Happy Hour: Yes He Did

Bright & Early: This Day In History Edition
Good morning, Nashville. So today’s the day, huh? We’re having a tough time tearing ourselves away from the inauguration coverage long enough to peruse the local headlines, so we’re going to keep it short this morning. Happy Inauguration Day!
- MLK day. Hundreds of Nashvillians turned out for the MLK march down Jefferson Street yesterday, which for some, led up to the day of community service called for by the incoming Prez.
- Yikes. The word on the street is that, yes, Tim McGraw is totally planning on running for governor on the Democratic ticket. We don’t really know whether to laugh or cry.
- Bits & pieces. People are predicting we’re going to lose 15K jobs in Tennessee next year, bringing our unemployment rate to a cool 7.4% … One of the Tennessean woman who was on the plane that crashed last week gives her harrowing first-hand account … What is this about the Preds being booed off the ice after sucking it up against the Thrashers this weekend?

Collect Those Free Cosmetics, Nashville [Freebies]
Given the big events of today, a trip to the mall may be the last thing on your mind. So we’ll make this short and sweet – Basically, a bunch of department stores are settling a class-action lawsuit today by giving away 175 million dollars in free cosmetic products. You’re a member of the class if you’ve purchased a product from a very long list of cosmetic products between 1994 and 2003. As with all class-action lawsuits, you’re entitled to your (tiny) piece of the settlement. Collect by showing up at one of the qualifying stores (Macy’s and Dillards, in the Nashville area) and head to the cosmetics department, where you will grab a product valued at $25 for free. You may be asked to sign a form stating that you purchased a covered product between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003. And that’s it! It’s really that simple. [Consumerist, CosmeticsSettlement.com]

Where To Watch The Inauguration In Nashville
Most of us will be chained to our desks at work or in school today during the inaugural festivities, but for those lucky enough to be free this morning, you have a couple options that don’t involve sitting on your couch with a remote.
- Front Row Seat For History, The Belcourt, 9am-12pm: Join Nashville For All Of Us to watch the inauguration on the big screen. The event is free and open to the public, but new & gently used children’s book donations are being accepted for Book ‘Em & the Pencil Foundation.
- The Arts Company’s Inauguration Party, The Arts Company, 11am-2pm: Watch live coverage of the inauguration and browse political artwork done by four artists.
- At School: Most of the area colleges and universities are hosting big-screen viewings of inauguration coverage. This Tennessean article lists viewings for Belmont, Vandy and Fisk.
- At Home: Okay, okay, so you can still watch the inauguration live without “sitting on your couch with a remote” …technically. If for whatever reason you can’t be by your television (say, if you can spare a few seconds at work or something), online video sites Hulu and Joost are streaming live coverage all day.

Inauguration Day Means… Free Doughnuts? [Freebies]
Krispy Kreme is giving away a free doughnut today to celebrate Inauguration Day. Despite the fact that you can usually walk into Krispy Kreme and get a free glazed doughnut pretty much any day, you can get the sprinkly kind today if you want. Upgrade! We’ll probably grab a whole wheat glazed doughnut or something. J/K!!!1 Bring on that starch.

- Either the TVA shut down their main email account due to the influx of nasty letters or the nasty letters shut it down for them. Either way? Tennesseans – 1, TVA – 0.[Tennessean]
- Gallatin High School thinks that jousting on bicycles on the school’s track is probably not a good idea. We would tend to agree. [WSMV]
- Apparently there were some fake $100 bills floating around at that fateful Titans game last week. But fear not, you can tell them from the fakes by using some magical marker or something. Says Channel 4. [WSMV]
- Someone lit the Cool Springs Galleria on fire today. Fortunately no one was hurt, but whoever-it-was did rack up about $10,000 worth of damage. If anyone knows anything about this, the Franklin Fire Department would love to talk to you! [Tennessean]
- Two lucky kiddos from Christ The King get to go to the inauguration next week and they’re WAY excited. [WTVF]

