Nashvillest Guide To Dining Out & Doing It Cheap

Though there are many websites that exist to help cut dining costs by passing out tips & pointers on what foods to order, what times to visit, what coupons to bring, what specials to request and what entrees to split, that’s just not us. We’re all about pinching pennies, but we like to enjoy a great meal out a few times a week. Fortunately for us, it’s pretty easy in Nashville to get a completely satisfying meal at some of our favorite places at up to half the price, without scrimping and cutting corners and sharing your delicious morsels of food. And we’re going to tell you how. We’ve covered some of these sites before (here and here), but we’re rounding it all up and slapping together a quick Nashvillest Guide To Dining Out & Doing It Cheap.
Half Off Depot: Our new favorite of the bunch, Half Off Depot has half price gift certificates to the new Gulch hotspot Urban Flats, as well as half price gift certificates for the Copper Kettle. Who could turn that down?
Crave & Save: The Tennessean‘s half-off spot on the internet. Current deals are a little on the random side, such as half off some hotels, spas, and indoor rock climbing facilities. Oh, and half off gift certificates to the Nashville Palace. Wow.
Half-Off Nashville Thursday: Local ABC affiliate WKRN offers half-price gift certificates for a variety of local dining and services. Current deals include half price at several spas, Woody’s Steakhouse, Cafe Coco’s Italian Market and more. New deals may become available on Thursday mornings.
Clear Channel Nashville Great Deals: Current half price deals include the Nashville Zoo and McFaddens, among others.
River Rewards: Half price deals from 107.5 The River’s Woody & Jim, current specials include Woody’s Steakhouse, NYNY Pizza, Peabody Corner Marketplace and more. New deals may become available on Friday mornings.
Gerry’s Half Off: Coming up, we’re looking at half price Blue Coast Burrito, Maggie Moos and Fulin’s gift certificates, which is pretty much our dream collection of half price gift certificates. New deals may become available on Friday mornings.
Nashville Originals: Four times a year, Nashville Originals (aka the best of the best) holds a discount gift certificate sale where lucky earlybirds can score 30-40% off gift certificates on the absolute best dining that Nashville has to offer. We love those sweet moments four times a year.
Focus Nashville: Where they pay you to sit in a room and eat fast food. Seriously, if you’re down with being a guinea pig, sign up with Focus Nashville and they’ll call on you for a variety of food-related studies, which usually involve you getting free food and a tidy little paycheck on top of it. Thanks to Chris C. for the tip!
Nashville CitiPass & Nashville Entertainment Book: If you’re a diligent coupon-user who frequently dines with at least one other person, these books are perfect. Containing mostly buy-one-get-one-free coupons for entrees at hundreds of local & chain businesses, you’ll save what you spent on the book after using just one or two coupons. We love ‘em!
Restaurant.com: The steepest of discounts, but the slimmest of pickings. Restaurant.com can be quite the hassle, but once you get the hang of reading the fine print and figuring out what works, gift certificates valued at more than double the price for $3-$10 is something we could get used to. Most certificates are only valid during certain hours, on certain things, and definitely don’t include tips or tax or alcohol, so pay attention. Do a quick google search before you order and you’re likely to find that you can get your $3-$10 gift certificate for up to 80% off.

Happy Eighth Birthday To The Frist! [Freebies]

There’s more than one occasion to celebrate today at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. Not only is it their 8th birthday (and we certainly hope it’s a happy one), but they’re giving Nashville the birthday present and offering free admission all day! So from 10am-5:30pm today, drop in them and give them your best wishes (and you might as well browse around a bit). Too bad they haven’t mentioned anything about birthday cake…

