Bright & Early: Tennessee Volunteers Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Gustav made landfall yesterday and it looks like the levees held up for the most part this time. There’s still plenty of help needed along the Gulf Coast and right here in Nashville. Evacuees were being bused into Middle Tennessee all weekend but a lot of their luggage is still MIA, leaving many of them without changes of clothes and prescription medications. Some churches are stepping in to provide transportation to and from the store, but they could still use some help.

  • You go girl. Our hats are off to Janet M. Holder, who was sworn in yesterday as the first female Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court. She’s one of only about 20 women to hold that position in state supreme courts across the country.
  • Wise choices. The Metro Council decided it could spare an extra $1M for MTA to make sure bus fares don’t have to go up again in the near future. They’ve also finally decided that now might be a good time to start looking at other public transit options.
  • Bits & pieces. The Tennessee Guard are some of the first to the Gulf Coast to help with the cleanup … Speaking of Gustav, we’re probably not going to get any rain out of this one … Hospitals around Nashville are working on shortening the wait time in emergency rooms.
