Happy Hour: Journalistic Integrity
- You know, we always figured the huge Kingston TVA ash spill would eventually make the rounds to national news, but GQ wasn’t exactly the publication we had in mind. [GQ via Pith In The Wind]
- In other news, the TVA is appealing a federal ruling that they need find a way to stop pumping toxins across the border into North Carolina. [Tennessean]
- The folks at the Spring Hill GM plant are going to have a long weekend awaiting Monday’s announcement about whether the plant will be shutting down. [WKRN]
- Aw, John Rich is like totally stressed out! [Tennessean]
- For our readers out in Murfreesboro, we had no idea y’all were so crafty. Stealing $26,000 sprinkler systems right out of the ground? Color us impressed. [WSMV]
- And also, DON’T FORGET THAT TDOT IS SHUTTING DOWN I-40 AND RUINING LIVES THIS WEEKEND STARTING TONIGHT. Don’t say we didn’t warn ya. [WTVF]

The Weekendist: Go Get Some Ice Cream Edition

It’s Friday! It’s Friday! Our first stop this weekend is going to be the Urban Project Graffiti art show at The Showroom, because we’re dying to see this one before it closes next week. After that, who knows where you might find us (hint: probably somewhere enjoying the sunny, 85-degree weather that’s coming our way tomorrow). This week’s list is long, but we just couldn’t leave out any of the great things happening. Enjoy your options!
FRIDAY
- Tango At Twilight. Centennial Park events shelter, 8pm, free. Check out the post we did about this for more info!
- Frist Fridays with Danielle Peck. The Frist Center, 6pm, free for Frist members or $8.50 for non-members. Check out the post we did about this for more info!
- Poolapalooza with Jeffrey Steele. Opryland’s Cascades pool, 6pm, free. Check out the post we did about this for more info!
SATURDAY
- Benefit For The Red Cross. Smyrna Bowling Center, 12pm-4pm, cost varies. Remember those nasty tornadoes that tore through Murfreesboro several weeks ago? The Smyrna Bowling Center is hosting a huge fundraiser this weekend to benefit the Red Cross disaster relief fund, in hopes of providing some relief to folks affected by tornadoes and other natural disasters. Special bowling rates, tons of food vendors, inflatable jumpy things, silent auction, prizes, massage therapists, DJs, dunking booths, rock walls, and the list just goes on. Smyrna may be a long haul from Nashville, but it’s a fun afternoon for the family and it benefits a great cause.
- Farmapalooza. Franklin Farmer’s Market behind The Factory, 8am-1pm, free.
- Metro Public Works E-Waste Collection Day. Hermitage (Hobby Lobby shopping center), 9am-12pm. If you missed the e-waste collection day at LP Field a few weeks ago, you’ve got a second chance to ditch those broken electronics cluttering up the spare room. Recycle batteries, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, cell phones, printers, microwaves, stereos, audio equipment, computers and more.
- Provence’s Artisan Bread Fest. Hillsboro location, 10am-1pm. Snack on samples, learn about bread baking, take advantage of sweet discounts on bread you can’t otherwise afford. Sounds perfect to us!
- Bike For Branches. Check out the post we did about this for more info!
- Chili Cookoff. Riverfront Tavern, $10 entry fee. Riverfront Tavern has pretty much the least helpful listing on their website for this. There is no time listed and it says to register ahead of time, but no further instructions. So on that note, if you can figure out when the thing is and how to register, whip up a batch of your secret chili and you might win $300! Drink specials include $3 Yazoo and $2.50 Yuengling during the event. Note: Downtown Details lists the time as 3pm.
- Nashville Sounds doubleheader & Purity Faith Night. Greer Stadium, 6pm, $6-$10 regular tickets or $12 ticket with hot dog & drink. The Sounds are back in town for a doubleheader against the Omaha Royals, and this Saturday is also the first of the year’s Purity Faith Nights. Christian band Philmont will play a pre-game concert, game tickets include concert admission and a hot dog/soda combo.
- Cheekwood Free Summer Saturdays. Cheekwood, 9:30am-4:30pm, free admission for guests under 17. Check out the post we did about this for more info!
SUNDAY
- Muddy Buddy Ride & Run. Check out the post we did about this for more info!
- Share Our Strengths: A Tasteful Pursuit. The Hermitage Hotel Grand Ballroom, 6pm, $95. The $95 ticket price may be an immediate turn-off for some, but we wanted to include it because the A Tasteful Pursuit dinners
- Nashville Sounds: Lance Family Sunday & Purity Sundae Sunday. Greer Stadium, 2pm, tickets are 2-for-1. Head back to the ballfield to watch the Sounds play the Omaha Royals again… Because tickets are buy one, get one free on Lance Family Sunday! It’s also Purity Sundae Sunday, and ice cream sundaes are only $1. Mmm.
- Rock & Roll Team Trivia. The Mercy Lounge, 8pm, free (with free parking & drink specials). The Mercy Lounge is starting a new Rock & Roll Trivia night, and our only question is why they didn’t think of it sooner. The top three trivia teams get a hefty break on their bar tabs as a prize.

