This Just In: Ben Folds At The Ryman April 7

From the looks of things, one of our favorite hometown heroes, Mr. Ben Folds himself, will finally be returning to play another show in Nashville (that isn’t at the Schermerhorn, as awesome as that was). The Nashville Convention & Visitor’s Bureau announced the April 7 show today on their Twitter account, and tickets will be going on sale next Friday, February 27. The date isn’t on The Ryman’s site, nor is it on Ticketmaster, so we suppose that Visit Music City could be leading us wrong… But for the love of all things holy, we sure hope not.

We’ll report back when we learn more about ticket prices and if there will be a presale or not. 2009 is shaping up to be a great year at The Ryman (and look! They’ve discovered Twitter too)!

UPDATE 2/19: Show confirmed by The Ryman. Lightning 100 will have an internet presale. Stay tuned to their Twitter/website for more details.

Coming Up: PodCamp Nashville 2009

Seems like we just got through BarCamp (wait, that was really last October?) and now it’s time for PodCamp… Not that we’re complaining! We love having something tech-y to get us through each season. PodCamp 2009 is “Nashville’s ‘un’conference event for podcasters and listeners, bloggers and readers, and anyone interested in new media.” Does that sound like you? Well then, you’ll be happy to know a few things.

1. It’s free. That’s right, free.
2. It’s soon. March 7, to be exact. In case you haven’t been keeping track, March 7 is precisely 2 weeks and some change away.
3. It’s going to be great. From 9am-4pm (and social events after!) at the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management, PodCamp Nashville attendees will be attending a variety of educational, informative and fun sessions about topics ranging from blogging to podcasting to social networking and beyond.

So register now before it fills up, and join the conversation on Twitter to stay in the loop. Visit the PodCamp Nashville 2009 site for additional details. See you there!

Bright & Early: Back To Square One

Good morning, Nashville. We hate to keep harping on the Kingston ash spill, but the more we read about it, the more it blows our minds. While testifying before an environmental committee at the state legislature yesterday, TVA prez Tom Kilgore reiterated that the billion-gallon spill covered nearly 300 acres of land and was probably enough to lay 11 tons of ash on each acre. He said that they were doing their best to get it cleaned up, especially from the river, but they can’t seem to cut through all the Federal red tape. He then admitted that the ash that had already moved downriver would probably never be captured. The one bit of silver lining is that our rates supposedly won’t be affected by the $800M+ cleanup effort. But the money has to come from somewhere, right?

  • No Idol for us. The first three American Idol finalists were chosen last night and we’re a little sad to report that neither of the Nashvillians made the cut. Fortunately, there’s still the hope of the wildcard.
  • Auto bailout trouble. Moody’s Investor Service has set the chances of GM and Chrysler filing for bankruptcy at 70% despite the $17.4B in loans they’ve gotten already from the Feds. If they can’t shape up by March 31, the Treasury Department can apparently require that the funds be used to finance the bankruptcy filing. If that happens, job losses could be in the millions.
  • Bits & pieces. TSU and three of its professors are being sued for allegedly discriminating against white students … The Preds lost to the Red Wings 6-2 last night despite the efforts of Sully, who we can all agree we’re happy to have back … President Obama’s plan to reduce foreclosures could bail out a lot of Nashvillians … The beginning of the end for analog television managed to go on without a riot.

Happy Hour: Yeah, So We Wish We Could Run A Marathon

  • Big changes in store for this year’s Country Music Marathon. Not only are they tweaking your course, jacking up your registration prices, and embarrassing all you half-marathon runners by making you wear bright red shirts, but they’re also changing the t-shirts to synthetic materials instead of cotton. Yikes! (Alright, so it really isn’t that bad and the synthetic shirts are pretty neat.) [Tennessean]
  • Nashville’s foreign-born population has grown by almost 50% from 2000 to 2007 according to a new Census report. Who knew? [Tennessean]
  • On a somewhat related note, the Metro Council meeting last night got about as dramatic as, well, a Metro Council meeting can get courtesy of one Mr. Eric Crafton. [City Paper]
  • UT president John Petersen tendered his resignation today, saying that he’s decided he’s ready to move on. And can you blame him with the whole no-money-for-higher-ed quandary? [WTVF]

Bright & Early: No Cars Go Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Cars seem to be the name of the game this morning with GM looking to cut the Hummer brand (proving that there is a God) & phase out Saturns within the next few months. And as happy as we would be to never see a Hummer again in our lives, this means that a lot of folks at the GM plant in Spring Hill could be out of a job–again. Meanwhile, Nissan is talking up the electric car they plan to produce right here in Tennessee next year, which has the rest of the country scratching its head. We are, after all, the “land of possum crackle and twangin’ guitars.” Eh, they’re just jealous.

