Happy Hour: They See Us Rollin’, They Hatin’

  • Because our site was broken for the better part of today, we couldn’t post things like the above photo which was taken by our new hero brandonvalentine in the Belmont neighborhood. That said, we’re realizing that we’ve finally outgrown our hosting (hooray!) and we’ll be upgrading tonight so we can be back in full force tomorrow… we hope.
  • A new bill went through a Senate committee today that would allow us to buy not one, not two, but FIVE cases of wine every single day from some other state and cart it back over the border, which is currently illegal. Though it seems like an awfully large missed revenue opportunity (*cough cough*), we do love our wine. Time to make some friends in Kentucky, just maybe not this guy? [Tennessean]
  • Looks like Bible Park USA is officially a no-go for Lebanon and Wilson County. As a parting gift, the developers issued a cute press release which someone should probably submit to PassiveAggressiveNotes right now. For our part, our hearts are beaming with pride for our Wilson County neighbors. [Nashville Is Talking]
  • We’re not sure about you, but somehow our lunch hours in the sun today didn’t quite cut it like an actual Spring Break would. [Tennessean]
  • Adios, Spring. You were nice while you lasted. :’( [WKRN]

FedEx Office Provides Free Resume Printing Today

FedEx Office (formerly known as Kinkos) is offering up to 25 free prints of your resume, today only. So stockpile those resumes, because you never know if you’re going to be next to join the unemployment line. Encouraging, right?

Bright & Early: All Sunshine And Rainbows Edition

Good morning, Nashville. When it comes to the TVA spewing their toxic ash everywhere, the federal Environmental Protection Agency says that help is on the way. Thanks to that coal ash disaster back in December, the EPA has decided to check out more than 300 ash pounds all across the country to make sure they won’t be “pulling a Kingston.” Though the folks at the TVA are in the process of stepping up their own regulation (ha, ha) the feds believe it’s time for some federal oversight to make sure that all of the country’s coal plants are doing it right. And in case you missed it last week, “problems were identified” at a fourth TVA ash pond in New Johnsonville.

Happy Hour: Spring Has Sprung

  • Remember that University of Tennessee kid who hacked Sarah Palin’s email only to find a lot of totally boring things back during the election? They just brought him up on three more charges. [Tennessean]
  • Something innovative is going on in Franklin which does not involve racist Obama waffles: If ever you’re running around out there and see some sort of subversive criminal activity, you can text your crime tips anonymously to TIP411. Apparently they’re the first in the country to try this out. [WTVF]
  • The kids in Metro Schools might not be able to read or pass standardized testing, but dang it, they’ll be able to cut a good record. (In all seriousness, their new recording studio does look pretty fun.) [WKRN]
  • West End Avenue will be getting some brand spankin’ new traffic lights over the next few weeks, but while they’re getting all prettified, you’ll probably want to find some alternate routes. [WKRN]
  • As is customary, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office will be out offering sober rides on St. Patrick’s Day next week, so don’t be the dummy who drives drunk. [Tennessean]

Photo Of The Day: March 9, 2008

Today’s photo comes to us from Malcolm MacGregor, taken on 21st Avenue near Vandy. Especially as the weather gets nicer, it definitely reminds us of some nighttime strolls in search of Ben & Jerry’s.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: Hopelessly Optimistic Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Some folks in South Nashville were kind of grossed out when the creek behind their home turned bright green last night. Though the Nashville Fire Department seems to think the “unidentified substance” in the water is some sort of pond dye or food coloring, locals are still concerned that it looks a little too much like antifreeze. And judging by the photos, we can’t say we blame them! We’re guessing someone will be out to test the water this morning and hopefully it’s harmless. Or if it isn’t, we blame the TVA.

Don’t Forget: Daylight Saving Tonight!

Set your clocks ahead an hour tonight, folks. Just do it! Daylight Saving Time officially begins at 2am Sunday, but unless you’re a serious night owl, don’t forget to change your clocks before bed. Happy (almost) spring!