Bright & Early: Lovers’ Quarrel Edition
Good morning, Nashville. It’s been a long time (though probably not long enough) since we’ve heard about Nashville’s favorite celeb John Rich doing something ridiculous, but yesterday he finally turned himself in to face some assault and harassment charges filed against him by former Nashville Star contestant Jared Ashley. Ashley has been claiming for a while now that Rich hit him in the face and Rich once tried to sue Ashley for defamation. We’d give our commentary, but we doubt this story needs it.
- Nashville for all. The Loews Vanderbilt Hotel has put the kibbosh on what many folks were calling an Islamophobic conference that was supposed to be held there this weekend. The conference, “Understanding the Jihad in Israel, Europe, and America,” was organized by the New English Review and featured speakers from a variety of anti-Muslim groups, websites, and publications.
- All dried up. We’d really almost forgotten about all the water shortages last summer that left several counties dry and mooching off of neighboring counties for weeks. Sumner County, which was hit particularly hard last year, is taking every possible step to be more prepared for it this time around… though we’re certainly not seeing any shortage of rain at the moment.
- Bits & pieces. Last night’s public meeting about the proposed May Town Center sounds like it got a bit dramatic … The state really wants to keep all of our health information in a giant database to help them identify and predict Tennessee’s health trends … Murfreesboro is getting an early start on the mosquito prevention.

This Weekend: Get Outside And Bike For Branches With A Muddy Buddy

Nashville is certainly living up to its newfound reputation as a semi-fit city this weekend. Between Saturday’s Bike For Branches and Sunday’s Muddy Buddy Ride & Run, even the most enthusiastic fitness buffs should be pretty worn out. It’s not too late to register for either one, so if your weekend is clear and you’re feeling up to the challenge, sign up for one or both!
BIKE FOR BRANCHES
Bike For Branches is a leisurely seven-mile ride past some of Nashville’s oldest and largest trees. The route is very appropriate, because the money raised by Bike For Branches will go toward planting more trees in the area. They’ll even send you the GPS location of the tree they plant in your name! If a bike ride sounds a little too ambitious on your Saturday afternoon, you can still support the cause by attending the Bike For Branches outdoor music festival immediately following the ride. Featuring local artists The Elmwood Band, Michael Ford Jr & The Apache Relay, Bobby Hamrick Band, The Delta Saints, Michael Ford Jr & The Apache Relay, The Gabe Dixon Band, The Bluff, Sharon Lang and Denitia Odigie, the 12 South district will be seeing quite the lively evening.
Bike For Branches will take place in 12 South’s Sevier Park. Event registration begins at 2pm, bike ride begins at 3pm, after-ride drinks at the 12 South Taproom at 4pm and the outdoor music festival begins at 4:30pm. Registration for the bike ride & music festival is $25, festival only tickets are $15.
MUDDY BUDDY RIDE & RUN
The leisurely pace of Saturday’s Bike For Branches is a very good thing for those participating in both events this weekend, because the Muddy Buddy Ride & Run is anything but leisurely. Teams of two will compete in this half riding, half running the nearly seven-mile race, completing obstacles along the way and finishing it off in a big pit of mud. Wondering where there’s a big mud pit in Nashville? There isn’t one. The competition will actually take place in Ashland City, in the Cheatham Wildlife Management Area.
Muddy Buddy Ride & Run packet pickup will begin at 6am (or pick them up on Saturday at REI in Brentwood), with the race beginning at 8am sharp. After the race, all participants 21+ are entitled to two complimentary beers, which sounds like the perfect way to cap off a muddy morning. Register here in teams of two ($150 per team).

