SPIN’s Top Indie Record Stores In The Country: Grimey’s Makes The Cut

We love Grimey’s, and SPIN does too! In honor of Record Store Day tomorrow, SPIN magazine picked their top 15 favorite independent record stores in the United States, and not only did Grimey’s make the top 15 cut, they made it into the top 10 at number 8! Here’s what SPIN has to say about Grimey’s:

Why It Rocks: Five years ago, Grimey’s Records outgrew their space and moved into its current stylized, three-pedimented building, which it shares with Thirty Tigers music marketing and distribution upstairs and popular venue the Basement downstairs. Grimey’s is definitely the meat of this sandwich, with an amazingly broad selection (for its size), very affordable prices, and history as a stalwart of indie cool in a town that’s known for a very different kind of music scene.

Fans Say: ”Best store in Nashville (that doesn’t deal exclusively in country music). They’ve got a real good selection of new/used vinyl, indie and import CDs, DVDs, and books. And they probably do some of the best in-stores anywhere. Pound for pound, it’s one of the best in the country.” — Bob Mehr (music writer, The Commercial Appeal)

Congratulations Grimey’s, and well-earned, we say.

Happy Hour: Casualties Of The Twitter War

  • Ashton Kutcher has planted some billboards around town asking us all to follow him on Twitter. Thanks to Nashvillest operative and Twitter friend @tvcurt, we’ve got some pictures of the Antioch billboard. [Ad Age]
  • Apparently Tennessee has more tornado-related deaths than any other state in the last decade. Incidentally, the experts tell us we should all figure out a plan for if (when?) we find ourselves in one. [WTVF]
  • If fake IDs are your thing, you won’t be getting them from these guys anymore. Metro Police busted three men who had been peddling fake IDs in seven different states. [WSMV]
  • Three people have now tested positive for HIV after several VA hospitals accidentally exposed patients to some contaminated medical equipment. One of the folks was exposed at the VA hospital in Murfreesboro. [WSMV]
  • In an effort to become relevant, the Tennessee State Fair rolled out a brand spankin’ new website this week, and we have to admit they did a pretty great job. [WSMV]
  • The parent company of First Tennessee Bank, First Horizon National Corp., posted an $82.8 million loss in the first quarter. [Tennessean]

We Got Hacked! [Things That Make Us Sad]

If you’re one of the folks who follow us on Twitter, you probably noticed that our account spewed about 80 obnoxious tweets this afternoon over a span of two minutes. We got hacked by the Mikeyy worm, which is a nasty little Twitter bug invented by a jerky 17-year old that works its way in through an Internet Explorer security breach. With the help of our tech guru David Cintron, we’ve got it under control now, but aren’t able to use our account at the moment because the hack forced us over our update limit. We’ll be back in business as soon as we can! Needless to say, if you see an account spewing tweets like ours, don’t even visit the profile until they’ve got it cleared up.

Photo Of The Day: April 17, 2009

This sure seems to be the week for panoramas, eh? This email submission from Henry Pile captures the Grimey’s in-store performance by Mike Farris, which was apparently pretty impressive. You can catch him Sunday night at the Station Inn and later this summer at Bonnaroo. Best viewed large.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

The Weekendist: Busy, Busy, Busy Edition

This weekend is, well, the busiest we’ve had since last year when all this stuff happened at the same time. It’s kind of unfortunate that The Powers That Be decided to hold all of these events on the same weekend. because we can’t do everything (but we’re sure going to try). Now, if only we could learn to teleport…

You’ll find us at Rites of Spring, the Nashville Film Festival, Record Store Day at Grimey’s, and at the Earth Day Festival. Let us know if you’re going to one of the events we can’t make it to!

FRIDAY

  • Rites of Spring. Vanderbilt Alumni Lawn, 3pm-12am, $40/day or $55/both days. Big-name rapper T.I. headlines Friday’s Rites of Spring at Vandy, with openers Run With Bulls, Blueskyreality, K’NAAN, Okkervil River, Santigold and Q-Tip.
  • Nashville Film Festival. Regal Green Hills Cinema, $11 regular price per screening, $9 student price. So the Film Festival runs until next Thursday, but it’s a great way to spend your weekend. So pick out a few films to screen from the schedule, and have a good time!
  • Highballs & Hydrangeas. Cheekwood, 7pm-10pm, $20 at the door. Art, cocktails, gardens and schmoozing. If that’s your thing, you can always count on Cheekwood.
  • Nashville On The Rocks. Country Music Hall Of Fame, 5:30-9pm, $55 at the door. As one of the many opportunities to get your fancy drink on this weekend, Nashville On The Rocks raises money for The District, Inc., a non-profit that is dedicated to the revitalization of Nashville’s historic urban areas.

