Bright & Early: Back To Square One

Good morning, Nashville. We hate to keep harping on the Kingston ash spill, but the more we read about it, the more it blows our minds. While testifying before an environmental committee at the state legislature yesterday, TVA prez Tom Kilgore reiterated that the billion-gallon spill covered nearly 300 acres of land and was probably enough to lay 11 tons of ash on each acre. He said that they were doing their best to get it cleaned up, especially from the river, but they can’t seem to cut through all the Federal red tape. He then admitted that the ash that had already moved downriver would probably never be captured. The one bit of silver lining is that our rates supposedly won’t be affected by the $800M+ cleanup effort. But the money has to come from somewhere, right?

  • No Idol for us. The first three American Idol finalists were chosen last night and we’re a little sad to report that neither of the Nashvillians made the cut. Fortunately, there’s still the hope of the wildcard.
  • Auto bailout trouble. Moody’s Investor Service has set the chances of GM and Chrysler filing for bankruptcy at 70% despite the $17.4B in loans they’ve gotten already from the Feds. If they can’t shape up by March 31, the Treasury Department can apparently require that the funds be used to finance the bankruptcy filing. If that happens, job losses could be in the millions.
  • Bits & pieces. TSU and three of its professors are being sued for allegedly discriminating against white students … The Preds lost to the Red Wings 6-2 last night despite the efforts of Sully, who we can all agree we’re happy to have back … President Obama’s plan to reduce foreclosures could bail out a lot of Nashvillians … The beginning of the end for analog television managed to go on without a riot.