Get Your Dancing Shoes Ready: Dancing In The Park 2009

We somehow missed this year’s inaugural Tango at Twilight on May 15, but that doesn’t mean we missed all the fun. There are still plenty more evening dancing dates in Centennial Park to sate our desire for a good sweaty outdoor dancing romp with strangers!
Tango at Twilight works like this: From 8-8:30pm, there’s a short tango lesson to learn the basics of the Argentinean tango. Then, take your newfound tango skillz to the big time, because from 8:30-10pm is the actual Dance Social. It’s free, all ages and skill levels are welcome, and it’s really just a big party in the park on Tango at Twilight nights.
The second Tango at Twilight is tomorrow night at the Centennial Park event shelter, with dates every other Friday from there (5/29, 6/12, 6/26, 7/10, 7/24, 8/14, 8/28).
The summer’s other outdoor dance events are Big Band Dances, and they work pretty much the same way as Tango at Twilight. Short dance lessons are from 7:30-8pm and from 8:30-8:50pm on Big Band Dance nights, with open dancing from 7:30-10pm. They’re held every Saturday beginning June 6 in the Centennial Park event shelter, and have become a great community event every year. Big Band Dances cover a broad variety of dance styles, are also free, and families are welcomed. This year’s schedule is:
June 6: The Moonlighters Big Band (Rumba)
June 13: Bill Sleeter Band (Rumba)
June 20: Radio Daze Big Band (Swing)
June 27: Music City Swing (Swing)
July 11: Stardust (ChaCha)
July 18: The Moonlighters Big Band (ChaCha)
July 25: Merchants of Cool (Foxtrot)
August 1: The Usual Suspects (Foxtrot)
August 8: Radio Daze Big Band (Tango)
August 15: Debbie Bailes Band (Tango)
August 22: Music City Swing (Waltz)
August 29: The Moonlighters Big Band (Waltz)

The Hills’ Lauren Conrad Wrote A Book, Is Schlepping It To Nashville In Person

Ahem. We’re here to let you know that THE Lauren Conrad of MTV’s The Hills has written a book entitled “L.A. Candy.” Well, that’s not actually what we wanted to let you know. Apparently, not only has she written the book, but she’s actually going to be bringing it to Nashville herself, in person, Miley-style to the Green Hills Davis-Kidd Booksellers on June 23.
As per the usual Davis-Kidd drill, they want you to sign up for their Gives Back program ($10-$25 membership options) in order to get tickets to the book signing. Tickets are free with the preorder purchase of LC’s new book, and Gives Back members may begin purchasing on June 2. Non-members have to wait a week until June 9 to get their tickets. [more info here; scroll down to June events]

Photo Of The Day: May 28, 2009
Nothing says summer like a bottle of bubbles. MeganMorris captured this perfectly-formed sphere in her back yard over Memorial Day weekend.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Networking It Up: Another Month, Another Golden Kraut [Geekery]

Whether you fly your geek flag high (it’s okay, we do!) or you’re just now figuring out that whole Facebook thing, the folks at Centresource are throwing another one of their monthly shindigs this evening that you probably shouldn’t miss. Besides the free Yazoo and snacky things, these monthly interactive mixers have become one of our favorite places for networking and staying on top of what’s going on in Nashville’s lively tech community. And, you could be the next winner of the two most prestigious (and ridiculous) awards in town–The Golden Kraut and the Silvery Beans:
Golden Kraut is more than a can of Kraut radiating a golden hue as if reflecting the brilliance of the Sun. It’s a symbol – a beacon of unity, hope, and love. It’s been said that people who are awarded the Golden Kraut instantly understand — but cannot enunciate – the path to world peace and everlasting happiness.
Silvery Beans represent the ultimate source of cool – that “je ne se quois” only understood by Chuck Norris, Tom Selleck, Marilyn Monroe, Vin Diesel, Pat Benatar, and David Lee Roth. The Silvery Beans are a monument to grace under pressure, a cool unaffectedness, and the embodiment of style points.
Silliness aside, if you’ve been waiting for an un-awkward way to get your feet wet with the local tech community, this is a great place to start. The mixer will be happening tonight at Centresource’s castle office in Germantown from 5-8pm. Check out the invite for details and to RSVP.