What Exactly Is “Indie Nashville,” CNN?
CNN Money has just graced us with an interesting piece entitled “Indie Nashville,” wherein they tout the virtues of our wonderful city/America’s country music capitol/American’s big-city-small-town/yada yada yada. It appears to be The-Tourist-Who-Doesn’t-Want-To-Be-All-Touristy’s Guide to Nashville. Or at least, that’s what we think they’re trying to do. Let’s start at the beginning.
The capital of country music is a city that still feels like a small town, combining old-fashioned Southern hospitality with a vibrant music and arts scene.
Well, that’s fair enough. There are also 8 additional nods that CNN Money gives us. Let’s review them all.
- Where music stars get their start: CNN’s recommendation is to stay out of “tourist places” like B.B. Kings and hit up the local favorites, like The Bluebird Cafe, Tootsies, and of course, OUR favorite place to hang out on Friday night, the Wildhorse Saloon. But better yet! Hang out on the street, where “you can watch the street musicians, often top session players…”
- Musical landmarks: Their one suggestion here is a NashTrash tour. We’re sure that’s fun and all, but can’t actually claim to have been on one. We particularly enjoy this photo (which we’ve kindly swiped and hosted on our own server for your continued viewing pleasure) that they use to illustrate what fun you can have when you do “indie” and “underground” things in Nashville!
- Opryland’s tropical escape: Oh, wait, they’ve changed their minds. Skip the NashTrash tour and just go straight to the Grand Ole Opry and Opryland Hotel!
- Sleep where the trains used to: Union Station Hotel is the place to stay if you’re visiting “Indie Nashville,” but that’s totally irrelevant since the economy sucks and no one can afford to stay there anyway.
- Get your grit on: CNN’s recommendation is practically a firm command that no trip to Nashville (er, sorry, INDIE Nashville) is complete until you eat at Cock of the Walk. This may very well be true.
- Where the locals go: All the locals eat at Rotiers and Cafe Coco (the hippest INDIE NASHVILLE joint EVAR!) and you should too. Also, we’re now aware that the block of Elliston that houses the Exit/In is apparently known as “Rock Block.” Who knew.
- A sweet treat: Eat biscuits at Loveless Cafe, or if you’re too poor to afford the Union Station Hotel and had to grab a crappy economy room out in Donelson, Ellensdales is okay. Then, drive your rental car alllll the way to East Nashville to pick up dessert at Sweet 16th Bakery, but we hope you purchased rental insurance with that! The 37206 is so INDIE NASHVILLE that it’s scary, wink wink.
- Antebellum history: Visit The Hermitage on your trip to INDIE NASHVILLE, because it’s so far out of the way that no other tourists want to bother. Oh, and if you’re from out of state, you can forget about those half price tickets – only the locals get those! Because we go there so often.
So there you have it, Nashvillest’s translation of CNN Money’s “Indie Nashville.” We hope you enjoyed it, and more importantly, we hope you know that we’re really NOT scared of East Nashville at all. Thanks to Jim Reams for the link.

(For Real This Time) Bye Bye, Circuit City [Comings & Goings]
We lost a couple of our local Circuit City stores at the end of last year, but it looks like the rest of them will be following. Reports are pouring in from pretty much everywhere that state that Circuit City has filed for court approval to liquidate its remaining 567 stores. That means we can wave goodbye to our remaining three stores in Bellevue, Cool Springs and Madison.
Liquidation sales are scheduled to begin Saturday, but watch out! Last time they liquidated, some shoppers noticed a little bait & switch going on with the prices. Liquidators have been known to go so far as to double the original price on some items before they slap a 30% discount on it. Let the buyer beware!
If we have to be honest, we really aren’t going to miss Circuit City one bit. The selection and service have left quite a bit to be desired for several years now. But this is putting a lot of folks out of a job at a time when a job is what they need the most, and for that, we’re very disappointed.

Speaking Of Cold: Leipers Fork Ladies Donate 1000 Caps For Babies
The ladies of Grace Chapel Church in Leipers Fork have been busy. Collectively, they knit over 500 caps for newborn babies as part of Save The Children’s Knit One, Save One campaign, and donated an additional 500 machine-made caps as well. Senator Frist even showed up at their church to recognize their dedication to the project.
Save The Children’s Knit One, Save One campaign urges those of us privileged enough to have warm clothes and a roof over our head to share a little, by knitting or crocheting simple, tiny hats that could save the life of a newborn baby in a developing country. This year’s deadline for sending a hat has been extended to January 31, so there’s still time to dust off those knitting needles and get to work! Most of the caps should take even a beginner knitter less than a couple of hours. Participation information & Action Kit here.
So if you’re cold in Nashville today, consider warming up your hands and whipping up a cap for Knit One, Save One. And if you can’t knit, well, that’s okay too – a storebought cap is just fine.

Bright & Early: Money On The Mind Edition
Good morning, Nashville. It’s official: English First, the group behind the charter amendment that’s costing us 350,000 to put on a special ballot next week, has missed the deadline for disclosing their financial records. This means that we won’t know how much money they’ve raised or who it’s coming from until probably after the election next Thursday. Financial records for Nashville For All Of Us, on the other hand, show that the group has raised close to $300,000 from hundreds of donors including big names like Vanderbilt University, Gaylord Entertainment, Mike Curb of Curb Records, and the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau. In related news, the NPT debate is still on for tonight at 7pm most likely without Eric Crafton.
- More budget cuts for Metro. All departments of the Metro Government are looking at 10 percent cuts over the next couple of months. The priority is still on education (not that you’d know it by looking at how many kids are in school today!), but cuts are expected to happen all across the board.
- Sending out an SOS. NES is trying to get a little bit more creative in working with folks who can’t pay their electricity bills this month. Earlier this week they explained to Metro Council why bills were so high this month, one of the major reasons being the TVA who keeps raising rates and spilling toxic sludge that costs a lot of money to clean up.
- Bits & pieces. One of the people on the US Air flight that crashed into the Hudson yesterday was from East Tennessee … The Homelessness Commission wants Tent City shut down by July 1st … Unlike the rest of the country, property values in Davidson County actually went up last year.
