Pick O’ The Night: Our Homeless Get Crafty
It’s not exactly the Frist, but this is definitely an art show you won’t want to miss. The Campus for Human Development’s Room In The Inn program and Belmont University are coming together to show the community a different side of Nashville’s homeless population by showing off some of their original artwork at Belmont’s Leu Center for the Visual Arts. Tonight’s exhibition features the work of the Campus’ Odyssey program participants who are working hard to overcome addiction, abuse, and other deep-rooted issues that contribute to chronic homelessness. The event is free (and there’s free food!) and open to the public, runs from 6:30pm-8pm, and will also feature a silent auction to benefit the Room In The Inn’s art program. And even if you can’t make it, be sure to check out the Campus’ volunteer page to find other ways you can help.

Tonight: The Nashville 9 Concert & Premiere

We heard about The Nashville 9 back in November, when a bunch of local musicians hung out for 9 days creating… something. Good thing they’ve written it out for us, because they say it better than we ever could:
In the first nine days of November 2008, four longtime friends undertook an ambitious project that explored storytelling, the artistic process, and the Nashville, Tennessee community. They called it The Nashville 9. Assisted by a grassroots collective of Nashville cast, crew and musicians, the foursome worked in frenetic 24-hour cycles to turn Nashvillians’ freshly told stories into written songs and scenes that were immediately recorded and filmed. Each day, one story sparked one song and one scene. The result after nine days: an album featuring the nine songs recorded by different Nashville artists and producers, and a short film comprising the nine scenes shot at various Nashville locations. The album and short film will premiere on March 19 at the Belcourt Theatre.
So there you have it. The premiere screening of the short film, coupled with a performance by the friends in The Nashville 9 (The Champion and His Burning Flame, Michael Logen, Kindercastle and Jaclyn James with special guest Plumb) is tonight (6:30pm) at the Belcourt, and tickets are $20. This is going to be one of those only-in-Nashville moments, and we encourage you to check it out.

Photo Of The Day: March 19, 2009
We get tons of pedestrian bridge photos on the Flickr pool (because let’s face it–it’s pretty darn photogenic), but occasionally we hit one that really sets itself apart. Not only do we dig the weird angle and the sunset colors, but we also like the creepiness factor of that new highrise looming in the background. Thanks to niseag03 for the submission!
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Recession Aggression: Take It Out On Your Pillow

Does the idea of beating up total strangers get you going? This weekend, if you’ve got nothing better to do (and maybe even if you DO have something better to do), head over to Centennial Park, where – at latest superofficialFacebookcount – almost 800 people have RSVPed to beat each other silly… With pillows. We missed the first giant pillow fight last September, but from the looks of the videos and photos, it was pretty intense.
Check the Facebook event for more details. Show up with a pillow a little before 6pm on Sunday, March 22, at Centennial park in front of the Parthenon. Just look for the 800 people with pillows.
UPDATE [3/20, 2pm]: Metro PD has pulled the plug on the pillow fight because the organizers didn’t have a permit, so don’t show up unless you want to be escorted out by Metro’s finest. :(

Bright & Early: Everybody Hates Taxes Edition
Good morning, Nashville. As much as we love our Preds, we can’t help but get a little bit bummed out when we hear that they could owe us as much as $400,000 in ticket taxes they, um, forgot to pay. Both city and team officials are still working on sorting out the mess, but it looks like the problem started when the new lease was being drafted in November 2007. So far, neither side is offering a real explanation until they sift through the investigation.
- Something stinks. City officials are testing the air quality in Franklin after residents started complaining that certain parts of the city smell pretty gross. Though we’ve certainly got our own Pockets Of Stink to worry about in Nashville, theirs do sound a little more toxic.
- Not-so-free hugs. Tennessee Women’s Political Caucus member Kim McMillan is resorting to some creative-and-kind-of-awkward fundraising methods to raise money for her gubernatorial bid in 2010. And by “kind of awkward” we mean that she’s selling her hugs for $1 apiece. Which… is weird.
- Bits & pieces. Leave it to Rep. Stacey Campfield to try to ban schools from discussing homosexuality … Former Rep. Nathan Vaughn is suing the Ethics Commission over a ruling they made about a complaint he filed against Rep. Jason “Not The Speaker” Mumpower … It’s almost like Governor Phil wants our kids to graduate and be successful or something … We’re thanking our lucky stars that we don’t live in Perry County, TN where the unemployment rate is 27 %.

