The current economic situation is at the tip of everyone’s tongues lately, and with good reason. We’re sorting through reports of more and more layoffs every day, many of them hitting pretty close to home. It seems like every day we hear more and more dismal statistics, including last week’s news that employers cut more jobs in November than in the past 34 years.
We don’t mean to depress you, but here’s a roundup of many of the larger local layoffs that have happened in the past few weeks. We’re keeping all of the affected families in our thoughts, and wishing them the best in the weeks to come.
- Big Idea Inc. (Franklin, TN) downsizing. [Post Business]
- Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp. (Franklin, TN) laid off 338 employees and contract workers. [Nashville Business Journal]
- HCA Inc. (Nashville, TN) corporate headquarters planning large scale staff cuts. [Nashville Business Journal]
- The Tennessean (Nashville, TN) cut 92 positions as part of over 1,400 nationwide Gannett layoffs. [Nashville Post]
- Thomas Nelson Inc. (Nashville, TN) laid off 54 employees, which was about 10% of their workforce. [Nashville Business Journal]
- Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire Inc. (LaVergne, TN) announced 158 positions to be cut, after cutting work days earlier this year. Then they announced an additional 7 more job cuts and then asked some more people to move to Iowa. Oh, and they might cut 350 jobs at the end of the year, too. [Tennessean]
