Bright & Early: Cut Us Some Slack Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We hope that you enjoyed your long weekend as much as we did. From the looks of things, you were all at the movies, at Montgomery Bell State Park, at Percy Priest Lake, slacklining at Centennial Park at or at Loveless Cafe creating that 2-hour wait that we’re still bitter about. Looks like the staycation was totally in this year!

  • Oh, happy day. Mayor Karl Dean will be making a big announcement today at 1pm about the traffic madness in Green Hills. Is it possible that major improvements could be in store, even though Metro planners told residents earlier this year that remedying the situation would be impossible? We can only hope.
  • Summer break? J/K! Some 170+ students at McGavock High School have to go back to re-take their exams after violating the dress code on the last day of school. Students are indignant, their parents say they should have followed the rules and Principal Karl Lang just doesn’t want to see them in fuzzy house slippers and pajamas.
  • Throwin’ the baby out with the bathwater. Some crazy Memphis lady used her baby as a weapon yesterday, chucking the infant, carseat and all, at a Walmart employee who confronted her about shoplifting. The child landed face-down and lost consciousness, meanwhile, we’re losing all hope for humanity.
  • Bits & pieces. Commuter rail expansion is on the lips of local transportation leaders this week … A mysterious bottle, a list of chemicals and a threatening cassette tape caused a few hours of mayhem downtown this weekend. Who still uses cassette tapes? … New legislation may ban private companies from locking down your car with those pesky car boots … The ‘Dores won’t have to travel far to play in the NCAA Baseball regional tournament, and their odds are looking pretty good … Save the turtles!

The Weekendist: Remember The Days Edition

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Enjoy the long weekend stuffing yourself with barbeque and hanging out in the sun. Not that anyone needs our suggestions, but we’ve pulled together a list of our suggestions for the weekend. It’s the last weekend of this year’s Renaissance Festival, and it’s also the International Jousting Tourney weekend – our number one pick. For more, read on!

FRIDAY

  • Damien Horne Benefit For Akon, Sudan. The Rutledge, 8pm, $10. Damien Horne is joined by dozens of friends (Big Kenny, Jon Nicholson, Darnell Levine, Nathan Lee, Brandi Sellerz and more) on stage tonight to raise money for an upcoming relief trip to Sudan.
  • Sarah Siskind CD Release Show. The Basement, 9pm, $10. Come out to celebrate Sarah Siskind’s newest release, “Say It Louder.” You may know Sarah for her songwriting, but she’s a talented artist as well.

SATURDAY

  • Hands Together In Flatrock. Coleman Park, 10:50am-7pm. A music and arts festival designed to bring Flatrock and surrounding communities together, Hands Together In Flatrock is in its 2nd year and promises a day full of music, food, art, and other festivities.
  • Mitchell Musso. Rocketown, 7pm, $10 advance/$25 door. Who is Mitchell Musso? That kid from Hannah Montana, that’s who! Okay, so we really don’t suggest that you go to this, but whatever floats your boat. We just thought it was funny.

SUNDAY

  • Salute To Freedom. Nashville Shores, 5pm, event is free but parking is $10. Nashville Shores’ Memorial Day celebration takes place Sunday night, with admission free after 5pm (slides & pools close at 6:45pm) and exciting music, a flag-raising ceremony, and a great fireworks display.
  • Blackbird Tattoo & Gallery Grand Opening. 2306 12th Ave S, 1pm-11:30pm, free. A new hybrid art gallery/tattoo shop is opening in the 12 South district, and they’re throwing a party to celebrate! From 1pm-6pm, they’ll be open for business, grilling out and having a grand ol’ time. From 6pm-9pm, two art exhibits will be opening, and after 9pm, the party continues with music and dancing.

Happy Hour: Who’s Ready For A Vacation?

  • Happy Memorial Day weekend! Grill something good, and if you don’t know how, this might help. [Lifehacker]
  • Wine! We have it! Or we can go get it from other states now, at least. [WZTV]
  • Metro says they won’t be spraying for mosquitoes unless they really, really have to. [WKRN]
  • What does Memorial Day look like without the pools opening up? We’ll probably find out this weekend. [WKRN]
  • Police are looking for an elderly man with Alzheimer’s who got into a car and drove off last night. He has no driver’s license, no ID, and you can find a description of the car over at WSMV. [WSMV]
  • Remember that time Martina McBride did a surprise CD release-type thing at Tribe? Here are the pictures to prove it. [Out & About]

Driver’s Ed, Perhaps? [Mixed Reviews By People Who Don't Live Here]

We already knew that Nashville had some pretty bad drivers. Our daily commutes are such an adventure that we’re really not surprised that Tennessee drivers scored 38th place in a test administered by GMAC Insurance to test basic driving knowledge. Folks, that means that we are ranked in 14th place among States With The Worst Drivers. We hate to say it, but we told you so. Thanks to Dan Cotton for the tip!