Happy Hour: One Hump Or Two?

  • A rogue camel that escaped from a petting zoo in Dickson was found strolling around town today. In its defense, it was a pretty nice day for a walk! [Tennessee]
  • And holy crap, it’s like Christmas! We’re accepting all $4.5 billion of the stimulus money here in Tennessee, contrary to what we heard a few weeks ago. Now to figure out the whole money-management thing… [WTVF]
  • We guess the terrorists weren’t trying to get us with that dynamite that was discovered next to I-40 out by the airport this morning. It’s actually left over from a road-widening project and has been there for about two years. Whew. [WKRN]
  • Special props to the kids at MTSU who organized a sit-in on their president’s front lawn to protest the many budget- and major-cuts that were proposed this week. [Nashville Is Talking]

The Weekendist: Shortest Weekend Of The Year Edition

Yes, this weekend is the shortest of the year, since we’re getting a whole hour taken away from us this Saturday night. But over at the Nashvillest HQ we’re actually pretty excited about Daylight Savings, since it means that pretty soon, it might actually be light outside when we leave work every day! We’re willing to deal with a 54-hour weekend if that’s what it takes.

FRIDAY

  • 80′s Day. 12pm-8pm at the Green Hills Whole Foods Market. Um, we don’t know about you, but our curiosity often gets the better of us when it comes to things like 80′s Days at places like Whole Foods. We’re not sure how one can have 80′s themed food samples, but we are pretty excited about the paltry $2 charitable donation it will take to fire up the proverbial 80′s jukebox and have real Bon Jovi ringing through everyone’s ears. (via Bites.)
  • Blitzen Trapper with Alela Diane. 9pm at the Mercy Lounge. We were a little late on the Blitzen Trapper bandwagon, but ever since we saw them open for Iron & Wine a few months ago at The Ryman, we’ve been big fans. Tickets are $12 at the door.

SATURDAY

  • PodCamp Nashville. 9am-4pm at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School Of Management. Even if you’re not a podcaster, come down to PodCamp Nashville on Saturday and hang out with Nashville’s tech community. Here’s three reasons. #1: You will learn a lot. #2: It will be fun. #3: You will get to meet us.
  • CMT’s Can You Duet? Open Casting Call. 8am at the Wildhorse Saloon. Pretty self-explanatory, don’t you think? Hopefuls must be in line by 12pm to qualify. Meanwhile, we’ll be sneaking over during session breaks at PodCamp, because it’s bound to be entertaining.

SUNDAY

  • Joshua Radin with Meiko and Jesse Harris. 8pm at the Exit/In. We’ve managed to miss each of these great artists every time they’ve passed through town, and we’re not letting the chance slip away again. Tickets are $15 in advance or $17 (or $18?) at the door. Joshua Radin’s new CD Simple Times is $1.99 on Amazon MP3, which is a pretty low-cost investment for some new tunes.
  • Sugar Is Art Gallery. 12pm at the Cannery Ballroom. Celebrate the art of sugar? Sign us up! Tickets are $20 or $15 each if you buy two.
  • 2009 Nashville Predators Disco Ball. 6pm at Club 501. Individual tickets go for a cool $250, but why stop there? For only $10,000, you and 15 of your closest friends can choose which Predators player you want to sit with, appear in the Disco Ball video shown at the event, and much, much more. We still can’t decide if we want to drop our pocket change on the Disco Ball or Camp Nashville this year…

Bright & Early: Easy Down The Road Edition

Good morning, Nashville. In honor of CRS this week, we point you to a new study by the Country Music Association that aimed to find out exactly what kinds of folks are listening to country music. Ultimately they discovered that although predominanly female and rural, it’s a pretty diverse group spanning many ages and income brackets. However, they also figured out that their audience is mostly white, which has predictably set off a firestorm of comments on the Tennessean article that will probably provide at least a few hours of entertainment for this dreary-looking Friday morning. TGIF!
