Good morning, Nashville. Mayor Dean came out of hiding yesterday to announce a brand spankin’ new committee on making Nashville more walkable and bikeable. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee will be working closely with Metro Public Works to (hopefully) get us the sidewalks and bike lanes we need. “It is my goal that at the end of my term as mayor,” says the Mayor, “Nashville will have been transformed into one of the great walkable and bikeable cities in our country.” We’ll believe it when we see it.
- New Habitat moves forward. At least part of the mammoth Habitat neighborhood in northeast Nashville was approved by the Planning Commission last night much to the chagrin of the neighbors, but still has to go through the Metro Council before the group can break ground.
- Step aside. MTA is finally taking over the ailing Music City Star commuter train and its $1.7 million deficit. They’re actually taking over the entire RTA for the next three years, which means they’ll not only be in charge of the Star, but also the vanpools and new express buses. Service shouldn’t really change.
- Bits & pieces. And now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the new bus station is making its grand debut on Sunday … Sullivan County voters were given the wrong ballots for early voting, which makes us look not so bad with our shady machines … The IRS owes us $5 million in stimulus and refund checks that you guys haven’t claimed yet … Public Storage on Lafayette and Ash downtown caught on fire last night.