Bright & Early: Stuck With The Bill Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Though lots of folks are fans of the new convention center, they have a lot of concerns about who’s going to end up footing the bill. There’s been talk of paying for construction out of property taxes, but Mayor Dean is going on record to say that Nashville taxpayers shouldn’t have to be the ones paying for it. After Mayor Dean filed an amendment prohibiting the use of property taxes, Metro Finance Director Rich Riebeling told the Tennessean that they’re planning instead to target tourists with taxes and fees and if that doesn’t cover it, “we shouldn’t do the project.”
- Disease at Vandy. A Vanderbilt freshman was hospitalized last night with meningococcal bacterial meningitis, which is a highly contageous and life-threatening disease for which most of us are supposed to be vaccinated. So, Vandy folks, pay close attention to your school alerts and hope it doesn’t spread.
- House to vote on abortion bill. The Tennessee House will vote on an amendment today that would let voters sound off on greater restrictions for abortions. Supporters have been trying to pass the bill for years, but this is the furthest it’s ever gotten.
- Moby Teeth the Movie. Pith In The Wind brings us the actual video footage of Toby Keith’s now-famous ACM meltdown.
- Bits & pieces. Metro Schools claim they didn’t do anything wrong in the process of hiring at least two alleged sex offenders … Bread & Co. is doing the unthinkable and actually lowering the prices of their food … Two twin girls who were joined at the torso and shared a liver were separated successfully at Vandy yesterday.

Happy Hour: Who Would Jesus Sue?

- The family whose land almost became home to Bible Park USA in Rutherford County are now suing the pants off the county and county attorney for not approving the park and thus ruining the land deal. Team Rutherford County FTW! [Tennessean]
- This is seriously the creepiest picture of a probable sex offender we’ve ever seen, and it’s made even worse by the fact that it was taken from the dude’s own Myspace. [Tennessean]
- The source of the poison pistachios has been traced to a processing plant in California, who is obviously trying to kill us. [WTVF]
- Guns and booze may soon be reunited in the public sphere. Bring on the Kevlar Snuggies. [WTVF]
- Even the Scene is sticking up for the Tennessean reporter who caught the full brunt of Toby Keith’s wrath over an article published last week. The best part about this article is that Toby’s very bratty, very NSFW tirade is dictated in full. And it’s even more epic than we’d imagined! [Pith In The Wind]

It’s Tweet-Up Time: Twitterers, Unite

April in Tennessee means a few guaranteed things: Allergy season, a late freeze, and tornaders galore. And apparently it’s also tweet-up-season, because there are no fewer than three tweet ups happening in the coming week or two. So grab a few twittering friends and head down to connect some faces with avatars at whichever one fits your schedule. And for the anti-Twitter crowd among us (we know you’re out there), a tweet up is really just a cheesy name for a Twitter meet up.
Wednesday, April 8: Tweet Up At Aloft Hotel. 5pm-8pm at the Aloft Hotel in Cool Springs. Cash bar. Hosted by @spencesmith and @recreate.
Thursday, April 9: Tweet Up At Buffalo Billiards. 5:30pm-7:30pm at Buffalo Billiards downtown. A continuation of the tweet ups of olde, this one’s been quietly on the books for a while. @nashvillest will be there, and we’d love to see your shining faces. Hosted by @dbcotton.
Saturday, April 18: Viva Nashvegas Tweet Up. 7pm-9pm at @hotel_preston. Hosted by @leahjones and @amyguth.

Tomorrow’s Pick: “Running With Scissors” Guy Augusten Burroughs To Speak At Vandy

Most of us have read, seen, or at least heard of Augusten Burroughs’ 2001 memoir Running With Scissors which enjoyed a respectable four-year stint on the New York Times bestseller list. And tomorrow night, you’ve got the chance to catch him in person at Vandy’s Ingram Hall for a free reading, discussion, and book signing.
For a fourth-grade dropout, former foster kid, sexual abuse survivor, and recovering alcoholic, Burroughs has done alright for himself. Aside from Running With Scissors, he’s published four other memoirs chronicling his outrageously dysfunctional childhood and his journey in and out of alcoholism in a way that landed him a spot on Entertainment Weekly’s list of the 25 funniest people in America, twice. His first book, Sellevision, is also being adapted into a feature film (and we can only hope and pray they do a better job than they did with Running With Scissors.)
We won’t lie–we’ve been pretty partial to Burroughs for a few years now for the hope and hilarity he brings to the table with his memoirs. We’re also partial to the folks at the Brooks Fund, who will receive a portion of the book sale proceeds from the evening. A very special thanks to Lightning 100, the Nashville Scene, Davis-Kidd, NowPlayingNashville, and Vandy for making it happen.