SATURDAY

  • Ragin’ Cajun Crawfish Boil. Greer Stadium, 4pm-9pm, $20 at the door. The 10th Annual Ragin’ Cajun Crawfish Boil may be a good way to finish off a day of festivals and music (or take a break in the middle, at least). We like this particular crawfish boil because all of the proceeds benefit two charities, the Nashville Sounds Reading Club and NAJCC Charities. And really, you get a pretty big bang for your buck, because your $20 covers food, soft drinks, and live music from some great 80′s cover bands. And $1 beers sound promising!
  • Singin’ In the Rain. The Belcourt, Saturday 12pm, Sunday 12pm & 3:10pm, Monday 7pm, $6.25. The Belcourt’s Weekend Classics series presents Singin’ In The Rain this week, and who could resist that?! There are several showtimes that run through Monday, so pick the one that’s most convenient and enjoy the blast from the past.
  • Herb Society of Nashville’s Annual Herb Sale. Tennessee State Fairgrounds, Sports Arena, 9am. The Herb Society of Nashville has a long list of unusual herb plants that will be available for sale, but be prepared to brave a frenzy of gardeners! [via Bites]
  • Cherry Blossom Festival. Metro Courthouse, 2pm, free. At Nashville’s very first Cherry Blossom Festival, the first 100 trees will actually be planted right before our eyes! We’re not sure what the “festival” entails, but it seems like the start of something that could grow into a beautiful tradition.
  • Earth Day Festival. Centennial Park, 11am-7pm, free. We can’t speak highly enough of one of our favorite festivals every year, the Earth Day Festival. Go and learn, snag some freebies, and enjoy being outside after all of this bipolar weather we’ve been having.
  • Record Store Day. Grimey’s, 10am-8pm, free. Okay, we’ve been giving Grimey’s a lot of love, because they always have the biggest party on the block, but we’d hate for everyone to forget about the OTHER independent record stores in town that will be participating in Record Store Day as well. The Great Escape is planning a sidewalk sale, and The Groove in East Nashville has a pretty impressive party planned too.
  • Rites of Spring. Vanderbilt Alumni Lawn, 3pm-12am, $40/day or $55/both days. Saturday’s Rites of Spring lineup includes Pico Vs. Island Trees, Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, Erik Baker, Sara Watkins (of Nickel Creek), Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, Grand Ole Party, N.E.R.D. and of course, headliners The Flaming Lips. We’re anxious to see if they’ll scale down their antics for this outdoor mini-fest, but we sure hope not.

SUNDAY

  • Downtown Home Tour. Downtown, 12pm-6pm, $10. The 2009 Live It Up! Downtown Home Tour showcases twelve downtown dwellings, including some of the newer contemporary lofts and condos. Visit Nashville Downtown Partnership for more info.
  • Taste of Cool Springs. Cool Springs Galleria, 7pm-9pm, $40 at the door. Raising money for the United Way of Williamson County, Taste of Cool Springs ticketholders will enjoy sampling food & wine from dozens of  the area’s restaurants and shops. A full list of participating vendors is here.
  • Music City Walk Of Fame Induction Ceremony. Nashville Visitor’s Center inside the Sommet Center Tower, 2:30pm, free. On Sunday, a long list of folks will be receiving pretty commemorative stars in the Music City Walk Of Fame, and the ceremony is open to the public. Dr. R.H. Boyd, Cowboy Jack Clement, Mike Curb, Marty Stuart, Josh Turner and CeCe Winans are in this month’s class.

So there you have it. This weekend just might kill us, but at least we’ll enjoy it.

Bright & Early: When The Well Runs Dry Edition

Good morning, Nashville. If you’re reading this from work this morning, you’re pretty lucky. The Tennessee unemployment rate hit 9.6% last month and economists predict it won’t be getting better anytime soon. Consequently, more than 7,0000 Tennesseans are reaching the end of their 59 weeks of Federal unemployment benefits. If we continue losing our jobs at this rate, the state’s Labor Department predicts that as many as 57,000 more Tennesseans could exhaust their benefits by July 4. Though Congress already tacked on 33 weeks of benefits last year, there’s talk of using some of the stimulus funding to add another 20 weeks.

Vandy’s Rites Of Spring: T.I., Nickel Creek, and Flaming Lips, Oh My!

