Happy Hour: Gotta Watch Those Georgians

  • Sometimes we fear that the Federal Government or The State Of Georgia will swallow up our state and take away our ability to be, well, Tennessee. Thankfully state Rep. Susan Lynn is trying to pass a resolution that will remind everyone that the 10th Amendment is serious for real. [Pith In The Wind]
  • Creepy Oak Ridge is getting $755M from the federal government to clean up all their nuclear weaponry stuff leftover from the Manhattan Project. This, of course, means a bunch of new jobs for anyone who loves to play with radiation. [Tennessean]
  • Memo to all the smokers out there: Cigarettes will go up 62 cents a pack tomorrow, so you better stock up. Or start buying those little patch things so you can kick the habit altogether. [WKRN]
  • According to our fancy new report card, Tennessee didn’t exactly pass the infrastructure test with flying colors. [WSMV]
  • MTSU is getting hi-tech, but we still think the incoming freshmen will look pretty silly with headphones and self-guided mp3 campus tours. [WSMV]
  • The icing on Metro Schools’ cake: They just asked three employees, including an HR director, to resign following the hiring of an individual who was under investigation by another school system [WTVF]

Even More Miley (Can You Handle This?)

Nashvillians, duck and cover – Miley Cyrus will be appearing, like, forreal, in the flesh, at the Green Hills Davis-Kidd bookstore on April 9 (which, in case you weren’t keeping track, is just a mere handful of days away). She will signing copies of her new memoir, Miles To Go, and a ticket into the signing will cost you $25 (in addition to the $10-25 Davis-Kidd Gives Back Program membership fee)! What a steal!

Now, you may be surprised to learn that when tickets first went on sale, they only sold 50 of ‘em. We don’t care enough to call to find out if they’re any closer to selling out now, but standby tickets will be available in the event that it does.

Ever so conveniently, Miley and her daddy will be appearing at the Hannah Montana movie premiere in Green Hills the same evening, but you can’t get in. Oh well!

Photo Of The Day: March 31, 2009

In the midst of the dreary-looking weather outside, we couldn’t possibly pass up this vivid tulip-y shot by pr9000!

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: Happy Birthday, Al Gore Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We were trying to ignore the whole Al Gore Earth Hour saga, but in honor of his birthday today, we’ll give you the rundown. In case you’ve missed it, Drew Johnson, head of libertarian thinktank Tennessee Center for Policy Research, went lurking around Al’s mansion in Bellevue Belle Meade during Earth Hour to make sure the lights were off. While the lights inside seemed to be off minus a few TVs and computer monitors, they apparently left some giant flood lights on in the front yard. Drew did what any self-respecting savvy youth would do and snapped some photos, which he then published on Facebook with a long note. Word got around, Al’s spokeswoman said that Drew was lying, somehow this all ended up on national news, and now Drew is challenging the former Vice President of the United States to a Facebook fight. We couldn’t make this stuff up.

Happy Hour: Where In The World Is Jack?

  • We can all breathe a big sigh of relief, for the stolen truck carrying A Whole Lot Of Jack Daniel’s has been recovered. But wait, they still haven’t found the actual trailer containing the booze. [WKRN]
  • Not that anyone will remember this by the time August rolls around, but the Titans’ preseason TV schedule is now up for the taking. [Tennessean]
  • In case you’ve been putting off renewing your burglar alarm permit, Wednesday is the deadline or else you’ll be on your own to fend off those burglars. [Tennessean]
  • TVA officials have to face the music once again tomorrow as they’re slated to appear before the Congressional Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment to continue trying to explain their spill. [Tennessean]
  • Meanwhile, they’re praying for rain. [WZTV]

Photo Of The Day: March 30, 2009

With all of the tornado action and nasty weather this weekend, we’re thrilled to see that something pretty came out of it. Somegeekintn captured this beautiful double rainbow after a rain shower. We had to squint pretty hard to see the second rainbow, but you can see it near the top right corner of the shot.

Bright & Early: Gettin’ Our Green On Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Taking a look at some of the before and after photos of Earth Hour Nashville, we’d say that our city had a whole lot to be proud of this weekend, even if Nashville Gifts decided to be a stick in the mud and Al Gore couldn’t manage to turn off his giant flood lights. But speaking of less-than-flattering environmental things, the TVA is taking some time out to hold a community open house today to answer folks’ questions about the Kingston cleanup efforts which we feel confident will attract every protester within a 200-mile radius. Oi.

    Happy Hour: Why Not Wine?

    • State Sen. Doug Overbey (D-Maryville) is probably our hero. His bill that would allow us to cart lots of wine over the border is set to be voted on by the Senate on Monday. [WKRN]
    • Four Tennessee veterans tested positive for Hepatitis B, and six for Hepatitis C after a couple of VA hospitals accidentally exposed patients to contaminated hospital equipment. [WTVF]
    • For some reason, Lowe’s opened a brand new store on Dickerson Pike and hired almost 200 folks to staff it. Yay for jobs? [WKRN]
    • More than 800,000 Tennesseans don’t have health insurance. [WKRN]
    • Just a couple of weeks after some dynamite was discovered out by the airport, someone found a hand grenade in the middle of the road in Clarksville. [WSMV]
    • News flash: The recession also hurts families who were broke before it all started, rather than just rich people. Who knew! [WKRN]

It’s Time For Earth Hour, Nashville!

When we first heard that Nashville was one of this year’s Earth Hour flagship cities back in December, March 28 seemed pretty far away. Surprise surprise, it’s here, and Nashville will be putting on quite a show… or lack thereof. For one hour tomorrow night, lights will go out at more than 250 key buildings throughout the city. Universities and schools, government buildings and Nashville landmarks, office complexes and neon signs downtown will all be participating, and thousands of Nashville residents will turn off the lights in their own homes as well. But we don’t expect you to sit in the dark in your house for an hour! Earth Hour is a great opportunity to take part in the community. So switch off your lights from 8:30-9:30pm tomorrow and head downtown for some Earth Hour fun! Here’s an extensive list of Earth Hour events, and our picks below:

      • Official Nashville Earth Hour Event. Count down with the mayor in the Sommet Center Plaza. There will be a live performance by Jo Dee Messina, and we’ll watch the city go dark at 8:30pm. The event begins at 7:30pm and is free!
      • Team Green Flashlight Hike. Begins at 8pm at LP Field (Woodland St. side). Free & open to the public!
      • Earth Hour Viewing Party at Drinkhaus. Gather at Drinkhaus, one of our favorite new coffee shops, and sip-n-snack your way through Earth Hour! Watch the city go dark from Germantown. Free!
      • Bongo Java Movie Night/Birthday/Earth Hour Celebration. We love how clever this is. Watch 16 Candles for Bongo Java’s 16th birthday by candlelight for Earth Hour! And it’s… free!
      • Star Party at the Adventure Science Center. Gather in front of the Adventure Science Center to watch downtown go dark and do some serious stargazing. Free & open to the public.
      • Belmont Unplugged. Celebrate with free live music & food at Belmont University from 7:30pm-9:30pm. Belmont will also be accepting electronics for recycling.
