Bright & Early: Squirreling Around Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re preparing ourselves for an invasion this morning. Back in the day, all we had to worry about were armadillos and presidential candidates, but now the squirrels of Middle Tennessee have declared an all-out war. WSMV cleverly reports that animal controllers have been “going nuts” trying to contain the problem, saying that the entire families of squirrels are finding ways into people’s homes and wreaking all sorts of havoc.

  • Dept. of costly mistakes. After shelling out $1M in damages to rehab center Teen Challenge for zoning them off their land a few months ago, Metro is getting slapped with yet another lawsuit from the US Department of Justice over the mess.
  • Securing the Bicentennial Mall. Police are finally installing emergency call boxes at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park after a woman was raped there last September. The boxes aren’t quite up and running yet, but they’re the first of their kind in a Tennessee state park.
  • Bits & pieces. One person was killed when a shooter opened fire in a Knoxville shopping mall yesterday … A toddler who went missing in Georgia was found safe and sound in Nashville early this morning … Thanks to the rising fuel costs and the TVA’s recent rate hike, Murfreesboro has frozen all city spending, including the police department … Now-infamous Palin hacker David Kernell pled not guilty yesterday to illegally accessing Palin’s email account.
