooting at people, though a suspect believed to be the shooter was picked up around 8:30 last night near Hadley Park.

Happy Hour: Buckle Up!

  • Today marks the beginning of Tennessee’s “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement campaign, which means there will be extra cops hanging out everywhere and actually looking for people who aren’t wearing their seat belts. So, click it unless you’re dying to be pulled over. [WSMV]
  • The stimulus money will soon be paying for Oak Ridge to pawn off all of its low-level nuclear waste onto Utah. [WZTV]
  • Rutherford County is the fastest-growing county in the state according to the latest census data. Who saw that one coming? [WSMV]
  • Metro has decided to bail out clean up a neighborhood that was only partly finished when its developer abandoned it a few years ago. They’re currently working on getting back about $400K from the developer to finish it up, build some roads, and clean up all of the nasty graffiti. [WKRN]
  • Experts say that gas prices shouldn’t go above $3 per gallon and we sure hope they’re right (lest you forget that pesky gas crisis we had one time.) [WKRN]
  • In case anyone’s keeping score, there have been 84 swine flu cases in Tennessee, half of which have been in Davidson County. [WSMV]

Photo Of The Day: May 18, 2009

We’re not sure where Flickr contributor urbanwoodchuck found this lonely-looking tile floor, but it seems to be missing something. Perhaps the rest of its building? But seriously, we’re big suckers for photos of urban decay, and this is one of the coolest displays we’ve seen around Nashville outside of the abandoned State Prison.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: Just Another Manic Monday Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We really love it when we can start off the week with some good news, like telling you that the TVA is doing something other than slinging toxic sludge all over our state and also some other states. They’re planning to lower our rates by another 4% starting July 1st, meaning that we’re at least getting a little closer to recovering from that 20% hike that they instituted back with we were shelling out $4 for gas. This round of cuts will shave an estimated $2-5 on the average person’s electricity bill. Hey, we’ll take what we can get.

Happy Hour: Life’s Not Fair

  • Well, the days of texting and driving (legally) are over. Or will be over on July 1 when the new law that Governor Phil signed today officially goes into effect. Funny thing is, the law will apply to everyone except for state/local AND CAMPUS law enforcement officers. What? [Tennessean]
  • July 1 might be a bad day because of that, but through a small miracle, the TVA is slashing our rates again that day by 4.1%. [WTVF]
  • After announcing the closing of a whole lot of Chrysler dealerships yesterday, GM came out with 1,100 more that will be shut down in October. [Tennessean]
  • As promised, Governor Phil trekked down to Perry County with their 25% unemployment rate and announced the creation of 300 new jobs today. [In Session]
  • The VA hospitals are unearthing even more medical equipment mistakes in addition to the ones that already infected a bunch of people with terrible diseases. [WZTV]

Texting & Driving Get A Divorce; What Do You Think? [Nashvillest Polls]

Hot on the heels of the news that Governor Phil has signed the bill banning texting while driving in Tennessee, most of us are having some pretty mixed feelings. What about Twitter/How will we kick the habit/Is there a patch for this addiction/Can we get away with making grocery lists on our cell phones while we’re driving/Oh noes!/it’stheendoftheworld! From the bill’s full text:

“No driver shall operate a motor vehicle on any highway while using a hand held mobile telephone or hand held personal digital assistant to transmit or read a written message while such vehicle is in motion; provided, that a driver does not transmit or read a written message for the purpose of this subsection

(b) if such driver reads, selects, or enters a telephone number or name in a hand held mobile or a personal digital assistant for the purpose of making or receiving a telephone call.”

So vent on us. Vote in the poll, then drop us a comment with your thoughts on the bill. Because we know you’ve got ‘em.
