Brrrr: Nashville Rescue Mission Needs Your Help
Hey Nashville, it’s COLD. We know this because kids even weaseled their way out of school because of the cold today. Now think about how cold it would be if you were homeless, and especially if you didn’t have a warm coat, or some gloves and a hat. The Nashville Rescue Mission is especially in need of warm blankets, coats, hats, gloves and socks this weekend as we all struggle to stay warm.
Ugly Mugs in East Nashville has set up space inside as a drop-off location. These donations will be collected and taken to the Rescue Mission both tonight and tomorrow night. Or take your donations directly to their donation center, at 616 7th Avenue South downtown (open between 7am-7pm, Monday-Saturday). Visit their donations page for more information about giving monetarily. Thanks to Christy N. for the tip!

Happy Hour: Building Up The Arsenal
- How could we pass up a headline like this?: “Steelers Unveil Secret Weapon: Martina McBride.” [WTVF]
- We’re happy to say that all 150 people on board the plane that crashed into the Hudson River right after take-off made it out safe and sound. [Tennessean]
- Probably a bad segue on our part, but Southwest is also adding some new flights out of BNA for the next few months! [WSMV]
- Elton John and Billy Joel are playing the Sommet Center on May 16th and for some reason Mayor Dean felt it was necessary to hold a press conference about it? ::shrug:: [Tennessean]
- The GLBT community will be coming out on Saturday to picket outside the Brentwood hotel that’s being accused of firing a man because he was gay. [Out & About]

Metro Kind Of Declares Friday A Snow Day! [School Closures]
This just in from WKRN: Metro Schools will be closed tomorrow because it is going to be so stinking cold. Due to the fact that lots of the kiddos walk rather than taking the bus, The Powers That Be have decided that perhaps that isn’t such a good idea when it’s 5 degrees outside. Snow day for all! Minus the snow!

WKRN Offers Cheapo Eats And Other Sundry Services
A while back, we stumbled across a little-known trick for getting local restaurant (and other services such as tanning or massage) gift certificates on the cheap. No, not Nashville Originals – though we love them, it’s hard to enter the fray at 6:30am four times a year to try to score our favorites. No, the trick this time around was our local Clear Channel affiliate radio stations, The Big 98 WSIX and 107.5 The River.
And there’s more where that came from.
Our local ABC affiliate, WKRN, has a special Half-Off Nashville Thursday site, with deals stacked so high we can barely contain our excitement (and our credit cards) while browsing. And lo and behold, it’s Thursday! So without further ado, pull out your wallets and spend us right out of this recession, okay? Okay. We knew we could count on you. WKRN’s Half-Off Nashville Thursday deals go on sale every Thursday at 8:30am, and there are limited quantities of all gift certificates.

Bright & Early: Pink Slip Thursday Edition
Good morning, Nashville. This is how we hate to start the morning, but layoff news just keeps rolling in. This time, we’ve come full circle to another round of state job cuts. You might remember the first round of buyouts and layoffs back in June where about 2,300 state employees lost their jobs, and this time we’re looking at another 2,000. Governor Bredesen has vowed to do what he can to minimize the damage, but he also tells us that the state is in its worst financial crisis since World War II. He’s looking at options like four-day work weeks and that whole forced-vacation thing that Gannett is doing, but it doesn’t look real promising.
- Not exactly transparent. Eric Crafton and the English First group that’s backing him probably won’t be disclosing financial records as is required by the Election Commission before an election. Apparently they’ve been calling around Davidson County trying to find out what would happen if they miss today’s deadline. Many folks suspect it’s because of the group’s probable financial ties to known racist groups.
- Down and out. As the temperatures dip down to 5 degrees tonight, be sure to think of the folks in Middle Tennessee who don’t have heat. And there are plenty of them.
- Bits & pieces. A new phone poll of WSMV shows the English Only election to be neck-in-neck … You want whiter teeth? Not here … Congrats to Vandy, who picked up another SEC win … Nissan is moving toward a four-day work week.

Our Favorite Country Musician Remixes Our Other Favorite Country Musician [Snoop Dogg]
Remember back in July when we told you that Snoop Dogg was going to be remixing Johnny Cash’s “Walk The Line” for a Johnny Cash Remixed project? Well, the day has arrived. Sort of. The album comes out January 27, but thanks to a stroke of good luck, we can actually listen to good ol’ Snoop’s track in its entirety RIGHT NOW. Thanks to the Nashville Cream for digging it up, it totally made our day.

The Green Wagon: Nashville’s First “Green” General Store
Entrepreneur Jennifer Casale is opening what she calls “Nashville’s first green general store” this Friday in Sylvan Park, and we’re loving the idea. We love the idea of a neighborhood general store, and we love it even more for being sustainable and environmentally friendly. And Jen herself is the real deal – She even drives a station wagon that runs on the waste vegetable oil from local restaurants.
The Green Wagon will house a classic collection of general store merchandise, with everything from cleaning supplies to clothing to shampoo to crib mattresses. The store will feature a “refilling station” where customers can refill their bottles with certain products at a discounted price, instead of buying new containers. A large portion of the products in The Green Wagon inventory are made locally, therefore reducing the business’ and customers’ carbon footprint that would normally occur during the shipping process. Since the notion of “green” is relatively new and somewhat undefined, Jen uses a standardized assessment that will evaluate products based on their environmental footprint across the product’s lifecycle stages. This standard purchasing process will give The Green Wagon customers peace of mind and allow them the freedom to walk in and feel confident about any item they purchase. The Green Wagon hopes that defining its standards of “green” will simplify and enhance the shopping experience for customers.
The Green Wagon is located at 4429 Murphy Road and opens this Friday. It will be open from 10am-7pm every day. While you’re down there, stop at the Produce Place and grab some local produce. We’re definitely jealous of Sylvan Park right now.

Bright & Early: Let Them Eat Cake Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Things look pretty grim for Metro Nashville Public Schools this morning since the state has published a new report taking them to task for failing yet again to follow orders that were intended to bring them up to federal standards. Problem is, they seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. While they’re supposed to be hiring 41 new people to fulfill requirements for adminstration, ESL, and special education, constant budget cuts have forced them into a hiring freeze. Just this month they’ve been asked to cut an additional $4M with more cuts expected in February. All we can say is that newly-hired director Jesse Register sure has his work cut out for him.
- Killing us softly. Seems like everyone has a bone to pick with the TVA these days. As the result of a lawsuit filed by the State of North Carolina, they now have to put special pollution controls on the four coal-burning plants closest to the border because of sulfur dioxide and other nasty stuff that floats into our neighboring state. And we wonder why Nashville gets smoggy in the summer.
- The old-fashioned way. About 250 students showed up for the protest outside the Capitol yesterday regarding college tuition hikes intended to save the state some money. A few of them succeeded in getting a meeting with the Governor, which we can imagine is no small feat on the first day of the General Assembly.
- Bits & pieces. We’re pretty much going to be freezing our butts off from now until Saturday afternoon, but we’re sad because there’s no snow in the forecast … UT students aren’t exactly happy with their imminent tuition hikes … Dell-haters were vindicated yesterday when Dell had to settle with Tennessee and 45 other states for providing crappy products and customer service … Volkswagen promises they’re not going anywhere but the ‘Noog.