Happy Hour: Who’s Your American Idol?

  • If you’re the American Idol-watching type (we know you’re out there), be on the lookout for Nashvillian and Belmont alum Ricky Braddy to compete tonight. Good luck, Ricky! [Tennessean]
  • Congrats to the Gulch, which somehow ended up on the list for “LEED for Neighborhood Development” certifications, making them the first neighborhood in the South to get such an honor. This basically means that they’re really good at being green! [Nashville Is Talking]
  • Not that we’ve ever bragged about having the brightest criminals here in Tennessee, but this one takes the cake: An inmate escaped over the weekend, got lost in the woods, and then called 911. [WSMV]
  • A songwriter is suing Rascal Flatts for copyright violation over the song “No Reins,” which he claims is a little too close to a song he once wrote for… Pat Benetar? [WSMV]
  • Construction workers renovating a house on 15th Avenue North met an unpleasant surprise this morning when they discovered a woman’s dead body stuffed into a crawl space. [WKRN]

Is There A Doctor In The House? [We Love Dolly]

Congratulations to Dolly Parton for getting way farther in school than we probably will! Earlier today, UT-Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek sent out this email notifying students and faculty that Dolly is in line to receive an Honorary doctoral degree in Humane and Musical Letters:

To: UT Knoxville Faculty, Staff and Students
From: Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek
Subject: Dolly Parton to Receive Honorary Doctorate

I’m writing to let you know about an important moment in the life of our university that will take place this spring, pending approval next week by our Board of Trustees.

With the approval of the Faculty Senate, we have nominated Dolly Parton — one of East Tennessee’s most famous daughters — to receive an honorary doctoral degree from UT Knoxville. The degree, a Doctor of Humane and Musical Letters, would be conferred on May 9 at the College of Arts and Sciences commencement in Thompson-Boling Arena.

Her life’s work as an entertainer, philanthropist and cultural ambassador for this state uniquely distinguish her as a person worthy of this honor, and she would be only the second recipient of an honorary doctorate from UT Knoxville.

Ms. Parton’s achievements in entertainment are well-known, and over her career, the Sevier County native has become the most successful female
country music artist in history. Along with great success in several musical genres, she has earned acclaim for her work in television, on
film and on Broadway.

Ms. Parton is dedicated to East Tennessee and consistently sensitive to the needs of its communities, particularly in education at all levels. For more than 30 years, she has provided incentives for graduation and college scholarships for Sevier County students, giving them opportunities beyond high school and a chance for a college education.

Ms. Parton founded the Imagination Library in Sevier County in 1996, providing an age-appropriate book to children every month — from birth to 5 years. The program now serves 1,000 communities in 47 states, the United Kingdom and Canada, distributing more than 5 million books a year.

In addition to her philanthropic work, Ms. Parton has served as a cultural ambassador for this region and this state throughout the world.

Because of her career not just as a musician and entertainer, but also for her role as a cultural ambassador, philanthropist and lifelong advocate for education, it is fitting that she be honored with an honorary degree from the flagship educational institution of her home state. It will be a memorable ceremony for students and faculty alike.

Thank you for all you do to make our campus a place where education remains a central value.

Bright & Early: Badvertising Edition

Good morning, Nashville. As they say, desperate times call for desperate measures. With Metro schools now looking at being about $16 million in the hole, they’re taking a look at some creative ways to bring in the dough–the latest of which is selling advertising space on Metro school buses. It’s already legal to sell black and white bus ads in Tennessee, but they think colored ads would entice more businesses to actually buy them. A lot of folks seem to support at least looking into it, but some parents feel like it would be tacky… though not as tacky, we think, as a $16 million deficit.

Happy Hour: Probably Worth Celebrating

  • Yay for us! Nashville’s crime rate was down for the 5th year straight and is actually at its lowest point in 18 years. Guess we’re doing something right! [WKRN]
  • The latest estimate says we’ll be getting $4.28B from the economic stimulus package, which includes that $600M for highway projects that we talked about a few weeks ago–in addition to $1.6B for TennCare and $1.2B for education (yes please!) [WKRN]
  • Coach Lane Kiffin over at University of Tennessee has been called out a third time for violating the NCAA’s policies about recruits. No fog machines were involved this time, though. :( [Tennessean]
  • So Kroger has a marketplace that sells furniture and bed & bath items? Who knew! The first Kroger Marketplace in Middle Tennessee opened in Thompson Station near Spring Hill on Wednesday morning. [WKRN]
  • Rep. Marsha Blackburn is off the hook for the campaign finance charges that the FEC tried to bring against her. Between that and her fake foreclosure, she’s had a rough time of it this year! [Tennessean]
