Happy Hour: Great Coffeehouse Showdown

  • Have you sounded off on your favorite coffee shops? So far Ugly Mugs has taken the lead, but CREMA is rallying back! [Yours Truly]
  • If you’re hanging around Belmont tonight (we’re talking to you, seniors who need convo credit!), catch Nashvillest editor Morgan Levy on a panel about the rights, rules, and realities of social media. [Belmont New Century Journalism]
  • We’re not sure whether this is good news or bad news, but despite the economy being in crapper, Tennessee lottery sales were through the roof last month. [WZTV]
  • Are you one of the 50,000 Nashvillians running around jobless? The Nashville Zoo is hiring! And they have a really cute Tweeting meerkat! [WTVF]
  • Not exactly a banner week for MTSU. First, there’s the $19 million in budget cuts and then the 48 majors that might be eliminated. Yikes! [WTVF & Tennessean]
  • Governor Phil clearly thinks that the state employees don’t get out enough. [WTVF]

What's your favorite coffee shop in town?

Hypothetically speaking, if today had been a snow day, we’d probably be lurking around at CREMA or Ugly Mugs, sipping a warm beverage and blogging after a refreshing full night of sleep (hey, we can dream, can’t we?). We’re always sort of jealous of those freelancer folks who can sit around at coffee shops all day every day if they want, since coffee shops are some of our favorite places to be. Caffeine and internet, two of the greatest inventions of all time – What’s not to like?

Nate News has a great post about the best coffee shops in Nashville to write at, and Bites is on the search for the perfect americano. What’s your favorite coffee shop in town, and why?

Why Not Wine: Where’s Our Two Buck Chuck?

We admit it, we felt the sting of Tennessee’s current alcohol legislation a little harsher than usual when Trader Joe’s opened across the street from the Nashvillest HQ, painfully vacant of that 8th-wonder-of-the-world, Two Buck Chuck, and we know that many of our readers felt the same bitter pain. While it’s fun to sit around and whine about it on the internet, there are some other options that are more fun AND productive. Today is Red White and Food Blog Day, so if you’re passionate about bringing wine to grocery stores in Tennessee, jump on board! Red White and Food has a bunch of fun things happening on ye olde internets, and they make it easy to get involved in the campaign.

Of course, we know that not everyone thinks that wine in grocery stores is a good idea. Check out the major opposition and make your own call. And even if legislation changes to allow wine into grocery stores, we always encourage our readers to support local businesses. The experts at the Wine Shoppe At Green Hills and Grace’s Plaza Wine & Spirits are our favorites, and they can sure pick out a heckuva bottle of wine. No grocery store in town could ever fill that special wine-y place in our hearts quite like they do.

Truck Comes Complete With Two Strips Of Rawhide [Gems From The Nashville Craigslist]

Dealerships take note, THIS is how you sell a truck. (Disclaimer: May be mildly offensive to some, but nothing that will make your eyes bleed.) Thanks to Nathan T. for the tip!

1979 Chevy Truck!! OH MY GOD! THIS TRUCK IS AWESOME! – $6000 (EAST NASHVILLE)

OK, let me start off by saying this Silverado is only available for purchase by the manliest of men (or women). My friend, if it was possible for a vehicle to sprout chest hair and a five o’clock shadow, this Brute of a Chevy would look like Tom Selleck. It is just that manly.

It was never intended to drive to the mall so you can pick up that adorable shirt at Abercrombie & Fitch that you had your eye on. It wasn’t meant to transport you to yoga class or Linens & Things. No, that’s what your Prius is for. If that’s the kind of truck you’re looking for, then just do us all a favor and stop reading right now. I mean it. Just stop.

Bright & Early: Hat Tricks & Drunk Birds Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re pretty sure we could hear the Preds fans screaming all over city on Saturday after the epic 8-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. It was a night of firsts for our Preds: First win by 8 goals, first time they’ve scored 5 goals in the first period (including the first 4 in 5:03, which is the fastest of any home game), and the last 3 goals in 1:24–also the fastest of any home game. And we can’t forget Jason Arnott, who scored the goals #5, #6, and #8 for the Preds’ first hat trick of the year. Clearly they were feeling pretty good on Saturday night (see the above photo wherein Shea Weber tries to rip off the head of some unfortunate Red Wing) and we hope, hope, hope they can keep it up.
