Happy Hour: Milk And Bread
- Icy icy doom might be in the cards for us tonight, or at least we can hope. Uncharacteristically, schools across the midstate aren’t canceling anything until they know what the forecast says. Sorry, kids. [Tennessean]
- Remember that $6,000 painting from this morning that someone donated to Goodwill? It finally went to the highest bidder the tune of $8,000. [WSMV]
- Word on the street is that Councilman Eric Crafton might be collaborating with the very folks who fiercely opposed his English Only amendment to create a program that would allow businesses to donate money for hiring more ESL teachers at the Cohn Adult Learning Center–proving that hell might have, in fact, frozen over. [Post Politics]
- The TVA blames it all on the Federal Government. [Pith In The Wind]
- Caterpillar, Inc. is cutting 20,000 jobs over the next few months. Since their financial HQ sits right here in Nashville, we can’t imagine that’s good news for us. [WKRN]

Recession Blues: We’re Losing Our Home Depot Expo, Too [Comings & Goings]

The pain of loss is getting to be too much to bear – Our 100 Oaks Home Depot Expo is closing, as one of 34 (read: the entire Expo division) Home Depot Expo stores being axed nationwide. The cuts are part of 7,000 overall Home Depot layoffs and our eyes are bleeding just looking at those numbers. It will close in the next two months. [Via Post Business]

Nashville Now “Fit” And “Cool” [Mixed Reviews By People Who Don't Live Here]

In the past year, Tennessee has been named CalorieLab’s 6th Fattest State, and The Center For Disease Control And Prevention’s 3rd Fattest State. So you can imagine our surprise when we read that Men’s Fitness has included Nashville on their list of fittest (not fattest!) cities, coming in at 24th place. We’re not really sure how they’re calculating their scores, but we had a little giggle over it. Not too shabby for a city that is barely walkable. Our neighbors in Memphis made Men’s Fitness’ “Fattest Cities” list, so we guess that means that between the two of us, we balance the state out. Thanks to Twitter user @jakegreene for the tip.
But not only are we fit, we’re also “cool,” as far as MSN’s 15 Coolest North American Cities go, anyway. Another noteworthy thing about this list is that Savannah, Georgia came in 6th and New York City was 7th. Anyway, thave this to say about Nashville (13th Coolest City, represent!):
Nashville, Tenn., is the heart and soul of country music in America. A newly revitalized downtown district, however, features several clubs that showcase emerging and established rock and blues acts.

Chipotle To Enter Nashville Market Soon (We Hope)
Because Baja/Blue Coast Burrito, Moe’s, Chile Burrito and Qdoba aren’t enough, we’ve been desperately begging Chipotle to bring their burrito-y goodness to Nashville… And it looks like we’re about to see the fruits of our begging! From the Bring Chipotle To Nashville Group:

And Chipotle lovers everywhere rejoice. We’ll let you know when we get the official confirmation and details, so everyone cross your fingers!

Bright & Early: Kids These Days Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Change is coming to the downtown branch of the Nashville Public Library in February. For some reason they’ve decided that opening a “Teen Wing” with a Wii and four giant plasma TVs in the middle of a library is a good idea. They say they’re doing it to encourage teens to start using the library (but seriously, haven’t these people ever heard of the internet!?) and it’ll be closed in with four walls to contain all the noise. Not to be raining on anyone’s parade or anything, but we sort of have to wonder how many Voluntary Metro Employee Furloughs it’s going to take to fund this thing. Just sayin’.
- Bob that what? We never thought we’d see the day with Jessica Simpson would be opening for a Rascal Flatts tour, but that day has arrived. The Bob That Head tour includes 20 cities and kicked off on Thursday.
- Mumpower fail. Somehow, a copy of state Rep. Jason Mumpower’s victory speech for the Speaker Of The House gig he didn’t ever get is floating around on the internet, making the entire situation even more super-messed-up-but-pretty-funny than it already is.
- Bits & pieces. Someone accidentally (we think) donated a $6000 painting to Goodwill, which they’re now auctioning off on Ebay … Pro-life advocates gathered at the Bicentennial Mall over the weekend to rally support for the removal of protection for abortions under the Tennessee state law … Electric cars have hit Middle Tennessee … The TVA is stepping up the pace of the ash cleanup in Kingston.