With the sudden explosion of events and festivals this weekend, it seems that Nashville is finally stepping out of hibernation after a really long, really gross winter. And if the Nashville Film Festival, Earth Day, Grimey’s Record Store Day, Cherry Blossom Festival (yes, we have one of those), Music City Walk of Fame inductions, and GMA Week insanity aren’t enough to keep us busy, Vanderbilt University’s Rites Of Spring mini-festival kicks off tomorrow night in no small fashion with everyone’s favorite machine-gun-toting rapper T.I. leading the pack.

The festivities kick off around 3pm both days on Alumni Lawn, and unless you’re packing a Vandy student ID, a weekend pass will set you back $45 in advance or $55 if you wait until tomorrow. Single day passes are on sale for $40. And since we have to prioritize on a weekend like this, here are our picks (or you can see the full schedule here):

FRIDAY

  • K’NAAN, 6:20p – 7:05p. In 1991, K’NAAN entered the country as a refugee from Somalia, fleeing a civil war that left 400,000 dead. Now he tours around the country rapping about all things political and apparently opens for T.I. We picked up his record for 3 bucks on Amazon one day and fell in love.
  • Q-Tip, 9:30p – 10:30p. If for no other reason than the fact that he produced for Nas and Mariah Carey, this is one rap legend you probably shouldn’t miss if you’re into that sort of thing.
  • T.I., 11p – midnight. We won’t try to mask our excitement here, so just know that at 11pm on Friday night, at least one of your Nashvillest editors will be the happiest person alive. And also, this is one of T.I.’s last public appearances before he goes off to jail for doing some very bad things.

SATURDAY

  • Sara Watkins, 5:40p – 6:10p. Sara Watkins is a household name around these parts, especially considering we first knew her as Nickel Creek’s fiddle player since 1989. Last week, Sara released her first solo record and we’re hoping to hear some of it on Saturday.
  • N.E.R.D., 8:40p – 9:55p. We’d be remiss not to mention N.E.R.D., who hail from our hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia. They’re the perfect blend of rock, punk and hip hop, but we’re upset that they have a longer set than T.I.
  • Flaming Lips, 10:30p – midnight. This is probably the act that everyone’s waiting for, and they’re real weird, and we wouldn’t have them any other way. For the die-hards among us, we’ve heard a very unofficial rumor about a surprise appearance at Grimey’s Record Store Day. But then again, what do we know?

Happy Hour: Don’t Breathe Unless You Have To

  • Lest we forget about the folks in Kingston and their nasty, nasty TVA ash spill back in December, more reports of health problems are rolling in by the day. Also, more than 200 residents have stepped up in the class action suit against the TVA with more on the way. [Pith In The Wind]
  • We feel obligated to tell you that Playboy is casting next Tuesday and Wednesday. That is all. [Tennessean]
  • Nashville is following Franklin in introducing crime tips via text message through Nashville Crime Stoppers. Unfortunately, we can’t find any info on how to do this. If you have the scoop, leave it in the comments. [WSMV]
  • Two hundred Tennessee National Guardsmen were shipped out for training to be deployed to Iraq. [WZTV]
  • Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall is pretty excited that he was able to rid the city of 5,300 undocumented immigrants with his 287(g) program. [WSMV]

Saturday: Grimey’s Record Store Day

As Record Store Day draws near, we find ourselves shuffling our weekend schedule so much that it looks like we’ll be making three separate trips to Grimey’s for the festivities on Saturday. And although there’s no promises of a Bat Poet appearance (he showed up last year), we’re still looking forward to it. Grimey’s has lined up a solid list of performances, and you can count on the Yazoo beer & BBQ showing up. The Avett Brothers and MuteMath are the big names playing this year, but it’s all free anyway… So check out a band or artist that you haven’t heard before.

  • 12:00pm: The Avett Brothers
  • 12:45pm: Stardeath & White Dwarfs
  • 1:45pm: Michigan City Vandals
  • 2:30pm: DeRobert & The Half-Truths
  • 3:15pm: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears
  • 4:00pm: Charlie Louvin
  • 4:45pm: Del McCoury
  • 5:15pm: Royal Bangs
  • 6:00pm: The Ettes
  • 7:00pm: MuteMath

In addition to the shows, Grimey’s back lot is bound to be overflowing with discount music, and they’ll be carrying a bunch of big releases a few days early. Grimey’s will be open from 10am-8pm on Saturday for Record Store Day.

Bright & Early: What Is Your Emergency Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Hopefully none of you had any life-threatening emergencies yesterday morning because the city’s 911 call center accidentally went offline. Supposedly, AT&T was simply following their work order when they cut every single phone line to the 911 center, but the result rendered emergency services unreachable for about 30 minutes. Though the dispatchers said they would try to return all the missed calls, we’re guessing it probably won’t help. No one has owned up to the mistake 24 hours later and AT&T still maintains that they were just doing their job.
