Happy Hour: She Said Yes!

  • Your dose of Cute for the day: ‘Noogan native Donnie Keele proposed to his girlfriend today from an overpass on I-75. He originally called her up and told her his car had broken down, was a real jerk about asking her to pick him up, and then called a bunch of friends and family to roll the banner down to meet her when she drove up. Best wishes, Donnie and Heather! [Tennessean]
  • Unfortunately, the news only goes downhill from there. Starting with the continued deterioration of That Skyscraper That Was Supposed To Be Taller Than Atlanta’s. Originally slated for 70 floors and 600 condos, we’re now down to maybe 100 condos, which will make it even shorter than the Batman Building. [WKRN]
  • Also, the Tennessean laying off 90 more people, including 22 in the newsroom. [WSMV]
  • And somehow MTSU had its third robbery and attempted shooting in the past month, continuing their streak of awesome. What gives? [WSMV]
  • At least we got a new federal grant for suicide prevention! [WTVF]

Bonnaroo 2009 Tickets On Sale Tomorrow!

We can’t even believe it’s that time of year again! Bonnaroo–that outrageous music festival in Manchester, TN that we still sort of claim as our own–will be putting a limited number of presale tickets online tomorrow. The price tag this year is $209.50 with VIP couples tickets going for $1349.50 (and yes, they’re offering a payment plan!). The presale only runs through December 31st or until the tickets run out, but here’s the catch: We still don’t know who’s playing. If you’re willing to take your chances, head over to Bonnaroo.com and pick them up tomorrow.

Bright & Early: Save Our Schools Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’ve been seeing the story pop up here and there for a while, but looks like Mayor Dean actually is bracing himself to take over Metro Nashville Public Schools, which the state may very well ask him to do if the schools don’t meet federal benchmarks. Yesterday, he took off to New York to get a little advice from Mayor Bloomberg since the mayor’s office has been running NYC’s public schools since 2002. Meanwhile, Mayor Dean continues to foot the bill for the superintendant search committee in the event that he gets to pass the buck to someone else; it’s been narrowed down to three applications.

  • Creative solutions. Over a thousand homeless folks trekked down to the Municipal Auditorium yesterday to connect with more than 40 service providers as a part of Nashville’s first Project Homeless Connect. Metro Homelessness Commission put together the event, which was one of about 200 to happen this week all around the country.
  • BREAKING: College is expensive. Unsurprisingly, Tennessee was one of the 49 states to get an F in college affordability. The only state that didn’t fail was California, who got a C. In other news, Tennessee college students could be looking at a 6% tuition hike next year…
  • Bits & pieces. We’re totally bummed that we missed Amy Grant at Lipscomb’s Lighting of the Green ceremony yesterday! … UT’s new coach is looking to recruit some in-state talent from Hillsboro High School … Metro Council is kicking around some new ideas to boost the city’s economic development … From the Department of Sad Layoffs, publisher Thomas Nelson is prepping to cut 55 jobs … Nashville’s first openly gay councilman Keith Durbin is stepping down to run Metro’s IT department.
