Bright & Early: You Can’t Touch This Edition

Good morning, Nashville. The deadline is quickly approaching for the TVA to claim immunity against the seven lawsuits, including four class-action suits, they’re facing for the Kingston spill. They’ve been threatening this for months, but a federal judge has finally laid down the mandate that they’ll need to file by April 17. Residents are none too happy about the whole immunity thing and have taken to blowing up the agency phonelines with complaints (which the TVA is required to save as evidence), nearly crashing the whole phone system. And also, everyone hates their new powerlines.

Happy Hour: Fighting The Good Fight

  • Rutherford County has decided to refuse a settlement offer in the Bible Park USA lawsuit. Basically, they’re saying they’ve done nothing wrong by saving Murfreesboro from the Bible-themed amusement park and don’t feel like shelling out a few million bucks to admit defeat. [WTVF]
  • The legislature might have declared milk to be our official state beverage, but another bill making the rounds at the Plaza would allow us to produce even more Tennessee whiskey than we already do. [WKRN]
  • We know you will all be heartbroken to hear that Phil Vassar is postponing his free show tomorrow at Wildhorse due to inclement weather predictions. Or maybe because he knows that Flight of the Conchords would totally steal his thunder… [Tennessean]
  • Even more stimulus money is coming down the pipes for Metro Schools, if they can ever figure out how to handle it. [City Paper]
  • BNA is also in line to receive some stimulus money to fix their ramps. [WSMV]
  • The Scene’s Pith In The Wind put together a great retrospective on WSMV’s Dan Miller, longtime anchor and friend of the station who passed away unexpectedly yesterday. [Pith In The Wind]
  • They be steppin’: MTSU students are now calling for the resignation of the school’s president over recent budget cuts. [WSMV]

Today: Free Day At Traveller’s Rest [Freebies]

Admission to Traveller’s Rest Plantation & Museum is free today (regular price $10) in honor of John Overton’s birthday. Traveller’s Rest is tucked back off Franklin Road between the Harding & Old Hickory intersections, and is home to the Overton house and plantation (which dates back to the year 1799). We think Traveller’s Rest is often overlooked amidst the rest of Nashville’s glitzy glammy scammy tourism hotspots, and encourage you to check it out – But hurry, because they’re only open until 4:30pm. Since it’s free, there’s nothing to lose! Traveller’s Rest is at 636 Farrell Parkway, Nashville, TN 37220.

Cirque du Soleil: Saltimbanco Opens Tonight In Nashville

Bringing the Vegas to Nashvegas (ugh, does everyone else hate that term as much as we do?), Cirque du Soilel‘s Saltimbanco opens tonight at the Sommet Center and will be running through Sunday, adding a little, um, flavor to our Easter weekend! Cirque du Soileil needs little explanation, so we’ll cut straight to the chase – Discount $25 tickets are available here (thanks to loyal tipster Chris Chamberlain for the link). And for those who want to know a little more about this particular show:

Saltimbanco -from the Italian “saltare in banco”, which literally means “to jump on a bench”-explores the urban experience in all its myriad forms: the people who live there, their idiosyncrasies and likenesses, families and groups, the hustle and bustle of the street and the towering heights of skyscrapers. Between whirlwind and lull, prowess and poetry, Saltimbanco takes spectators on an allegorical and acrobatic journey into the heart of the city.

Saltimbanco is a Cirque du Soleil signature show inspired by the urban fabric of the metropolis and its colorful inhabitants. Decidedly baroque in its visual vocabulary, the show’s eclectic cast of characters draws spectators into a fanciful, dreamlike world, an imaginary city where diversity is a cause for hope.

Cirque du Soileil: Saltimbanco Nashville Showtimes

Thursday, April 9: 7:30pm (tickets)
Friday, April 10: 3:30pm (tickets), 7:30pm (tickets)
Saturday, April 11: 3:30pm (tickets), 7:30pm (tickets)

Bright & Early: Mistakes We Knew They Were Making Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We mentioned yesterday that the security contractor for Metro Nashville Public Schools accidentally leaked the names, birth dates, and social security numbers of more than 18,000 students and 6,000 parents onto the internet. Oops! Last night, they sent out a sheepish email about the breach (view it hereThanks to Jody S. for the tip!) letting folks know that the contractor will be providing one year of identity theft protection. To put it into perspective, though, the Davidson County Election Commission misplaced 337,000 of our social security numbers back when they had their big data breach in 2007. So really, this is no biggie (…)!

Happy Hour: Stickin’ It To The Man

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE! [Gems From The Nashville Craigslist]

No, not that Zombie Apocalypse. This one:

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR SURVIVALIST GROUP (Well fortified compound)

I am a former Navy Seal/ex-CIA Agent and have witnessed secret operations inside our government that will ensure a ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE by the year 2012. Due to these experiments conducted by the US Government in joint cooperation with Haiti Voodoo Shamans, I have decided it is my American and Civil Duty to train as many individuals as possible to help fight back the oncoming zombie hordes soon to be released upon us.

I have already come in contact with infected individuals due to my training and from such experiences can now teach future survivors on how to properly exterminate zombies and soon to be zombies.

My training will include but not limited to:
*Instruction in the proper gear to wear and best types of armor for the appropriate situation
*Instruction in firearm use and show where the vital killing points are on any given zombie
*Advice on what weapons work best and in what situation. GUNS ARE NOT ALWAYS THE ANSWER.
*Interactive, realistic simulation of a zombie apocalypse via zombie boardgames (The Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game)
*Instruction on how to cope from emotional damage after having to kill infected love ones with a crowbar to their head on or face area
*Instructions on how not to feel sympathy for zombie babies
*Proper killing methods for zombie babies perfected by the Spanish Conquistadors hundreds of years ago on Mayan babies
*Creative energies will be pumped to maximum efficiency as I will help you determine your unique battle anthem AND I will also help you come up with your personalized “Last Words” so all your comrades and friends will remember that you went out in style and flare. YOU WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN OR YOUR MONEY BACK!!!!

Though not required I STRONGLY recommend reading “The Zombie Survival Guide” by Max Brooks as I will be covering it extensivly during our training

Upon completion of my survival course each graduate will receive a Zombie Bozo button for thier jacket
One(1) Zombie First survival Kit will be handed out to each graduate of my program(CONTAINS 1 FIREARM WITH A SINGLE ROUND IN THE CHAMBER)
One(1) Certificate denoting you have completed my course and are a CERTIFIED SURVIVOR.

DON’T WAIT. CONTATACT ME NOW BEFORE THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE STARTS!!!

There is a one time no money back fee of $2500.00 for the training.

He even includes some helpful photos of the materials used in training! Wow!
