Happy Hour: Yeah, So We Wish We Could Run A Marathon

  • Big changes in store for this year’s Country Music Marathon. Not only are they tweaking your course, jacking up your registration prices, and embarrassing all you half-marathon runners by making you wear bright red shirts, but they’re also changing the t-shirts to synthetic materials instead of cotton. Yikes! (Alright, so it really isn’t that bad and the synthetic shirts are pretty neat.) [Tennessean]
  • Nashville’s foreign-born population has grown by almost 50% from 2000 to 2007 according to a new Census report. Who knew? [Tennessean]
  • On a somewhat related note, the Metro Council meeting last night got about as dramatic as, well, a Metro Council meeting can get courtesy of one Mr. Eric Crafton. [City Paper]
  • UT president John Petersen tendered his resignation today, saying that he’s decided he’s ready to move on. And can you blame him with the whole no-money-for-higher-ed quandary? [WTVF]

The best part of this year's country music will be the 50+ hula hoopers doing the half marathon! Weeeeeee!!

Seriously!? That sounds incredible! I'd totally come out and cheer just so I could see that. Is it Hooperama or something?

Just for the record only newbies wear the shirt during the race.. it's supposed to be a reward for completing the race so it's a cart/horse situation to wear it before you finish. A lot of races don't even give out the shirts until you've finished. Also, the synthetic shirts are FAR better than cotton for running. That's all I wear when I run whether it's a race or just a run after work.

As for the registration prices, they're already outrageous. $100 for the half is crazy (not to mention only a $5 difference between the half and full). That's one reason why I'm running the Tom King half for $45 instead. Although the hula hoopers

I think one of the hopes with the new shirts is that more runners will wear them during the race. It certainly makes more sense than doling out the old cotton t-shirts and expecting people to run a half/full marathon in them, though I'm sure it can be done…

Tom King sounds WAY better price-wise. Smart move!

That's going to crush my self confidence if I get passed by someone hula-hooping right before the finish line :)
