Happy Hour: Rain, Snow, Sleet, Or Hail
- Reviews of today’s winter storm include “puny” and “a bust.” Yep, that about sums it up! [WZTV]
- In case you haven’t heard, Jack White is forming a new band called The Dead Weather and opening an office here in Nashville that’ll be home to his new record label, vinyl store, photo studio, dark room, and performance stage. We’re just bummed because he obvs forgot to throw in a coffee shop, swimming pool, burlesque lounge, rock climbing wall, and paint-your-own-pottery studio. (Thanks to all who sent the tip!) [Metromix Nashville]
- The sicko that shot up Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist church in Knoxville last year still maintains he was doing the world a favor. [WZTV]
- The Senate passed a bill today banning city and county government to establish living wages for employees of contractors because we’re, uh, too broke to pay people enough to actually live on. [Pith In The Wind]
- But the state did manage to approve a $25 increase for weekly unemployment checks using some of that stimulus money we’ve been hearing about. [WTVF]
- Albert Haynesworth can get away from the Titans, but his reckless driving charges for an accident that crippled a young man certainly won’t go away. Today he was charged with two misdemeanors that might set him back, oh, $550 and six months in jail? That’ll hurt. [WSMV]

Photo Of The Day: March 12, 2009

Now, this is what we like to see! New contributor que.sera caught this series of action shots during that epic 8-0 massacre against our arch-nemesis, the Detroit Red Wings. The series captures Jerred Smithson smashing Brad Stuart into the wall with great force, which was only one of many beautiful moments that we hope will be immortalized on the internets for years to come.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Move Over Jessica Simpson; Jamie Lynn Spears Is Coming To Town

We thought we’d heard it all after Bon Jovi, Kid Rock, Jessica Simpson, and even Snoop Dogg started cranking out the country tunes in Nashville. But the latest news from E! Online is that Jamie Lynn Spears, Britney Spears’ mini-me, has been in town recording some demos for her new country album. Jamie Lynn Spears is known for her leading role on Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101, and received a lot of attention last year upon becoming a teenage mother, yet has never pursued music as a career (so we can’t really speculate on this quite yet). We’re now taking bets on who the next random celebrity to show up to record some country hits in Nashville will be.

Coldplay Announces June 6 Nashville Show

It has been called to our attention that Coldplay has added a Nashville date at the Sommet Center on June 6. Tickets go on sale on the 21st of this month, and will likely be outrageously priced, but included in the ticket price is the opportunity to see Chris Martin act all weird, so it’s totes worth it, right? Actually, we caught Coldplay when they played the Starwood (RIP) several years back, and it was a pretty incredible live show, even for those who weren’t huge fans. We’ll fill you in if we hear anything about presales, but for now, mark your calendars for the 21st. Thanks to Rachel A. for the tip!
UPDATE 3/18 11:20AM: Presale information will be available from Lightning 100 at 10am on Friday. Enjoy, and thanks to Erin A. for the tip!

Bright & Early: Gloomy Weather For A Gloomy Day Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Yesterday, the State of Tennessee received a special and kind-of-sad delivery from Miami containing the giant American flag that flew over Ground Zero after 9/11. Since it first left New York, the flag has been making the rounds all over the world to honor soldiers who have been killed in the war. And this time it’s our turn after a Tennessee National Guardsman and a lieutenant from the Sequatchie County Sheriff’s Office were killed in Iraq last month. If you’re downtown today, you can catch the flag flying over the Tennessee State Capitol.
- New jobs. You know it’s bad when even the minimum-wage summer jobs aren’t hiring. Luckily we may be in line for 12,000 summer jobs for low-income teens, except they’ll be at state parks and government offices which sounds like a boring way to spend the summer. But hey, it pays the bills.
- Abortion bill advances. A controversial bill limiting abortion access passed in the Tennessee Senate yesterday. Even if it passes this year, it would also have to pass a few more rounds before being placed on the ballot in 2014.
- Bits & pieces. In case you haven’t been outside today, it’s super-nasty … A Dickson County man stole a school bus to tow his real car out of the ditch … State legislators are finding new ways to try and loosen gun regulations … When everyone on the planet gets laid off, they apparently go out and buy suits.

