Happy Hour: Keep The Painted Side Up
- Hair World Beauty Supply in East Nashville took a tumble today (yes, we mean the whole store) after an SUV’s gas pedal got stuck and the driver backed into the corner of the building from the Suntrust lot next door. Fortunately no one was hurt including the driver, whose car was pretty much crushed by the wreckage. [WKRN]
- Speaking of things collapsing, a giant tunnel that runs underneath Shelbyville collapsed due to all the flooding in recent weeks and city officials are saying it could take a half-million dollars to repair it. [WSMV]
- Apparently lots of folks heard tornado sirens in Rogersville when some funnel clouds were spotted nearby, but they didn’t know that the sirens were tornado sirens because the town doesn’t have to use them that much. [WZTV]
- The head of the VA hospitals feels really bad about the 5 people who now have HIV and the 33 people who how have Hepatitis after being exposed to contaminated medical equipment. [WTVF]
- The kids in Murfreesboro are getting some help from the Department of Education in the way of $27,000 for recently-homeless students’ school supplies, transportation, clothing, and food. [WSMV]

48 Hour Film Project: 2009 Registration Now Open

Registration for this year’s 48 Hour Film Project, taking place the weekend of July 17, is open for business. The team fee is $135 through June 22, but don’t wait that long to sign up – Registration is first come, first served, and latecoming teams will be placed on a waiting list. The 48 Hour Film Project is growing by leaps and bounds, expanding to nearly 80 cities worldwide this year!
We participated in 2006 (which we hope you can’t find on YouTube) and it was certainly an unforgettable experience. We didn’t sleep, but we did eat (a lot) and we even had an appropriately theatrical dash to turn in our film at the very last moment. If you’re on the fence about joining or putting together a team, check out some of the films from the past few years.

MTV’s MADE Makes Stop At Rocketown

Guilty pleasure alert: We love MTV’s Made. Go ahead, poke fun, but it’s one of the few shows on MTV with a positive spin. We just can’t hate on a show that helps kids realize their dreams and accomplish things they never thought would be possible. And episodes always seem to be running marathon-style when we’re at the gym, providing the perfect amount of fluffy distraction to get us through a workout.
Anyway, enough gushing. Made is holding open auditions at Rocketown on May 22 from 8am-11am, which means that some lucky wannabe-whatever from Nashville could end up on MTV with a celebrity coach to whip them into shape. Rocketown doesn’t list any age constraints, but MTV’s usual casting call asks for ages 15-24, and we really haven’t ever seen anyone over 19 on the show. So if you think you have what it takes to be Made and you like crying on national tv, show up at Rocketown for the auditions on the 22nd.

Tonight: Japanese Returns To Hillsboro Village At Zumi Sushi [Comings & Goings]

We’ve been watching the building next to McDougal’s on Belcourt for a few months, as it’s slowly transformed into Zumi Sushi, the latest restaurant to open their doors in Hillsboro Village. After the mysterious departure of Taste of Tokyo last last year, a Japanese joint in the area is more than welcome – Though nothing will take ToT’s place in our hearts! Plus we’re total suckers for good sushi, and we’ve heard great things from a few folks who were lucky and 1337 enough to visit before the grand opening shindig.
Zumi Sushi opens their doors to the public today, and will be open Sunday through Thursday 11am-9pm and Friday & Saturday 11am-10pm. Just remember not to park behind the Pancake Pantry!

Bright & Early: Smaller World Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We were pretty intrigued when Mayor Dean mentioned a 28th Avenue connector road in his State of Metro address a few weeks back. Details are finally coming out about the new construction project which will connect 28th and 31st avenues over some railroad tracks just north of Centennial Park. The hope is that the north Nashville area containing Fisk, TSU, and Meharry will be more accessible (and can more easily access) the Broadway-West End corridor that houses much of Nashville’s economic development. City officials also hope that the connector will begin to desegregate the two parts of town since north Nashville is predominantly African American and, up until now, hasn’t had an easy way to get around to the rest of town.
- The city is currently trying to figure out how to navigate a $27 million shortfall, starting with probably laying off 100 employees. Though pretty much every department is getting a 10% cut, social services agencies like the Metro Action Commission and the Metro Homelessness Commission are particularly upset because they say they’re smaller than other departments and feel the cuts the worst.
- Looking for a cheap getaway? Do you enjoy fake inland man-made beaches that are completely underwater due to some flooding? Then Nashville Shores may be for you! The attraction opens up this weekend and is letting folks in for $15 instead of $25 because they’re all washed out.
- Bits & pieces. Kids like to skateboard in a park in Donelson and we’re not sure how this is newsworthy, but they do look like they have some pretty sweet pools … It’s almost as newsworthy as this expose on deciphering your kids’ secret texting codes … Legal same-sex marriage in Tennessee? Old news, apparently.

Nashvillest Turns One: Happy Birthday To Us!

We’re all grown up! Today marks our first birthday here at Nashvillest, and it’s been a wonderful year of bringing you freebies, photos, road closures, exclusives, polls, weird stuff, caffeine, comings & goings, Snoop Dogg, concert news, mixed reviews, gems from the Nashville Craigslist, Twestivals, blingees, TeeVee interviews, beer, burgers, CMApocalypse, the occasional sports post and all-around good times (and sleep deprivation).
We’ve logged over 1,250 posts, are closing in on almost 1,000 RSS subscribers, chat with more than 2,200 Nashvillians on Twitter, have had almost 100,000 visitors and the pageviews are climbing past 350,000 as we write! April 2009 was by far our best month, when our traffic mysteriously tripled and has been holding steady ever since. It goes without saying (but we’ll say it anyway) that we couldn’t have done it without a great group of friends, readers, subscribers, Twitter followers and tipsters offering us help and encouragement at every turn along the way. Seriously, we can’t thank y’all enough! Nashvillest has turned into something much bigger than we could have ever imagined, and we’re incredibly excited for year number two. We have some big plans in store, so stay tuned!
PS: If you want to give us a birthday present, we have the perfect idea. Think of one or two people you know that might find Nashvillest useful, and drop them a line about us! Just don’t spam your friends.
