Bright & Early: In Good Hands Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It was an exciting weekend between the Titans winning again and the Radio City Rockettes hanging out at Cool Springs Galleria (we missed it!). Mayor Karl Dean may be the latest in line to inherit the failing Metro Schools if test scores aren’t up to par by the end of the school year. We’re not sure how that’s supposed to be more threatening than the state takeover that already happened, but we suppose that’s why no one’s putting us in charge. He’s already picked up two education advisers to guide him through the process should the entire school system end up in his lap. Nashvillest wishes you good luck with that, Mayor Dean.

  • TVA shenanigans. The TVA is trying to show us the silver lining of a 20% rate hike by telling us that because we’re paying more, they’re paying out more to the state and local governments. We’re still kind of curious about how CEO’s 20% salary increase fits into that equation.
  • New kid on the block. Middle Tennessee has a new neighbor–Ned the 21-year old elephant moved into the Hohenwald elephant sanctuary yesterday after being confiscated from a circus trainer in Florida who wasn’t treating the animal right. He’ll be hanging out here until he’s well enough to be placed in a more permanent home.
  • Bits & pieces. Opponents of the English Only ordinance have formed the group “Nashville For All Of Us” to work on killing it in the next few months … Speaking of that, the city’s only bilingual immersion school is getting a few more slots next year … Someone found a body in the Cumberland that police suspect may the bridge jumper from last weekend … Someone in Clarksville found enough sand to build an Obama sand sculpture along the highway.
