Bright & Early: Too Cool For School Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It sounds like our schools have a real truancy problem, and Police Chief Ronal Serpas is telling the Metro school board, “No more.” Serpas addressed the school board yesterday and blamed teachers and administrators for the problem, accusing them of slacking on taking roll and not doing anything about students who are skipping class. Kids skip school, commit lots of crime, and that becomes a safety issue for both the kids and the city as a whole, he says. This seems to be just one of the many problems brewing with Metro Schools lately.

  • Counting calories. We already know that we’re fat, and Metro is trying to help us shed some pounds by possibly requiring all restaurants to post calorie information on their menus. They’ll be holding a public hearing on November 6th to see how the idea goes over, but if approved, we’d be the first city in the South to do it.
  • Foreclosure. LaVergne neighborhood Lake Forest Estates currently holds the title for Most Foreclosed Homes In The State. In terms of counties, Shelby has the highest foreclosure rate with Davidson rolling in at a close second.
  • Bits & pieces. The MTSU freshman responsible for the terrorism scare last week is set to be mentally evaluated … If you haven’t already filed your 2007 tax return (slackers!), you’ll lose your stimulus check if you don’t file by Wednesday … Former Pred Stu “The Grim Reaper” Grimson has joined a local law firm … Public safety departments are feeling the squeeze of tightening budgets.

I have lots to say about this (esp. Serpas passing the buck) as a teacher in MNPS, but I'm just going to roll my eyes and move on.
  • Ha, yes. I'd love to hear the other side of it.
  • Congrats on the title of Best Local Blog!
  • Thanks a bunch!
