Happy Hour: Hillbilly Hoedown

  • We’ve been calling this one for a while, but now the research confirms it: Listening to country music makes you dumb. [Pith In The Wind]
  • Three people, ages 18-21, were arrested for the brutal attack of a 62-year old man in the Green Hills Mall parking garage that landed him in the Vanderbilt Medical Center in critical condition. [WSMV]
  • We have to admit we didn’t even know this show was still around (except, you know, in Slumdog Millionaire), but a guy from Nashville will be on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire tomorrow night. [Tennessean]
  • And speaking of Nashvillians on teevee, Taylor Swift will be guest-starring on CSI tonight! [WTVF]
  • Putnam and Humphrey counties have both closed schools due to illness this week. Hello, influenza! [WSMV]

Photo Of The Day (Is Back): March 5, 2008

Back when we first started things up around here, we had a Photo of the Day feature where we would dig through our Nashvillest Flickr pool and pick out one reader-submitted shot to spotlight on the blog each day, ranging from breathtaking to just plain weird. We loved the way you guys were able to capture parts of the city we’d never seen before, and we loved showcasing the ridiculous amount of talent (like today’s pick–a beautiful skyline capture by edwin.donnelly)  we have here in Music City. Submissions slowed down, though, and we put the feature on hiatus. But the good news is that we’re bringing it back!

Interested in submitting? Head over to the Flickr and start tossing your best photos into the pool. We’ve also been known to grab others and pair them along with ours posts, so if you’re interested in helping us out and want to see your work featured on the site, we’d love to have you!

Bright & Early: Outside Looking In Edition

Good morning, Nashville. The federal Government Accountability Office published a new report this week taking a good, hard look at the local immigration enforcement programs across the country including the one in Davidson County. Though Nashville’s 287(g) program resulted in the deportation of around 3,000 undocumented immigrants, the report questions whether it’s actually doing what it was intended to do–target and remove violent criminals. Of these folks, almost half were picked up on traffic stops and 81% were only charged with misdemeanors. Supporters of the program argue that if they’re illegal, then they should be shipped out. The report, however, maintains that this kind of practice “wastes valuable resources and clogs federal detention centers, limiting expensive bed space.”