Happy Hour: Burnin’ Up 4 U
- The Jonas Brothers (you know, the band with that kid who dumped Taylor Swift by 27-second phone call) announced their new tour dates that include the Sommet Center on August 25th. How excited are we right now!? Okay, we’re really not that excited. [WKRN]
- Never one to be left behind in this recession, a bartender at Ombi on Elliston went out on a limb and bought the whole restaurant from his employers after they said they were going to have to sell or shut things down. We’ve gotta admire a man with commitment, so if you find yourself out and about and looking for a place to eat, keep Ombi on your short list. [WKRN]
- With such gloom and doom and economic destruction in the headlines these days, WKRN is looking for some happy recession stories. You know, stories that get us all teary-eyed and optimistic. Submit yours over at Nashville Is Talking. [Nashville Is Talking]
- While Metro is probably having to cut $15M and more than 200 positions from the school system, they’re still paying someone who quit eight weeks ago because payroll didn’t get the memo. [WSMV]
- Dell is laying off an undisclosed amount of people from undisclosed offices in Middle Tennessee, and since we know a few of you guys work there, please know we’ve got our fingers crossed for you! [Nashville Business Journal]

Man Up, USA! [Mixed Reviews By People Who Don't Live Here]

The internets were buzzing last week with the news that Nashville had been dubbed America’s Manliest City… As in, #1 Manliest City In The Entire United States. After spending several years on Belmont University’s campus, we find that pretty hard to believe, but hey! Whatever works. NASCAR-lovin’, BBQ-eatin’, monster-truck-rally-goin’, huntin’-n-fishin’ Nashvillians represent! Thanks to all of our tipsters who sent this in!
In other Mixed Reviews news, Nashville ranked #79 in yet another Best Places To Live (& Launch) poll. These are a dime a dozen, but it’s still nice to know that we make the cut each time. Thanks to our Twitter friend Llamaboi for the tip!

Carmike Cuts Us A Break: New Discount Theater, $1 Popcorn And Drinks

Carmike Cinemas is starting a new program, wherein Tuesday nights are dubbed Stimulus Nights and everyone gets popcorn & drinks for $1! We hadn’t realized how expensive movie food had gotten until we accidentally shelled out $11.50 for some nachos and a small drink the other day. We would usually just abstain from movie food, but for a buck, a giant tub of greasy popcorn couldn’t hurt! via Consumerist.
And in even better news, we’ve finally got ourselves a discount movie theater! Carmike is converting its Hickory Hollow 8 (yeah, Hickory Hollow is gross, we know) location to a $1.50 movie theater, and we couldn’t be more excited. But we hope you weren’t too attached to their Madison and Antioch locations, because they’ve been put up for sale. Bye bye, $9 movies and $11.50 snacks! For the grand total of $3.50, we can catch a flick, fill up our bellies on chemicals (on Tuesdays, at least), and dodge some bullets! via The Tennessean.
Will new discount prices get you to the movies more often?

Bright & Early: Clouds On The Horizon Edition
Good morning, Nashville. So how about the weather this morning? We hope you had a chance to get outside and enjoy the 80-degree goodness yesterday because it looks like the next few days are going to be cold and soggy. And as fun as snow would be two days after the trees started blooming, we feel pretty lucky that Davidson County isn’t one of the 19 counties in Tennessee with a winter storm watch looming. Either way, bundle up out there and stay warm!
- We need help. No wonder none of us can find jobs! According to a study by Manpower employment agency, only 8% of the employers in Middle Tennessee would even think about hiring right now, and that’s a full 7 less than the rest of the country.
- More bacon talk. For lack of any other significant news this morning, we’d like to point you back to the letter from the Lady Who Hates Bacon that appeared in the Tennessean yesterday, because the comments have only gotten better. And if you’re bored today, we fully encourage you to jump in.
- Bits & pieces. Some kids out in Murfreesboro are learning all about racial segregation … Folks in Williamson County are all up in arms about a new Verizon cell phone tower that gives Nolensville better coverage … The recession might actually work out well for sports fans around town … The first stimulus money has made its way to Tennessee to the United Neighborhood Health Services right here in Nashville.
