You Tell Us: What’s REALLY Tennessee’s Official State Beverage?

So here we are just a few weeks into Tennessee’s legislative session and someone had to go and point out that our great state has no official beverage. And today, Rep. Henry Fincher (D-Cookeville) proposed that we should choose milk.

With the help of some Twitter friends, we’ve learned that if this resolution passes, we will join the ranks of Twenty Other Really Boring States whose official state beverage is milk, and we’re pretty sure that we’re better than that. So, Nashville, you tell us:

What should Tennessee pick as its official state beverage?

  • Please. This is so easy. It must be Jack Daniels...

But wait. I forgot we live in the bible belt and whiskey is the devil's drink. Nevermind.

I'm being serious when the other posts are humorous, but it's high time we got over this addiction to milk. The choice is "milk" but it's assumed to be cow's milk. There are many people who are allergic to cow's milk, or at least suffer gastrointestinal consequences from consuming cow's milk products. Cow's milk gives us calories, fat, and cholesterol. Now if you want to include soy milk, rice milk and almond milk, I would be more interested. Otherwise, I'll vote for Jack. At least Jack Daniel only gets you drunk.

    Sun Drop
  • Didn't that come from Missouri, though? Not sure we can claim that one.
  • Don't get me started on milk. Ew. Yazoo all the way! (Although really, whiskey makes the most sense...)

    water from the tennessee river
    (suck it georgia)
  • I voted other thinking about the polluted water, but now that I think of it milk seems appropriate considering that the overwhelming majority of non-whites are lactose intolerant and Tennessee is known for being intolerant of minorities and immigrants.
  • Jenni
    I'm lactose intolerant.
  • So basically it's also discrimination! Obviously. ;)
  • Brilliant poll, and a worthy question to consider. Hat tip, ladies.
  • Haha, we try. ;)

    1) Tennessee Whiskey - Don't forget George Dickel
    2) Fruit Tea (sweet tea is too ubiquitous) - I don't remember drinking fruit tea outside of TN
  • Mmm, we definitely didn't think of fruit tea!
  • I vote for Yazoo, but I've got to ask the question. Don't our state reps have anything better to do than argue over a state beverage or question Obama's birthplace or any other crazy thing they've done so far?
  • Yeah, I had to wonder the same thing.

As a Marylander, I resent you called us a "boring state" :-P

I had no idea that was our "official beverage" ... Though coming less and less so, I'm sure. I grew up next to a dairy farm, which went out of business a few years ago. :-/
  • Yeah, definitely plenty of dairy farms here too. But they're everywhere!
  • Haha, we're from Virginia!
  • Coal ash slurry.
  • Ha, I actually had a "TVA-tainted creek water" down as an option but figured it would be better as a write-in. ;)
  • That is hilarious.
  • I am a native Tennesseean living in NYC, and I never fail to order a sweet tea while I'm back at home in the state.
  • Yeah... hands down, when it comes to sweet tea, Tennessee does it better.
  • SwiftTheRedFox
I'm in total agreement. Sweet tea is the beverage of the south.