Happy Hour: The Silver Lining
- Were you one of the lucky folks whose vital information happened to be on the laptops stolen back in December 2007 from the Davidson County Election Commission? You may be happy to know that the guys who stole the laptops pleaded guilty today. [WSMV]
- The City of Franklin might be booing Noshville’s mascot Mr. Pickle off the street after the Mayor pointed out that advertisements like this might be illegal. [WKRN]
- Kids in Williamson County may soon be deprived from that essential part of the human experience known as Fried Cafeteria Food. This, um, is still the South… right? [WKRN]
- The first draft of the TVA’s first press release about the Kingston ash spill had all sorts of warnings of doom and destruction that mysteriously didn’t end up in the one that actually made it to the public. Surprise! [Pith In The Wind]
- Dottie Rambo’s daughter is suing the bus driver who accidentally killed her mother for $25K in damages. Rambo was killed in a crash on May 11th. [WSMV]

We Be Wired [Mixed Reviews From People Who Don't Live Here]

We know we just overloaded you with Mixed Reviews yesterday, but we missed an important one: Nashville is Forbes’ 22nd Most Wired City. We were 25th last year, so cheers for progression! We’re the only Tennessee city on the list, and we beat out Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Honolulu, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Columbus and Austin. The rank is broken down into three smaller categories: Broadband Adoption (we ranked #24), Access Options (#8) and Wi-fi Hotspots (#22). Um, we <3 teh internets!!1

This Just In: Lisa Hannigan At The Belcourt On March 11

You’ve probably heard Lisa Hannigan, even if you don’t recognize her name. Fans of Damien Rice will probably recognize her as the female vocal on most of his music from 2001-2007, or those who saw Jason Mraz live in 2008 might remember her from the show. And even if none of that rings a bell, she’s collaborated with a ton of people – from Herbie Hancock to The Frames to Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol. Despite contributing to a bunch of great artists’ music, we hadn’t heard much solo stuff from Lisa until late last year, when she released her debut album, Sea Sew. Sea Sew is only available overseas and at digital retailers, but will see a U.S. release on February 3rd.
Lisa is hitting Nashville on March 11 at the Belcourt, toward the end of her first headlining U.S. tour. Tickets are $16.50, and we’re way more excited than we should be. You can bet on it – Next time she plays in Nashville, it won’t be so cheap.
Download Lisa Hannigan’s first single from Sea Sew, “I Don’t Know,” for FREE on Amazon MP3.

Bright & Early: No Mas Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We probably don’t have to tell you how things turned out last night, but Nashville spoke up and voted down both initiatives, and we’re guessing (/hoping) that we don’t have to hear anything from Mr. Crafton for a while… or at least anything expensive. You can read about the results on over at the Tennessean, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, BBC, the New York Times, and a breakdown of results over at Post Politics.
- Busy beavers. Radnor Lake has a bit of a beaver problem. Trees seem to be dropping all over place because the little buggers keep, you know, doing what it is that beavers do. To sum it all up, WSMV says, “Hikers that Channel 4 News spoke to aren’t sure how to feel.”
- The saga continues. One of the TVA’s contractors just had to shell out $6.2M to the federal government to settle a suit against them for cooking the books to get more money for safety equipment.
- Bits & pieces. The Vine Hill Boys & Girls Club is closing next month due to the organization trying to cut costs … Metro busted a guy for growing 87 marijuana plants and baking some “special” cookies near a public park … In case you missed it yesterday, our unemployment rate was almost 8% in December … Our friends over at Chattarati are doing some seriously cool Google mashup’ing with campaign donations and we’re pretty jealous.
