Bright & Early: Did You Hear Belmont’s Hosting A Debate Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re 19 days (and 11 hours and 27 minutes according to the website…) out from the Belmont debate, and this week seems to be the start of that crucial period of time where we probably won’t stop hearing about it in the news. Don’t get us wrong–we’re totally proud of our alma mater, but we’re ready to get this thing underway. This morning brings us the news that there might not be any protesters (ha, ha, ha) and that a lot of people are shelling out a lot of money to get their name on the program. Bear with us over the next few weeks as we slowly go insane.

  • Freedom riders awarded degrees. TSU is finally awarding honorary doctorates to 14 former students who ditched school to join the Freedom Rides in 1961. It’s been an uphill battle getting it approved by the Tennessee Board of Regents, but it’s happening today.
  • Prostitution busts. Apparently 5th Avenue South is quite the gathering spot for male prostitutes. We had no idea. Metro Police are doing their best to arrest the ones they see, but it’s only a misdemeanor, which means they’re likely to end up right back where they started.
  • Bits & pieces. Vanderbilt University Medical Center signed a contract saying they’d be the main health provider for the Preds, taking over where the Saint Thomas left off … A Metro school bus drops a 5-year old girl off more than a mile from her house by accident … Even AAA wants to know why our gas is so dang expensive … The TVA wants to put themselves way, way, way into debt by building some more nuclear facilities.

  • St. Thomas wasn't the Preds healthcare provider for the last 10 years - it was Baptist.
  • Saint Thomas Health Services has been the official healthcare sponsor of the Predators for the last 10 years through their Baptist Sports Medicine brand.

  • wow. We're gonna split hairs here....

    Ok, so we're both right...
Baptist Hospital has been the official provider for the last 10 years (since the team started).

Baptist and St Thomas merged (kinda - they still operate almost totally independent) in 2001 (http://nashville.bizjournals.com/nashville/stor...) so technically St Thomas has been the official provider for 7 years.

Ask any Preds fan or person on the street and they'd say that Baptist was the provider and most have no idea that St Thomas and Baptist share a pocket book (and little else).

    Much ado about nothing...