Happy Hour: One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s ________
- We can all probably take something away from the fact that Franklin just saved themselves $55K with a friggin’ compost pile. [WSMV]
- The University of the South in Chattanooga Sewanee, TN has decided to ditch SAT and ACT scores in favor of other standardized testing scores, which might have saved us a lot of agony in high school. [Tennessean]
- A chemical leak at Rock City Machine on Third Ave. this morning sent one employee to the hospital. [WSMV]
- The Nashville Game Company found a way to bail out its own business–creating a Barack Obama jigsaw puzzle. [WKRN]
- Rep. G.A. Hardaway (D-Memphis) is aiming to lower sales tax by one percent, which would be awesome but would also probably cost the state a few million dollars it doesn’t have right now.” [WTVF]

Bright & Early: Drip, Drip, Drip Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Ready for another utility bill hike? The Metro Council signed off on a rate increase for our water & sewer service, leaving us looking at a 7.8% rate hike every month, starting in May. Now this won’t pack a huge punch on our $9.64 monthly bill, but according to WKRN, the average customer can expect to see about a $3.76 increase on their bill. But wait! WTVF tells us that it’s a $6.76 increase! Looks like they automatically factored in the $3 monthly stormwater fee that also passed (but doesn’t start until July). Time to fix those leaky faucets!
- Being the Volunteer State and all, it’s always good news to hear that more folks are stepping up to the plate to, well, volunteer. And it seems that all it took was a few million people being unemployed and bored!
- We really thought that all the school rezoning/resegregation controversy was over a year ago, but apparently it’s just getting started. With the plan expected to take effect next school year, the NAACP is stepping up their game by meeting with school board officials and trying to help affected families understand what’s going on.
- Bits & pieces. We can always appreciate a creative protest … A new piece of legislation tries to ban a few obvious gang activities … A Valentine card that had been lost in The Great USPS Abyss for 11 years was finally delivered to a Johnson City woman … TSU is optimistic about their future at Bells Bend.

Happy Hour: Sometimes We Celebrate The Wrong Holiday

- Maybe it’s the spring fever talking, but something about multiple Clarksville residents calling in to report a deer running around with a plastic pumpkin stuck on its head sends us into fits of giggles today (click-worthy for the picture.) [WSMV]
- Oh, and also, KATE FROM LOST has been in town for the past few days, rumored to be eating sushi in Cummins Station with Ben Folds and then lurking around Fido. Sometimes we hate that we have day jobs. [Twitter]
- To all the guys out there: If vasectomies are your thing, the State of Tennessee certainly isn’t going to stand in your way. [WTVF]
- We realize that this is too little too late, but if you’re even thinking of going near 2nd Ave. tonight for anything other than St. Patty’s Day festivities, for the love of all things holy, don’t! [WTVF]
- If you are engaging in one of those Illicit Office Pools during March Madness, Metro PD will find you out and destroy you. [WKRN]

Urban Outfitters Grand Opening March 26 (Finally)

Looks like we were right about Urban Outfitters’ grand opening on March 26 including a performance by Will Hoge. This official-ish looking graphic proves it! Anyway, doesn’t look like much else is happening that day, but we might drop by at 6:30pm to see Will Hoge play and point and laugh at all the hipsters. Just kidding, we <3 Urban Outfitters just as much as the next person! And we love that they’re collecting cans for Second Harvest Food Bank. via Post Business.
