Happy Hour: Twist And Shout
- We’ve got a tornado watch until 11pm! [WKRN]
- The same guy who robbed the Wachovia on Fourth Ave. downtown a few weeks ago robbed the same Wachovia again this morning. Lesson learned: If you find a good thing, stick with it? [City Paper]
- The VA hospitals (including the one in Murfreesboro) may be off the hook for accidentally probably infecting five people with HIV and 33 people with Hepatitis because there’s no way to tell for sure that the diseases came from contaminated medical equipment. [Tennessean]
- After 11 football players with scholarships have left UT since Lane Kiffin took over, we’re starting to wonder what kind of effect he has on people. [Tennessean]
- Some guy named Selby Seals in White County was arrested on 125 different sex charges. [WSMV]
- Cookeville police managed to track down two teens who they think are responsible for the soda bottle bomb that went off earlier this week at Avery Trace Middle School. [WKRN]

Nashville Not Cookout Capital Of The World, No One Is Surprised [Mixed Reviews]

This news comes as no surprise after the past month of rain, rain, tornadoes, rain and more rain. Blue Rhino, self-proclaimed cookout experts, have released a list of the nation’s Top Cookout Capitals, and Nashville comes in at a measly 55th place.
The list, in its third year, ranks markets with populations equal to or greater than 99,000 based on the number of ideal grilling days reported during the months of May through August, which are defined as days under 90 degrees and having no precipitation. Weather data was compiled from the National Weather Service.
We haven’t found a bad place for a cookout yet, but we do like to recognize places where ideal weather conditions make for great grilling.
This would not be so depressing if it hadn’t stormed like the dickens for the nth time this morning, and also if Seattle wasn’t ranked in 11th place. Whine, whine, whine… We just want it to clear up in time for a little grillin’ action for Memorial Day. Is that too much to ask? On the bright side, Miami came in last. At least our cookout season doesn’t suck as much as theirs!

Tomorrow: NPT’s Antiques & Fine Arts Appraisal Day

Any Antiques Roadshow fans in Nashville? Don’t get too excited – The show isn’t actually coming to town – But we think this is probably the next best thing. A handful of appraisers that have appeared on Antiques Roadshow will be working at the NPT Antiques and Fine Arts Appraisal Day this Saturday at The Factory at Franklin, and they’ll be appraising your mystery antiques just like on the TeeVee! Each individual item appraisal will cost $10, and the event runs from 9am-4pm on Saturday, May 9. Oh, and leave your coins, stamps, books, arrowheads and ESPECIALLY your burial materials at home! From NPT:
Special guest appraisers, all of whom have appeared on the hit PBS show, Antiques Roadshow, include Ronald Bourgeault (Folk Art, Silver); Linda Dyer (Tribal Arts); Rafael Eledge (Arms & Militaria); Kerry Keane (Musical Instruments); Gloria Lieberman (Jewelry); Simeon Lipman (Sports Memorabilia, Collectibles) Stuart Slavid (Pottery & Porcelain); and David Weiss (Paintings & Drawings, Metalwork & Sculpture and Rugs & Textiles).

Tomorrow: Stamp Out Hunger At Your Mailbox

On Saturday, May 9 (that’s tomorrow), your letter carriers will be on double duty as some sort of magic food-fairy delivery service, generously collecting food donations from the households on their routes and delivering them to Second Harvest Food Bank. You can participate in the Letter Carrier’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by cleaning out the ol’ pantry and tossing your canned goods into a bag left by your mailbox. Most needed items include canned tuna or chicken, peanut butter, canned soup, fruit, vegetables, rice and macaroni & cheese.

Free Crunk Friday At MAPCO [Freebies]

It’s Friday, you’re dragging through the last workday of the week, and what better thing to do than guzzle an entire 16oz can of a caffeine-riddled energy drink? Especially one called CRUNK? And especially if it’s free? Today is Free Crunk Friday at MAPCO, so march your brave selves to the nearest MAPCO and try a can of Crunk for free. And take it from us (because we might just be speaking from personal experience) and don’t try to drink a can each hour of your workday. Just don’t.

Bright & Early: That’s “Dr. Parton” To You Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Sure, there’s the pig flu still running rampant and lots more rain in the forecast and GM trying to bum $9 billion more from the feds, but the biggest news of the day is obviously that Dolly Parton is finally getting her honorary doctorate from UT-Knoxville this morning. The doctorate in humane and musical letters is intended to honor “her dedication to education, children and life-long learning” through her Imagination Library books-from-birth program. So congratulations, Dolly! You deserve it.
- Duggars in TN. Speaking of Dolly, her annual homecoming parade in Pigeon Forge is happening this evening at 6pm in Pigeon Forge, and that gigantic Duggar family from TLC–all 20 of them–will have their own float because they decided to take a family vacation to Pigeon Forge for some reason.
- Budget cuts. Davidson County and Tennessee are at risk of losing about $600,000 annually if President Obama decides to stop reimbursing state and local prisons for housing criminals who are also undocumented immigrants. A cut like this could put a pretty big dent in 287(g) local immigration enforcement programs like the one here in Davidson.
- Bits & pieces. Senator Bob Corker says he’s fine with having a homosexual justice on the Supreme Court … A homeless guy in Inglewood may have saved a woman’s life last night by knocking on her door at 1am to tell her that the vacant house next door was on fire … People tweet about lots of things, says the Tennessean.
