Happy Hour: Well, That’s One Way To Do It

  • A first-year teacher at a Metro elementary school turned himself in after “realizing it was not an appropriate form of discipline” to tape third graders’ mouths shut or tape kids in their seats using packing tape. Uh, yes? [Tennessean]
  • Nothing like a solid workday without power to make you appreciate the convenience of electricity, right? [WTVF]
  • Check out some of the videos and pictures of storm damage (which was pretty bad, but not nearly as bad as Oklahoma) over at NashFlix. [Nashville Is Talking]
  • It was another colorful day in the Tennessee legislature with controversial Speaker Kent Williams being out visiting his sick parents and a temporary replacement being elected in his absence. Coincidentally, Tennessee Republicans had just taken out an ad publicly blasted Williams in his hometown newspaper. [WTVF, Tennessean]
  • House Democratic Caucus leader Rep. Mike Turner was also hospital-bound today with chest pains. [WZTV]
  • Metro General Hospital is cutting jobs and slashing pay to try and cope with the $3.6 million deficit they’re looking at. [WSMV]
  • We should probably consider scaling back our carbon footprints since we’re using more than the rest of the country. [Tennessean]
  • Three cheers for the Franklin folks who get to have liquor stores downtown finally! [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Some Cheese With That Whine Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Things are looking good for the the wine-in-grocery-store bills that are currently making their way through the TN legislature. Representatives of the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission have said that they could definitely handle the oversight and financial burden of adding anywhere from 1,000 to 6,000 new licensed stores, which would force them to add a new supervisor for every 100 stores that decide to sell wine. We say, bring it on! To find out how you can help bring wine to Nashville’s grocery stores, check out Red White and Food.

  • Weather advisory. There’s some seriously nasty weather headed our way this morning. With sustained winds of as much as 25 mph and higher gusts, this line of storms has left a pretty big dent in the Midwest before reaching us. Look for the biggest squall line around noon today.
  • Doobie doobie doo. If you’ve ever wondered what a ton of marijuana looks like (like a ton ton, as in 2,000 pounds), then look no further than the Davidson County drug court. The pot, valued at over $2 million, was carted into the courtroom yesterday as evidence against a man who allegedly had it shipped in from Texas and taken to a warehouse off of Factory Lane near Trevecca.
  • Almost famous. Thanks again to Christian Grantham over at Nashville Is Talking for inviting us onto the Morning Browser to discuss all things Twestival and Nashvillest. In case you missed the interview, you can still see it on Ustream.
  • Bits & pieces. The crappy economy has claimed Goldie’s Deli in Sylvan Park. We’ll miss it! … The Fire Chief is cracking down on night clubs without working fire sprinkler systems … Kenny Chesney really, really wants you to know that he is really, really not gay … Wednesday morning shocker: The Academy of Country Music announced their award nominations this morning and Brad Paisley leads the pack with six.

‘William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet’ To Premiere At Nashville Film Festival

Though we’re not exactly sure what we did to deserve such an honor, we’ll take what we can get: The much-anticipated documentary William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet is set to make its world debut at the Nashville Film Festival in April. The film chronicles the determination of choreographer Margo Sappington to, um, boldly go where no man has gone before and turn Shatner’s album Has Been into a ballet. Naturally, old Captain Kirk himself will be in town for the screening alongside Ben Folds, who co-wrote Has Been.

The disc was recorded in Nashville, and featured songs that [Shatner] co-wrote, with contributions from Henry Rollins, Joe Jackson, Aimee Mann, Brad Paisley and Folds. The finished ballet, Common People, is set to six songs from Has Been and was captured on film when it debuted along with the Milwaukee Ballet in 2007. [via City Paper]

Now because this is the 40th anniversary of the Nashville Film Festival, we hear there are some other special screenings worth seeing, but we can’t really imagine what would top this one. Heck, we just want the chance to see The Shat wandering around Nashville.
