Refresher Course In Nashville Voting [Electoral Dysfunction]

We at Nashvillest wanted to send you off to the polls with some helpful hints to make your Election Day go as smoothly as possible. Unfortunately, we can’t really help you out with the lines.

  • Find out where you vote. Davidson County makes it really simple: Just type in your house number and street name, select your zip code, and it’ll spit out your polling place. And all of your district numbers, which will be helpful for the next step. Also available for Williamson and Rutherford counties. Polls will be open from 7am to 7pm.
  • Get to know your candidates. Project Vote Smart is a great place to start. You can look up individual candidates or just enter your zip code and can sift through a list of races by district. Click on a candidate to get a pretty comprehensive bio including voting records, experience, education, and organizations.
  • Hey, we’ve got new machines! Know how to use them. We were pretty sure they were idiot-proof, but apparently some folks have been having trouble. Luckily, there’s PDF instruction sheet to look over before you go, or even a video demonstration if you don’t do the reading thing. Lord knows we don’t want to end up as the Miami-Dade of 2008.
  • Know your rights. In Tennessee, our employers are required to give us paid time off to vote if we’re working while the polls are open. Bad news is, they only have to do it if you had already let them know by noon today. If you didn’t, be sure to plan ahead, allow yourself a lot of extra time, and hope your boss is lenient. Speaking of rights, remember to leave your Obama thong at home.