And we may have figured out why Tennessee has such bad drivers. According to a recent study, 42% of Tennesseans text while driving, granting us the first-place trophy for texty states. Compare that to Arizona’s 18.8%  texting drivers, and reality stings just a little. [via Post Politics]

Bright & Early: Can’t Win For Losing Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Governor Phil is none too pleased with a fancy lobbying group called Families USA released a report yesterday that found all sorts of things wrong with CoverTN, our state’s public health insurance program. Among other things, the report claimed that the program is “likely to leave enrollees with high bills and lack of coverage” and is “far from the quality, affordable health coverage that people need.” Governor Phil lashed out at the group, saying that they were just trying to discredit the idea of a universal healthcare system, for which CoverTN is said to have been model.

Happy Hour: The Big Ten

  • Tennessee’s unemployment ended up being 9.9% for the month of April, which means we’re a mere tenth of a percentage point away from 10! Compare ot last year’s April unemployment rate of 6%. We’re getting depressed just thinking about it. [WSMV]
  • So let’s lighten things up with a cute video/slideshow/thing about Metro students covering the town with silly string and balloons and otherwise partying it up on the last day of school. [Tennessean]
  • We would also like to re-emphasize Councilman Eric Crafton’s $15,000+ in unpaid property taxes and note that it was a Belmont kid (represent!) who busted him for it. [Enclave Nashville]
  • The Cool Springs Bosco’s had a rough day today after a pizza oven caught the place on fire and racked up about $10,000 in damage. Fortunately everyone evacuated and no one was hurt. They’ll hopefully be able to reopen tomorrow. [WSMV]
  • All you state employees who smoke have a whole extra year to quit before they start charging you $50 extra per month for your health insurance. [WZTV]

Do Your Part To Keep Facebook Annoying: Take The For Really Real Nashville Quiz

Your Nashvillest editors have both just finished being declared “Cash Villains,” aka “the real deal,” aka we-guessed-at-most-of-the-answers-because-we’ve-only-lived-here-for-five-years. It even tells us that we’re “up to the minute on where it’s at & where it used to be.” What a relief!

While we were there, we took the How Nashville Are You? Facebook Quiz just for laughs, and it was embarrassingly easy. It validated us as “True Nashvillians,” and we went on our way with peace of mind. (Fine, so we stopped to take the What Fruit Is You? Facebook Quiz on our way out. Really, trust us on this one – just do it.)

If you’re up for the challenge, take The For Really Real Nashville Facebook Quiz and let us know how you stack up.

Bright & Early: Summertime Rolls Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Today is the last day of school for Metro students, and although we’re not sure we’re ready for them to be running loose and stealing our lawn ornaments all summer, we can certainly remember the importance of this sacred day for the kiddos. And hey, a few less buses and 15 mph school zones messing up our commutes sounds great to us. So school’s out, the college kids have peaced out for a few months, and now we enter this thing we call Summer In Nashville. We’re feeling good.

Happy Hour: Stimulate This

  • Tennessee is getting a boatload of stimulus money to help repair and weatherize low-income homes in hopes of saving money on utilities. [Tennessean]
  • Williamson County is putting the kibosh on the Young Adult Library Services Association’s 2009 list of Best Books for Young Adults because the list recommends some borderline-inappropriate reading materials. The books in question were deemed too “salacious” for the high school audience and covered topics like sexual abuse and cross-dressing. [Tennessean]
  • UT football coach Lane Kiffin is in trouble again with the NCAA, this time for a recruitment violation that involved posting a little too much information on his Twitter and Facebook accounts. [WSMV]
  • The Metro Council voted to buy the land for the new convention center even though they haven’t quite decided how we’re going to pay for it yet. Councilman Eric Crafton is none too pleased. [WSMV]
  • We almost forgot about the four Metro schools that are closing this year: Cora Howe, Ewing Park, Martha Vaught, and Brookemeade. [WSMV]

Photo Of The Day: May 20, 2009

We came across this fun capture by Neuski somewhat by accident when we were poking around our photo pool this morning. While heading into the Yazoo taproom back in March, he spotted this weird tire swing dangling from an I-40 overpass. We have no idea who would be tire-swinging from underneath the interstate, but that person is our hero.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.