The First Of Many: Nashville Lifestyles 2009 Best Restaurant Results

The results of yet another tell-us-your-favorite-restaurants survey are in, this time by Nashville Lifestyles. And you know, when all things are considered, both the readers and the critics did a pretty good job at picking out some of the best places around (though we’d like to think that vegetarians can find a more creative option than Whole Foods’ salad bar). But we know that everyone has an opinion, so tell us what you think about the Nashville Lifestyles 2009 Best Restaurants results – Are they legitimate, or are you horrified at PF Chang’s nomination for Best Chinese?

Bright & Early: The Upward Spiral Edition
Good morning, Nashville. In the latest effort to put an end to some of the shadiness in Metro Nashville Public Schools, Belmont is teaming up with the school system to give Masters-level students the chance to earn their degree while teaching in MNPS classrooms as part of the Nashville Teaching Fellows program. Of course, we expect (we hope) they’ll need to undergo an extensive background check in order to do so, but hey we’re all about bringing some change to Metro. Along with probably trimming down the payroll, the program aims to phase out some of the teaching faculty that apparently isn’t working out so well in favor of some fresh perspectives. And because not a whole lot of folks want to jump aboard a sinking ship, if you know what we mean.
- It’s the little things. The Metro Council is still trying to figure out how to fund our fancy new conference center that’s going up near the Country Music Hall of Fame. And in case you’ve forgotten what it looks like when you try to design a building incorporating the Parthenon, the rolling hills of Tennessee, the curves of a guitar, and instrument strings, here you go.
- Root, root, root for the home team. The Preds might actually meet their revenue goals after the home finale tonight against Chicago, meaning they will receive the NHL’s full revenue-sharing package. We’re not really sure what this means, but if it helps us keep our hockey team, then we’re all about it.
- Bits & pieces. Please don’t ever get drunk and ram your car through a day care fence, or anything for that matter … The Tennessean tries to make us feel better about our economic woes … The bill requiring driver’s license tests to only be given in English passed in the House yesterday … The FBI released a scary map of highway serial killings including a couple of cases in Tennessee.

Since We’re Not Snowed In: More Music Tuesday Edition

If you can manage to dig your way out of the mountains of snow that accumulated overnight (okay okay, so we actually haven’t seen any snow in Green Hills, but it sure sounded like a big deal) tonight, there are a few places that you may want to turn your attention. Because what’s a Tuesday night in Nashville without a bunch of options for great live music?
Ben Folds with Jukebox the Ghost at The Ryman. 7:30pm, $25.50-$45.50 (tickets). A rare hometown show for one Ben Folds, we snapped up the cheap tickets and are excited to see him for the first time in a very long time. According to uh, The Ryman’s Twitter, new tickets were released late yesterday, but it seems like plenty are still available.
The Vital Sign at The Five Spot. 8pm, free. Do you know why we are telling you to go to this show? We are telling you to go to this show because it is 100% legitimately sponsored by SNUGGIES, which means it’s going to be hilarious. And we know it’s going to be sponsored by Snuggies due to the large quantity of facebook updates we have received about it. Apparently, if we attend, we can potentially win a new designer leopard print Snuggie. OMG, y’all. Wear a Snuggie.
The Civil Wars, The Champion & His Burning Flame, Micah Tawlks & Joseph LeMay at the French Quarter Cafe. 7:30pm, $5. Do you know why we are telling you to go to this show? We are telling you to go to this show because we’re all about The Civil Wars’ one released song, “Falling,” which can be found on YouTube and ReverbNation (free download). It’s like magic!
